I've done that before. My installation was fine until I tried to install sound drivers for VPC's emulated Soundblaster. Would work fine in DOS but give me a divide-by-zero error upon startup of Win3.11. This always would crash the latter!
@lollo6987 The password prompt at the beginning is from the Microsoft network client. It's not an actual password for Windows itself, just a network password. If you just press ESC at the password prompt it'll still let you in even if you set a password.
That was awesome, but it was too quick, please create a guide or something. Also the sound, how can I play Prince of Persia 1 on 3.11?
I remember that I used to install DOS first, then Windows 3.11, and then I installed Prince of Persia and played it from there. How can I do this on Virtual PC?
"All in under 10 minutes real time (shown at 4x speed)."
And here I was thinking you were just being a dick for going so fast. I actually thought you were trying to teach something, not just show how fast you can click a mouse after doing the same shit about 100 times.
You need to use the virtual machine additions for DOS that were included with Virtual PC 2004. Download VPC2004 somewhere and extract the virtual floppy disk image for the additions from there.
Note that I haven't been successful at all in installing Windows 3.11 on the new Virtual PC for Windows 7.
Just a reminder. If you are planning to install any legacy OSes which were developed prior year 2000, please make sure to obtain all necessary Y2K updates. Today was Y2K deja vu. I installed WFW 3.11 and some files had 1/01/80 creation dates. Googled and downloaded WFWY2KUP.EXE from Microsoft's website (amazing its still available). Problem fixed.
I'm really missing the old times with Windows 3.11 and MS-DOS, when almost anyone had computers and actually you really knew what was going on in your system, the key files, the necessary skills to solve your problems (as there was not practical tech. service at that time) on your own and the joy after solving them. Now everything has been changed to help a largest amount of population, but I've to reckon that you really learnt about computing then.
C'mon, be real, maybe it was fine for you at home, but for me as an administrator it was hell. Take DOS for example; every application needed its own printer driver! Not to mention all the fiddling with config.sys and autoexec.bat just to get some programs running with available memory, especially when you had extra cards installed!
And as for Windows 3.11... hell! I don't know how many times people complained about their system claiming not having enough memory, when they clearly did, even Microsoft was unable to solve the issues.
i have win 3.11 in. but what network drivers and sound and video should be used? and how do you get it from the real drive onto the virtual one? use a cd?
@BMAN94 you can get windows 3.11 of myos . com and i got the whole DOS collection (1.0 - 6.21) so you can get dos 3.33 and i think he was using DOS 6.21. You can also download it from myos . com
i've got all the necessary disks to install 3.11, and I'm trying to use virtual pc, but when I begin installing it says "setup is unable to create the specified directory". I've tried chaning the directroy etc but it still doesn't work. Anybody got any ideas?
You put the floppy in, then go add new hardware in control panel, and it should find the sound card and then click have disk. The science is unlessz it has an auto run file on it, it will not automatically run. If you nare doing it on a virtual pc, click action and then install virtual machine additions. Then, open file manager and click on d or e and then it should have a few programs ending in .exe. click on them and it should run an installer. Apart from that I don't know. Hope this helps.
What is the song please?

How do i install a sound card, i got a driver floppy, (I found it in my garage) i inserted it, and it did nothing
ShadowRSonic 3 years ago
You put the floppy in, then go add new hardware in control panel, and it should find the sound card and then click have disk. The science is unlessz it has an auto run file on it, it will not automatically run. If you nare doing it on a virtual pc, click action and then install virtual machine additions. Then, open file manager and click on d or e and then it should have a few programs ending in .exe. click on them and it should run an installer. Apart from that I don't know. Hope this helps.
peterclarke4 3 years ago
or open control panel, click drivers, then add, then Ok. Now, insert the disk into A:\(floppy). Then follow what it says on the screen.
P.S. The other was for Windows 9.x.
peterclarke4 3 years ago
if you want to get the video dirver use WinRar and go find the Virtual Machine additions and the S3 Trio Driver would be there
