  • Excellent presentation, No matter how you pronounce it the bottom line is it takes good pictures, and has outstanding reatures.

  • I watch this video over and over again, i'm so looking forward for it :)

  • hi i want to buy Nikon 14-24Mm F2.8G Af-S Ed Zoom Nikkor Lense with this camera, is this a perfect match, i am amateur

  • DEAR SANTA..........

  • I hope your employers know your worth; you are an ace broadcaster. I always come to you first and last before buying a camera.

  • @malachimovies Thankyou! I am my own employer though - cameralabs is a one-man operation, so please support me!

  • @malachimovies

I can not agree more! Absolutely fantastic - especially because I just got the d300s just a couple of hours ago and thank god the review did not make make me regreting it one bit! Thanks for the review!

  • Excellent review. There is one question I have. I currently have a Nikon D90. Is it worthy to upgrade to a D300s, or any other model. Your input would be most helpful. Cheers!

  • Nikon just killed this camera with the poser D7000.

  • D7000 or this? :)

  • hi there Gordan....i'm still new in taking photo could you tell me what are the best model for me?????and also a good price that i can affort

  • watch my video of portraits from khmer shot on canon 7d and 50 d and nikon d300 s

    lightroom , and canon 17- 40 , 50mm 1.4, 100 macro , 70 - 300 canon ..

  • i own the d300s, the only thing it lacks is the video quality, which isn't very good, thats why the newer versions are better.

All SLR's with a good lens are great.

  • Hi Gordon..im a bit confused whether to get nikon d300s or nikon d7000..for your opinion which one is better and which one should i get.tq

  • @TheJokerific I too have the same question!! But according to my "research" the d300s has slightly better image quality, as the resolution is lower, so the pixels can receive more light. Also, the d300s's sensor is slightly bigger (though too less to make a difference as Its still a DX format). Actually, Nikon did the same with d700 i.e packing less pixels to improve low light performance in lesser ISOs. But there is no point in shooting video with DSLRs.

  • @NIBIR98 So, the d7000 does not make much of a difference with the d300s.Well, I AM NOT SURE!!!

  • Is it better then a Cannon 7D? For Filming wise?

  • I have been using a D80 for over 2 years now and think its time to upgrade. This camera caught my attention so my question is should I go withit or is there another in similar price range. I am not interested in Canon simply because i have a lot of Nikon lenses and there is no point in shifting.

  • It's "Ni-Kon", you sons of bitches!!!

Anyone who says "Ny- Kon" (like Nike) needs to get their tongues CHOPPED off~!!!!

the ignorance is amazing...go out and see the world more...

  • @bigfatdick5000 + 1.. like Ne in neon and con as conman.. . not ny-kon.. lol

  • @bigfatdick5000 YOU SIR, ARE STUPID

of course, everyone has his own pronunciation, but there is 'unwritten' rule.

every thing that is made, should be called the way owners and company call it :)

IN THIS CASE, NIKON IS JAPAN CORPORATION, AND THEY CALL IT NEE-KON, not NY-KON, not NI-KON, but NEE-kon

  • like this

  • gordon please help, i am a photo enthusiast who is debating over this or the nikon d7000, i felt both in my hands today and the d300s felt more comfortable to grip, now i want either for landscapes mainly and some portraits but mainly landscapes/seascapes. i also will add the tokina 12-24 or the tokina 11-16 wide angles, so would also like your thoughts on these lenses too if you will gordon to match either the d7000 or the d300s, please advise

  • @atyl1972 Nikon D7000 benefits 16 MP ISO 100 to 25600 Full HD 1080p with AF-C Improved metering Two user defined setting (U1, U2) Smaller and lighter Dual SD card slot Dedicated live view switch Scene modes for beginners Nikon D300s benefits Faster 8 fps with battery grip 51 AF points, 15 cross type Dual CF/SD card slot Dedicated switches for release mode, metering, and AF Better ergonomic especially for people with large hands
  • D7000 or D300s?

  • is the d300s weather proof like the olympus E3 ?

  • @TaskF0rceClan Yes..

  • Thank u thank u thank u for this review. Very helpful

  • good day sir.. i'm just curious and i really don't know on how to take a picture that is black and white, and with only one color focused.. just like a girl in a black and white image, while her dress is color yellow.. please help.. because some of them to this by just editing the picture, but some says it can be done in taking picture... please help.. tnx...

  • @khayiekaze15 That process is known as 'Selective Colouring'. It can be done with Adobe Photoshop..

  • idk about other people but i think nye-kon sounds like more professional.

  • @ithree6mafia well, nikon is a japanese company, so the nearest pronunciation that fits it must be "nick-on". but very well, given the nature of the western tongue, saying "nye-con" is acceptable.

  • I take picture sequences for a drumming magazine and i make skateboarding sequences for my friends and thats definitely a camera I would recommend

  • hi gordon! i was wondering, in your opinion, which is better, the D300s or the D7000? i really cant decide on what to buy. can u hep me out? :D

  • @aironicskater what are u going for. how much is ur budget.

  • hey cameralabs, love your reviews, but i was was wondering if you could help me as i wish to buy the nikon d300s or canon 7d but cant deside which is better, or which will provide me the best picture quality!? can you help? thanks!

  • Thank you for an excellent review. I keep seeing idiots on here saying they've reviewed something or other & all it is is a glorified run-down of what something has. They fail to mention how well/badly it does something, or a full list of features, examples of what it can do, or what new features it has over a predecessor etc, whatever the item is. You on the other hand have made a kick-ass review, & it was exactly what I would have asked for. Thank you. Respect. I can make an informed choice.

  • Should I get the new d7000 or this camera? I don't know if i should go for the 16.2 megapixels of the d7000 or the 51 point focusing system of the d300s

  • @TheChubbyKid 51 points! That's incredible. Not sure about the second part.

  • How many focus points does this have. Does it have an internal focus motor?

  • Can I use my lenses from the D80 On the D300s ??

  • @sandydee08 Yes. I started with d80 also and switched to d300s. Still use the d80 for back up.

  • Can i use my old lenses from my D80 on the D300s ??

  • Thank you, you answered the one of two question I had with this camera. That the cards can be used at the same time. My other question is if shooting at 8fps does the camera still use both cards and/or does it slow the camera down?

  • @Daddygoodfun Good question and one I've answered in detail in my review at cameralabs . com - check the drive section towards the bottom of the features page.

  • @cameralabs - thank you for a superb review. You say that it manages only five minute clips in high def. How long clips does it do in lower resolutions?

  • Is the Nikon D300s better then the Nikon D300?

  • @ColdingoVich its better because it has 2 card slot and video future but, image quality is EXACTLY the same .. cuz they share the same sensor

  • hi gordon, thnx for the review, question, what would you suggest me? I'm planing to buy a d300s, but an acquaintance said, a d90 is better and cheaper. so what should i buy, also i'm thinking to buy the d700, so either a DX or FX., thnx for the reply.

  • Hi Gordon...great reviews every time ....thanks.

  • I'm planning to buy this camera body, but im not sure what lens to get. I already have a 35mm and an 18-105mm lens, should i get a 16-85mm or a 10-24 wide angle lens?

  • wish i could understand him

  • Which camera is best?

    A. The Nikon D700

    B. The Nikon D300S

    - Tim.

  • @ColdingoVich D700 hands down.

  • @iGeekPro ?

  • @ColdingoVich D700 is the higher level, and its Full Frame...

so if you have money go for d700 :P

  • I had a look at this camera in the shops. As an upgrade for my Nikon D40

It looked a bit too advanced for me. I am going to wait for the all new D3100 or perhaps a D90.

    Thanks for this review Gordon.

  • I really like the mic input, nice review. :P

  • Do you have a review of the Sony NEX-5 or NEX-3 ? Keep up the good reviews Gordan they always are very informative.

  • @Dr23rippa Hopefully in the next few weeks - but it'll only be at cameralabs . com...

  • Hey dude im loving your videos and the website is even better!! Could you make a video review of the D200?? I know you have it on the webstie but it would be nice to see it in practice....thanks gordon!

  • @NorfolkWestern34 all the cameras i test are on loan from the companies, so the d200 was returned years ago. theres also no point in reviewing an old model, sorry!

  • @cameralabs Haha i figured youd say its too old...im looking into buying one because i really cant afford a D300 or D300s right now..thanks alot anyway!

  • Hey, great review but one question..

Why is the maximum recording time per clip 5 minutes? Is it because of the memory card of the software?

  • @jandearabier I don't think that's a big problem if you're albe to edit and stuff and i think it's because of the card formatting.

  • Haha - machine gun camera xD just kidding, thanks for your reviews!

  • I'm new to the digital SLR world, how many different kinds of lenses can this camera use?

  • Wich one is better this one or the d300

  • @chriselpuma d300s is new version, it records video, more buttons on the body so its little bit faster, higher FPS rate. but image quality is EXACTLY the same

  • You are the master of camera reviews.

  • @volcomvenom Thanks! Please do also check out my reviews at cameralabs . com, as there's much more information there! PS - if you'd like to support me, please shop for anything at the partner stores page at cameralabs . com!

  • my dad has a tamron 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that he uses for his Nikon F4. Would I be able to use it with this body?

    Thanks so much!

  • NIKON ROCKS!

  • does it take viD?!

  • i want this soooo bad

  • Your reviews are excellent Gordan thankyou.

Only problem is, you've made it a really tough decision for me to chose between the Nikon D300s or the Canon EOS 7D (which I want mostly for the HD Quality).

    Pulling my hair out!

  • @findingmiddlegrey Have you read my 7D review at cameralabs . com yet? I compare both cameras in great detail... that should help you...

  • @findingmiddlegrey

so... which one have you chose?

im into nikon but y would like to know your choice!

    greetings

  • @axla

Hi, I ended up going with the Canon 550D, which has the same amount of megapixels as the 7D and also (apparently, I haven't sussed it out yet) has 1080p HD video capabilities.

I would have loved the 7D and could have eventually gotten it for a good price on the net but I decided to just go into a store and after playing around with the 550D, comparing it to the 50D and seeing what they were charging for the 7D with twin lens kit (around 4000!) I decided the 550D was fine for me.

  • whats the highest the ISO can go before noise is present? Which has a more sensitive sensor? the d700 or d300s? i dont know which one to buy (putting aside the fx/dx)

  • I will upgrade my D90 for this in the near future. I always visit your website and read your review before buying anything, just like what I did with my D90. Keep it Up! Autofocus and External Mic for the Movie Mode had me at hello hehe

  • thanks Gordon, this review helped me a lot. I'm got this nikkon with the same lens you mentioned. Im taking it to Japan to capture some great scenery :)

  • O_O the FPS (frames per second) on it is AMAZING! holy damn.. the d300s is better than the d300 hands down..

    I WANT IT SOO BAD!!

  • Going on a trip to Taiwan. And you will be going downtown to Taipei and want to take pictures of buildings around town... like Taipei 101. What would be a good lens to use? Or if I go to Shilin Night Market or any other Night Market... what would be a good lens to use?

  • @krayzieillaskan 18-200

  • Thank you Gordon. Your information is always helpful.

  • you have the best job in the world gordan, your so lucky

  • i have this and for the price the quality is amazing :D

  • a) Wat's the max aperture on this beautiful lens u have mounted on here at the D300s and b) Can we please have you review the D3 or the D3s. Thanx once again and keep up the superb work, cheers

  • @zeyshaan The lens here is the Nikkor 16-85mm - please see my review of it at cameralabs . com for full details - and also for MUCH more information in my D300s review. These videos just scratch the surface!

  • @cameralabs Thanx Gordon, I'll be sure to check it out right now, appreciate the immediate response, thanx again

  • Hi Gordon, first n foremost: I think you do a fantastic job with these wonderfully insightful reviews and just two months ago u basically helped me decide on a Nikon D5000 instead of a Canon 500D (based on my expectations and needs from my first DSLR) and I have never been happier, so thank you sincerely for that. I did want to direct a few questions your way though...

  • i say its NEEkon.

  • Very informative, many thanks for this good review!

  • Without a real improve (IQ), plus 700 usd in my country over my "old" D300... not my target now. In fact... the same cam just with video, better expend money in glasses.

  • Top notch review! My D300s should arrive in a couple of days, this has made me so much more excited now.

  • pelatone di merda

    scoppato

  • NIKON RULES!

  • Thanks for the review, I really enjoyed it. You pretty much answered all of my questions regarding this model.

  • for video... the cannon 5d mark II gives you 1080 p hd videos and variable speeds... for nikon what's the "equivalent"? I'd apreciate the help. Your reviews are really useful.

  • It's pronounced Knee-con.

  • Hey Gordon,

Your review is superb as always. Thanks for your efforts. I like the structured way of reviewing.

    Cheers,

    André from Holland

  • Which compact flash card do you suggest me to buy for my D300s?

  • Just wanted to say Gordon, your the Coolest! I trust your reviews %100 unbiased and I am a North American south Texan Photographer and I always say NEEKON becuase it is proper and it sounds snazzy! I get made fun of but its correct! Thank you Gordon. Anyways.

Have you reviewed the tokina 11-16mm F2.8 lens if so what would you think about this coupled with the Nikon D90 as a wide angle with minimal distortion???

  • @extrahumane great to hear you say Neekon! I havrnt' tested the Tamron 11-18mm, but I think there's some Nikon owners with it on the cameralabs forum - check it out!

  • Great review.

Thank you for taking the time.

  • Might want to check where your Nikon is actually manufactured. Canon is Japanese, Made in Japan. Nikon made in philipines.

  • Nikon has manufacturing plants in many places, including Japan and Thailand. it doesn't make a scrap of difference to the end result.

  • @Mexico911 I disagree with you. It does make a difference where a product is manufactured. To make this silly, would you rather have your product manufactured in a country where the labourers are happy, well fed and focused on their job or manufactured in a region with a greater disadvantage? Next time you go in for an operation, ask for the 3rd world country equipment to be used.

  • @Mexico911 yup, we do have manufacturing plants here bro, as well as canon and the others. but of course, the main is still in japan.

  • I'm finding a trend....

people who like Nikon, like Apple

people who like Canon, like PC's

  • Why not like Nikon AND Apple :D

  • @plus16hrs I've found that the other way round most of the Canon owners I know use Macs

  • Comment removed

  • Dude, it might be pronounced that where you're from, but remember it's a Japanese company and they pronounce it Neekon. You may find the second part of my Chase Jarvis interview interesting, as he's a US photographer who admits it's only pronounced N-eye-kon by North Americans. Apology accepted!

  • @cameralabs you tell 'em!!!!

    Laura, you've been served!

  • You fail at life.

  • @Laura4677 I am living out in Asia....it is Neekon....trust me....Neyekon is just Americans being lazy again (I can say that i am one) lol

  • @dyno114104 yeah i think a good deal of real Nikon users in north america know that it's pronounced Neekon. trust me, i've tried but it's just the way it's pronounced here so i just stuck with N-eye-kon. Got tired of trying to correct people knowing that it'll never pick up. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. In this aspect, nobody cares.

  • You always do great reviews! Keep them coming!

  • Is this a good upgrade from the D80? Thank you and nice review.

  • Definitely. I'm making that move myself in two weeks. I almost feel lucky that I couldn't make the move to the d300 because I'm eager to shoot video through my 105mm macro. It's a very good upgrade if you do much of your shooting outdoors.

  • Also it uses the same battery and it has an SD slot for your existing cards.

  • @jpq08 Its a huuge upgrade! :) I got a D80 myself, and thinking of buying this one. Much better improvement on the fps aswell with alot more.

  • Gordon You have the absolute best Camera reviews on the web. I just wanted to comment on your Great Videos. Thanks for all you do.

  • Thanks! Don't forget you can support me by shopping (for anything!) at the partner stores page at cameralabs . com! Cheers!

  • I will be glad to support you as soon as Nikon comes out or releases some new DSLR's with HD Video, until then I am waiting. I am afraid of Canon autofocus and low light performance. I think Nikon may have a slight edge, and I think a refresh is upcoming shortly. I may be wrong, do you have a hunch on new items by Nikon? Thanks again, UR Reviews are THE BEST !!!!!

  • What external microphone is suggested for this camera?

  • @stavrophotography ...you can use any kind of microphone...i use it with a sennheiser mic and it works just great

  • The SD card remembered the last picture number taked with my ex camera,a D80,and started from that number on my new camera?

  • hello!how can i know the real number of shots made with an D300S?I recently buy a D300S and i put a new CF card, and an old SD card. When i started to take pictures, the number of pictures started from 4125,something like that.Primary card is SD,secondary CF.Help me!Thank you,i love your videos!Because of you i own a D300S now,i`m verry happy!

  • shoot a picture in jpeg. download opanda.Iexif 2.3.....open the picture in that program and it will tell you the picture number count. Thats how you tell how many times that your camera has been shot.

  • can u do review on tamron 18-270 mm lens plz? i just saw it and looks pretty good but want to know what u think....ty

  • Sorry, Tamron refuses to send their lenses in for me to review - perhaps they have something to hide.

  • @cameralabs I was given a Tamron AF 70-300MM F/4-5.6 LD Macro lens that I use with my d50. I was a little concerned by your statement about tamron refusing to send you lenses to review. My 70-300 lens DOES work with the d300s

  • I'm sure it does work, I just can't comment on something I haven't reviewed. I am also concerned about any company which refuses to send products for me to test.

  • Dude, i´ve been a follower of yours for some time now, awsome vids btw, and for ann the nikonians here...GO NIKON. I just sold me whole canon arsenal and am going for a fresh and better start with nikon.

I would like to see a vid on the new prime lenses from nikon Gordon, and the sigmas. U really need to do sigma vids..

  • I can't unless Sigma (and Tamron) send me products to review. PS - check out the lenses section at cameralabs . com for recommended Nikkor models...

  • Canon? Canon has always been a "price leader" meaning that they go for one fancy feature, and sacrifice the quality. Nikon has always built way better cameras. I have a D300s, D5000, and about a dozen Nikons from years past. I am proud to say that I have never wasted a dime on a Canon SLR, and never will.

  • I did. I bought a 35mm EOS 1v and was very disappointed. My Minolta XG-1 from 1978 was actually better. I wound up giving the EOS away.

I would love to have a D300s or even a D90 but had to cheap out a bit and just bought a D5000. More money and less res than an t1i but far better image quality.

  • Don't sell the D5000 short! It's a great camera! I went to the D300s because I didn't see enough advantage of the D90 over the D5000. I am using D5000 as a back up to my D300s. The D5000 is light weight and easy to work with. I went to Peru over Xmas and shot Machu Picchu with my D5000. I have gotten rave reviews.

  • It seems liek canon cares more about video than actual photography.

  • Hooray for nikon!

  • Excellent review, as usual. Thanks!

  • To be honest, the Q (quiet) funktion seems louder then the regular funktion for the shutter

  • You have to hear it in person. It actually sounds much quieter.

  • actually, its a little bit more quiet the usual. I've tried it before

  • what would you prefer nikon d5000, d90 or d300s?

  • @lapelos15

That depends on your level of experience!

If you start with SLR photography I would recommend the D90, because it already feels good in you hand, but is for most people not too bulky and has a good image quality.

I personally prefer the D300(s) because of the size, I always use a batterygrip, because of control of the camera and it makes it easy for portrait, and the Autofocus for example, it is a dream =)

But you need some experience, otherwise you won't have fun with it ;)

  • @lapelos15 I have a D90. its cheaper and has the same CMOS sensor as the D300s so essentially you'll be getting the same picture quality

  • hello there! i have a question.. is the D300s allow it to use my old lenses like the AF lenses instead of the AF-S lenes from Nikkor and HSM from Sigma?

    Thanks

  • i don't think nikon has changed the lens mount (nikon F-Mount), so any DX lens are fully compatible and other lens will work only in Manual mode and/or some features won't work (i hope i am not wrong:))

  • yes, it has a built in AF motor

  • good review, the 16-85mm lens are the best

  • Another good review, thank you sir!

  • whats the price for it?

  • i bought it and it cost me 650$ with the memory card

  • @TheMinusGirl only $650??

  • where ??

  • awesome review and very informative for this current d200 user. looking forward to more megapixels for the work I do and please check out my stop-motion vids to see how far i've pushed my wonderful old d200... a true workhorse with over 220,000 shutter actuations and counting!

  • Loooove Queenstown :)

  • In your opinion, if it werent for video mode. Which one wuold you like more? Canon 7D or Nikon D300s?

  • D300s for photography hands down.. but unfortunately I do video as well so I opted for the 7D.. damn you canon!

  • aww D: Come back to Nikon!

    We miss you :(

  • is the d300 better then the d80?

  • @cng90 yes

  • shut up fucking canon nerd

  • wow! this is a fighter jet with machine gun! 7fps, combined with the virtual horizon thing? whoa!

  • D300s or D700?? obviously the D700 is better, but is it worth almost £1000 extra?? please give me some advice!! I really don't want to get a Canon!!! so in other words, what is the best camera for around £1500???
