Of course, this video is rather narrow in its scope. I agree with the sentiment in part, but more comes under the estate tax then liquid assets. My grandparent's ranch for instance, which was built over a period of 100 years and five generations would fall under it. Though it has never made my family rich, the land value under the estate tax could very well make sure that it has to be sold into a housing development. Many family farms, ranches, and small businesses come under the estate tax.
An estate tax is the biggest form of govt thievery that exists today. People should be able to leave money to others when they die, or at any time, with no tax. The tax rates are fine. The rich pay more according to the rates. Close the loopholes. That's how the rich get an unfair break. I agree with Dems on that.

The estate tax is lower now than it was under Bush. The tax on 7.9 million was around 2.5 million in 2008. This year, under Obama, the tax would be just over 1 million. Liberals complain about the rich getting favors but it's the democrats that do it. The same thing happened in the 90's. The rich's wealth under Clinton skyrocketed while the poor and middle class stayed fairly stagnate. You vote for the people that are responsible for the things you complain about. Why?
Maher misses the entire point of getting rid of the estate tax. If I want to save a little so that my children can have a little extra when I die, the gov. shouldn't get 35% of it. Why is it that if I can work hard and save my money, it gets taxed, but if I work hard and lose it all in Vegas before I die instead of saving it for my kids, it doesn't get taxed. There is no private insurance company that is half as efficient as medicare, and the US has a less efficient healthcare system than countries with government run health care.

I can only speak from personal experience, though. The DMV; the gov run hospital; retirement homes. Granted there really isn't a private counterpart to the DMV but I think we can at least agree that you really can't use the word efficient at all when talking about the DMV.

Of course, this video is rather narrow in its scope. I agree with the sentiment in part, but more comes under the estate tax then liquid assets. My grandparent's ranch for instance, which was built over a period of 100 years and five generations would fall under it. Though it has never made my family rich, the land value under the estate tax could very well make sure that it has to be sold into a housing development. Many family farms, ranches, and small businesses come under the estate tax.

An estate tax is the biggest form of govt thievery that exists today. People should be able to leave money to others when they die, or at any time, with no tax. The tax rates are fine. The rich pay more according to the rates. Close the loopholes. That's how the rich get an unfair break. I agree with Dems on that.

The estate tax is lower now than it was under Bush. The tax on 7.9 million was around 2.5 million in 2008. This year, under Obama, the tax would be just over 1 million. Liberals complain about the rich getting favors but it's the democrats that do it. The same thing happened in the 90's. The rich's wealth under Clinton skyrocketed while the poor and middle class stayed fairly stagnate. You vote for the people that are responsible for the things you complain about. Why?

Maher misses the entire point of getting rid of the estate tax. If I want to save a little so that my children can have a little extra when I die, the gov. shouldn't get 35% of it. Why is it that if I can work hard and save my money, it gets taxed, but if I work hard and lose it all in Vegas before I die instead of saving it for my kids, it doesn't get taxed. What an odd world liberals want to live in.

I can only speak from personal experience, though. The DMV; the gov run hospital; retirement homes. Granted there really isn't a private counterpart to the DMV but I think we can at least agree that you really can't use the word efficient at all when talking about the DMV.

If the gov gets sued (rare but it DOES happen) the money comes out of YOUR pocket. If the US wasn't so sue-happy, I doubt that would happen as much. As for the DMV, you're just making shit up. Keep this in mind- when Republicans say half of Americans don't even pay their taxes, what they're referring to are PEOPLE WHO LIVE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE AND CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY TAXES. Currently, the poverty line is about $22,000 for a family of four people. Can you imagine what it would be like to house and feed four people on $22,000 a year in this economy? Look back at that statement before, half of Americans don't pay taxes... really think about that and where the poverty line is.

We got republicans introducing a bill in Texas to limit sales taxes to $18,000 on a multi million dollar yacht sell because Florida is doing it. I do think it is kind of silly to tax money that's already been taxed several times (income tax, customers paid tax just 2 give it 2 the business in the first place, etc.) but we're havin serious deficit problems. u can't go 2 war and hav the same budget u did when u weren't @ war. u can't pay for war witout raisin taxes its just that simple. in world war II they rationed everythin for goodness sake and we won't give up an extra 7%? come one people u pay or u stay out of war. its just that simpl
