The north processed these crops at a huge mark-up. There was a huge demand for cheap crops. The anti-slavery mvm't was rolling and Lincoln, the anti-slavery candidate was elected. The civil war was not over slavery. There were a wide variety of reason why the Civil War happend but slavery was not one of them.
