Youtube has broadened my musical horizons. My opinion, ALL music takes talent and devotion. It is an art and skill. I have been able to find apreciation in all types of music. Talent is talent is talent regardless of the genre.
This is juke joint. I can imagine back in the day Basie, Ella and others hanging out after hours eating greasy friend chicken throwing back cheap liquor and jamming the blues. Wow..
Thats not Harold Jones on drums, if this was 1979 it probably was Mickey Roker. Butch Miles left the band earlier in 79 and i think Mickey took over after.
I was there with my dad!!!!!Now he passed away and I say thank to my dad for this wonderful moment that we have spend toghether......and the passion for jazz music
Ella sums it up when she says the one and only Count Basie . What a marvellous rendition of a twelve bar blues by Ella ably supported by sax and trombone solos.
I saw Fitzgerald about a year after this when she did a concert in St. Petersburg, FL and was absolutely blown away. What a singer! I had already seen the Basie Orchestra at Chautaqua, NY a few years earlier. Similar reaction. I feel so lucky to have seen some of the greatest musicians of the 20th century alive and kicking . . .
you should listen to peggy lee, lena horne, dean martin, sarah vaughan, melody gardot, billie holiday, diana krall, duke ellington, miles davis, frank sinatra, nina simone, perry como, etc
It ain't got that thing, if it ain't got that swing! This is how music should sound! Nobody does it better than Miss Ella and The Count! God bless their souls. :)
@Coastergamer200 well, I would if I was a saxist, maybe a guitarist, but I'm a pianist. And if I was a vocalist, I probably wouldn't think of it. Ella is amazing.
Ella Sings! Count Basie Swings! What else is there to say. I going to even try to rip off some of Botty's solo. The whole songs great. Thanks zhanges5
I once escorted the great Ella from a symphony stage to her dressing room, and eventually found myself sitting next to her while she patiently and graciously greeted her fans and signed autographs. She seemed genuinely humble. The Greatest!
So true johnroland, the greats like Ella and Count Basie were so COOL, so grounded and humble in spirit by comparison to a lot of the arrogant, shallow and talent-shy showbiz types in our midst today who are always acting out and boasting of their "greatness".
The great talents never have to boast, because imperfections and all, their talent always shows.
YES-She had spontaneity, and articulate phrasing. HER VOICE WAS/IS AN INSTRUMENT,[all its own ]and you aint gonna find it or buy it anywhere-"LOVE TO ELLA"

Why would anyone think the soloists are trying to "out wail" Ella, or anyone else?
Isn't it all about music, and making as much out of it as possible?
They all are superb.
