  • Woody hired a bunch of young turks out of the great college jazz programs and found a way to blend some of rock into big band jazz. Woody's work in the late 60's and 70's was just so dynamic. He really saved the best for last.

  • loving that baritone sax!

  • Woody was always open to new sounds -dig the use of the Fender Rhoades and electric bass. Even though the sound on this clip is a hair rough in spots, there is a definite groove going here which transcends the sound quality- It move! It is interesting how this arrangement changed over the years from the first time the band recorded it at Montreaux with Gregory Herbert, I believe, to the 40th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall to this clip.Added brass section riffs and whathaveyounot.15 stars!

  • There is a reference at the end of the song to the French hymn, probably a dedication to the people living in Nices

  • THE best!!!! Love love love

  • serious chazz-funk

  • great video

  • Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay

  • Superb trombone section, great job Birch!

  • Just Fantastic-I saw Woody and the Band do this at a special 300[i think] birthday celebration at Albany, N.Y.. Received a thounderous standing ovation. We miss you Woody.

  • excellent video thanks aaron copland is the best musician

  • I love how Woody always had awesome bari players, who you could always hear!

  • Haha I think Copeland would be rocking a bit of, erm, wood after this. Awesome!

  • This is Awesome!!! My daughter just began playing the French Horn and I wanted her to get a taste of how great it can be, and of course, Copeland came to mind, so I went looking and found this performance!!! It blew us both away!!! Awesome!!!

  • What is it with great funky music and porno-staches? were they just born to go together?

Also, I wonder what Copland thinks of this... I would hope he would feel honored.

  • my monitor can barely contain the funky jive of this video.

  • I want a remastered studio version of this! I wish there was a Woody Herman CD that I could find! Amazon and iTunes both have nothing close.

  • wasn't there a funky version of Also sprach Zarathustra.. used in "being there"... sounds like the same performers.. ? anyways, that was ages ago.. back during my stone tablet days.

  • @springloadedchicken Yeah man, it was done by the group Deodato

  • Not bad At first I didnt like but its hard not to!!!! Because normally I only like the origanal versoin of songs!!! But you could do it with out the FLUTE!!!!!! yuck!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is one of the best rendition of the Fanfare for the Common man i heard in a long long time. Heay, it's WOODY HERMAN, a genius

  • My parents dragged me to see Woody and the herd in 1975. I've been hooked on big band jazz ever since. If you can find a recording of the reunion concert

    somewhere grab it, It's amazing.

  • This is like the opening theme to a show I couldn't stay up to see in the 70s!!

  • Watch TVShows like "Fanfare For The Common Man" (Copland) at W W W . TV-Vide . NET

  • THIS IS MUSIC!!!!! Fanfare for a "felling" man!!!! Amazing.

  • always loved woodies bands, always progressive foward thinking, and the best arrangements

  • Variations on a theme from Copeland but certainly not Copeland.

    Sounds like "Shaft" in Honduras.

  • Nick Brignola on the bari sax, not G. S.

  • Ron Burgundy on the jazz flute, ladies and gentlemen.

  • this version is brilliant

  • I love it. I love the funky jazzy feel that it gives. Oh. And Bari sax man is killing it. (good way, for the morons)

  • trash..stick to what Copland made

  • if you think this is trash you know nothing about music

  • this is some good shit!

  • Yeah, its an American tragedy. (That's sarcasm, for the morons out there). Get off your high horse. It's a unique take on a standard.

  • Comment removed

  • It's certainly interesting hearing Dave Laroca copping some Jaco licks, especially since he was pretty much at the top of his game in '79.

  • trane1959 - Why are you such an idiot? You always seem to be the know-it-all. Instead, you get shot down most of the time. Well, figures = trane1959. You [may] know a lot about Trane, but little of anyone else.

  • Dude, I am right. It's not Bob Mintzer, it's Belden, the guy who posted these videos. Thanks Bob, again. Lala has been playing in the city a lot with his bro. Maybe he will start to get the real recogniztion he deserves.

  • awsome!!!!!!!! its funky!

  • A young Bob Mintzer (Yellowjackets) on tenor, I believe.

  • nope

  • are you kidding me? It's Bob Belden, Mr. Shittingme

  • Ah, Woody at his best. How I miss the giants of Big Bands - Herman, Kenton, Ellington, Basie

  • Cool..I really like this arrangement!

  • I'm a traditionalist...but not bad to "up" my deprestion

  • Wow this takes me back. I saw this exact band play this piece at the Toronto Musicians Union Ball in 1979 - this was their signature encore. This dude could rock it out - jazz musicians don't grow old they just grow. Now my 18 year old daughter wants to be Tommy Dorsey - lead a swing band.

Gotta love the great american art form building on great american composers like Copland.

    Benny - love ya man.

  • What a tribute to Copland! He would have love it!

  • He recieved royaltys for this and ELPs record

I think they were trying to sound like Deodato with this arrangement.

  • So you're point is what?

Copeland was all about the people using his music and what moved them in the here and now!

  • what do you mean he w-ould have loved it he was alive to hear it and collect money for it

  • So you're point is what?

Copeland was all about the people using his music and what moved them in the here and now!

  • Haha, an Aaron Copland remix. I love it! :D

  • This is bloody brilliant!

  • Nice

  • funky...

  • Jeez. Smulyan is king in this.

  • You lost me at the first solo. Copland wrote it pretty well. Was it improved upon here?

  • Seconded. Who cares...? It was certainly celebrated.

  • great video..saw the band in the early 70's...do you have any footage of the late 60's band with bill chase..light my fire etc...

  • Very cool, thanks.

  • is there anywhere to buy this footage as a complete concert? It would be very special for me to get this? Thanks Bob for the clip

  • @Bobbelden You sure? What horn is Gary Anderson playing? Didn't he write this? Not trying to troll, just honestly curious.

  • being that i was in the band and this version of the herd was together for 8 months, i can assure you that Dick Mitchell is the flutist. Gary Anderson did arrange the music but by this time he was involved in the Film/TV biz in Manhattan...
