This guy has a good voice, but he hits a lot of bad notes, . He can sing, he just need to clean up those bad notes, he may be very young, I don't know.
Randy was so wrong when he said "I don't think there is anything you can't sing" because he sang this song SO WELL, so PERFECT for his voice, yet did not connect that well every other time he sang. If he could have done this well on every song, I think he would have easily won the show, but that didn't happen. Maybe the right manager/producer can bring this magic to an album, and outsell them all
Jacob Lusk is a great performer. He needed to find his voice inside and some guidance with the song choices. Motown richness and greatness all over again.
When I saw this performance, I also thought he should be at least at the top 2. But future performances wasn't even close to this one, so that is probably his downfall. But no doubt talented.
Lastly, justs because he is or act gay doesn't have anything to do with his wonderful voice. He is who he is and he is my favorite singer at the moment. This was the best song of the contest. Had he continued to sing songs like this he might have gone a bit further. The Judges kept trying to get him to go back to songs like this but he picked some dumb ones.

It's been over a month now since we last heard this voice. Go back now and measure it against some of the others you hear on the radio. He was really good, no, extraordinary. Don't get caught up in the drama, his voice was exceptional, particularly for his range. Luther,as smooth as he was, lost some of that range in his later years.

Here are a few of my problems with his vocals...1) He tends to sing really sharp and sometimes off. 2) He lacks voice control - lots of sloppy runs 3) He OVER SINGS every note. 4) His natural vabratto is very shakey 5) He sings from the back of this throat, opposed to his diaphragm.

Incorrect breathing and singing from the back of your throat can eventually cause damage to your vocal cords, and constant hoarsness.

I think he is "great for some songs"; I too have heard him sound just awful on some things, yet, for this song, it was the best version I ever heard (just my taste). his vocal acrobatics is perfect...it's like going round and round climbing from one octave higher or lower...I love his vibrato...it's almost perfect...his only problem is his stage presence sometimes especially with his dancing with no air song.

I've watched Idol for 9 years. Jacob neither had the charisma nor the breath of great song choices to win the title, but this song alone (minus the up tempo portions of the song) was one of the best by far. In fact, I'd say he outdid Luther on this song to tell you the truth.

First of all...correct breathing, voice control, vabratto, enunciation and diction are all basic fundamentals of singing . It's like learning your ABC's before you can read, or crawling before you can walk. There's no way around it! And Michael DID sing from his diaphragm!

@SEFYH No I'm not saying you don't have to use your diaphragm my point is that just because you sing from your diaphragm that doesn't instantly make you the chosen one. I am saying that it's a combination of things none of which seems to matter anymore. Not just that but the guy obviously has something because he was on American Idol and U on youtube watching his performance months later giving your top 10 reasons he falls short makes you come off as a frustrated singer urself!

This was the best song of the contest. Had he continued to sing songs like this he might have gone a bit further. The Judges kept trying to get him to go back to songs like this but he picked some dumb ones.

@arthurfla i have no issue with him being gay, it's his drag queen persona that gets in the way. drag is fine if that is how you want to present yourself but his soft puffy body and face/hand gestures confuse people. there is a place in the business for him but he has to be authentic and real on how he presents himself. my advise is to lose 30 lbs and muscle up a bit. stop being judy garland and man up

@exbf22 There have been a LOT of male performers who weren't exactly studs and still had very successful careers. What you fail to realize is that human beings, gay or straight, cover the whole spectrum from masculine to feminine. People need to judge a singing competition on singing, not about waist size, color, sexual orientation, or even flamboyance. FYI: Steve Tyler (idol judge and lead singer of Aerosmith)wouldn't be caught dead on stage without colorful scarves and makeup.

It's been over a month now since we last heard this voice. Go back now and measure it against some of the others you hear on the radio. He was really good, no, extraordinary. Don't get caught up in the drama, his voice was exceptional, particularly for his range. Luther,as smooth as he was, lost some of that range in his later years.

I am SO SICK AND TIRED of them labling ever obese black man that can sing "the next Luther Vandross." They said the same bullshit about Ruben Studdard. Jacob Lusk is a CHURCH SINGER who happened to make it through to American Idol. I've never really cared for his voice and I've screamed that from day one. I was done with him when he fell out crying and acting a DAMN FOOL during Hollywood week. I knew that big ole QUEEN wouldn't make it til the end. There is only ONE Luther Vandross, PERIOD!!

@the44118 Jacob Lusk IS talented I agree. HOWEVER, he is in dire need of vocal training. Here are a few of my problems with his vocals...1) He tends to sing really sharp and sometimes off. 2) He lacks voice control - lots of sloppy runs 3) He OVER SINGS every note. 4) His natural vabratto is very shakey 5) He sings from the back of this throat, opposed to his diaphragm.
Jacob had become increasingly over confident and extremely annoying as the season progressed, so YES my "diss" is justified!

@the44118 Do you even even know where your diaphragm is located in your body?? Pushing air from your diaphragm help to give your note power and it helps you to substain long notes. Incorrect breathing and singing from the back of your throat can eventually cause damage to your vocal cords, and constant hoarsness.
Trust me, there's NOTHING "new aged" about learning to sing correctly. That's like saying to someone.."Nawh, you don't have to chew your food first. Just swallow it whole. - SMH

Jacob Lusk's voice shakes badly because he has poor control over his vibratto, probably due to the pure emotion he puts into his songs. While in most cases this is beneficial, there are some drawbacks. He didn't win because Jacob appeals to a very specific group of people. Nobody in their right mind can deny his talent, but I for one think there were better contestants than him. Jacob Lusk DOES have a contract.

I think he is "great for some songs"; I too have heard him sound just awful on some things, yet, for this song, it was the best version I ever heard (just my taste). But after this one, he could never really capture the magic again, and I think that is why he has not gone too far.

his vocal acrobatics is perfect...it's like going round and round climbing from one octave higher or lower...I love his vibrato...it's almost perfect...his only problem is his stage presence sometimes especially with his dancing with no air song.

Also, I think sometimes really young kids know how to text, and old farts like me phone and vote once--text people hit it 100 times--and phone line problems. A few years back, Jordon Sparks beat Melinda Doolittle, but thought that was the youth vote that did the text thing and maybe why she won..

I've watched Idol for 9 years. Jacob neither had the charisma nor the breath of great song choices to win the title, but this song alone (minus the up tempo portions of the song) was one of the best by far. In fact, I'd say he outdid Luther on this song to tell you the truth.

Whenever Idol makes them pick from some list of songs that they think has some theme, rather than letting the artist pick completely on their own, they get stuck singing something they would never sing in real life and don't do as good a job as here with "God Bless the Child" and "House/Home". Scotty has no range, can't sing loud and is counting on his eyebrow twitches to get him to No. 1. Cute but not No. 1 material.

I was constantly waiting for him to take up an Earth Wind & Fire Ballad, and it kills me that we didn't get to hear one from him
this was one of his only classy performances (nothing that came after had that at all) but he had complete classiness just waiting to shine
