I had a similar thing happen in my MSX version of Gauntlet: You would play as character no.2, it'd be a green barcode shooting invisible shots, and I think it would have the "stats" of a randrom character.

I placed my Super Mario Bros 2 cartridge wrong and all the sprites were fucked up a bit. It was funny but I just reset it and put it in right..
