  • i grewed up in mt. clemens, the mich. just south of were they came from near the grand truk railroad tracks were they got there name

  • CON TODO CARIÑO A TI JENNY.

GRUPO QUE FUE TU FAVORITA EN LA EPOCA DE PREPA.

    SALUDOS.

  • I saw them live at the Tanz Haus in Acme, Michigan near Traverse City back in 1969.

  • no tattoos, I like that

  • Used to jam to this album on 8track tape in my car back in the day, never saw them live but man are they tight, this is one of their best tunes ever..........

  • grand funk young and restless!

  • damn killer bass

  • What amps are they using?

  • @sabbathmc97 I Believe they were using WEST amps, similiar to the SUNN or AMPEG amps of the day.

  • @sabbathmc97

    The old West Tube Amps.

  • one of the best, power trio's, of the time...

  • the bass is sayin..brrrrrrrrrrrrrr..its so frosty:)

  • Mark Farner was like an American Steve Winwood.

  • the music and writing was so powerful and incisive for 70's hard rock. Nixon, Viet Nam and the Draft and Hippies at home is reflected through out the music. talk about your teen angst!! Fucking Great stuff!!!

  • @yusefhasish ... Thanks for your comment & Long Live Solidarność !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best GFR song I guess it is "People, Let's Stop The War" and it is the best because of its amazing powerful bass line ! ... and me , well ... me , I'm a bass player (lol)

  • This clip always starts me before going to work :)))

  • What is really disappointing is the number of people that think of "American Band" when they think of GFR, and have never even heard of Inside Looking Out. Philistines.

  • Grand Funk Railroad is what I consider the epitome of what Rock and Roll is supposed to be -- a three piece garage band that went on to be the most popular band in the world. They were simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us Funk Fans who remember, NOTHING CAN REPLACE IT!!

    That is rock and roll.

The sad part is The Hall of Fame has no idea what I'm even saying.

  • @PackedFunk

I grew up with this music and I still LOVE IT - this started it all for all the young punks today. If it was not for this Band and others during that era we would not have what we have today. However - some of them are garbage LIKE BEIBER STUFF - YECH!

  • I can hardly go 1 day without playing this song at least once.

  • I was first introduced to GFR in 1978 (Im 47 now) and I remember finding a box of 8track tapes that had several of their releases in it, Simply blew my mind from the first time I heard 'I am your captain' and 'Paranoid' as well as this track. Every album they released had hit songs on EVERY track!! not many bands can you say that about.........just great quality Rock N Roll ........ Cheers

  • purdy right on there :o) ~

  • Alphakenny that's not true for all bands out there. There are many that do it for the real reason. Maybe stop listening to the radio and tv and find a band that you really enjoy. They are out there trust me. But in the main stream of things there are few

  • Una de las bandas mas resistidas y que para mi fue de las mejores. Este video lo demuestra, con la facilidad para interpretar y hacer muy buenn rock,...de lo mejor

  • My god I had forgotton how bad and harsh those old 60s era fuzz boxes sounded. He'd sound better if he turned it off, or just got a Marshall head.

  • Man do I miss bands like this. Vocals, instruments and hard core passion to make the music. No props or "T" and "A" to sell the music like they need today with these marginal or no talent "musicians." Glad I have lived in this time of real music and hard rock.

  • I loved this song sooooo much when it came out. On Time was the 1st album I ever bought.

  • Damn... I just realized that i don't know half of the good bands from rock'nroll... how the fuck could i waste all the 19 years of my life without knowing about this band??... Damn

  • packed funk: you are so right, nothing can replace this. I became a fan while in Vietnam in 1970. I got away from it in the 80's but came back in the 90's and haven't left . I blare this stuff from my car window and have all the weenies wondering who the crazy old man is.

  • @holmes432 their wikipedia says they are *shrug* nothing to get upset over.

  • @maraphernalia and we all know what wikipedia consist of

  • never heard this before...thanks for posting it

  • la magia de los 70,en cuanto a musica

  • @Apacheskull they are in the rock and roll hall of fame.

  • @maraphernalia They AREN"T in the HOF!

  • I was favorite this tune, when I was 15!

  • I still play these riffs when I solo

  • I need more cowbell!!!

  • What interesting is that the Rock n' Roll hall of Shame continues to ignore GFR but yet Mark Farner's messenger guitar was on display there, for a while. I'm not sure if it's still there though.

  • Wow now thats Rock n Roll, and cool Affro drumer

  • LOVE THIS - MY KITCHEN IS SHAKING!!!!!! CHAIR DANCING

  • I will not visit the so-called Rock n Roll hall of fame (the lower case is deliberate as the selectors for the same are ASSHOLES) until the following are inducted: Grand Funk, Yes, Rush, Rory Gallagher, Poco and Joe Jackson. Please tell us all why these very deserving persons are not in the hall???????????

  • oh my this is 1969 so great 40 years later Justin Bieber so sad

  • DAM!

  • Man! Were they good live!

  • Atop bar band who should have went further in the music world very artistic and full of good times

  • This sure brings back some good memories of the 70's.I was in the US Navy and went to a Grand Funk concert with a couple shipmates while stationed in Norfolk,Virginia.Mark's hair was much longer and swayed with his body movements as he played the guitar.I will never forget how cool of a concert that was....totally enjoyed every minute of it.We all were singing the songs of that concert for several weeks after in the GTO that I was driving.Too bad the band broke up,I'd love to see them againPEACE

  • Missed a lot of Hash School listening to THE FUNK!!

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST PART!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    4:30

  • HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEN PLAY ON!

  • @sirwob Dude... Knight was their manager from the start. They got tired of his bullshit and walked out on him. They also left a contract 3 months early, so the bastard sued them. That was in '72 or '73. Then they did American Band, Shinin' On, All the Girls, etc.

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST PART!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    4:30

  • When was the last time anyone heard guitar like this - I know !! I have not heard this in a LONG LONG TIME!!!

  • Now this is REAL MUSIC now matter what AGE!!

  • I think this is whats lacking todays music; the ablitity to not only reproduce the achievements from the studio but also to pack it into an amazing performance that is way more powerful and energetic than the studio track.

I know nobody cares that Im "only" 18 years old, but comparing todays ideal of generic beats to this I wonder what is missing today. Or rather what is involved too much in todays music.

  • Saw a band called Superstack do this as an encore and they effin' nailed it. Wouldn't think it was possible but the vox, guitar tones, drums...everything was bang on. Rock n' roll is still alive and well, just gotta get out there and put you ear to the ground, it ain't all on YouTube... :)

  • Comment removed

  • so tell me...does anyone wana argue that michigan is the undisputed rock N roll capital of the world???......i didn't think so, hehe...long live the funk...long live the railroad!!! :)

  • @jimmythecreep it did spawn some greats like Ted Nugent, GFR, Mitch Ryder, SRC, and of course, the MC5 - who really kicked out the jams

  • I'd say without a doubt, MARK, DON & MEL are one of THE TOP FIVE bands for getting on stage, and just hammerin out SOLID tunes.

  • ya gotta love the perm on the drummer !

  • Rock and Roll Hall of Shame what are you thinking?? An incredible 3 man Rock and Roll band!! THE TIME IS NOW!!! Grand Funk still rules today 40 years later-that says it all!!

  • That was unbelievable!

  • I never get tired of this video!!

  • HEY I KINDA LIKE THIS NEW BAND GRAND FUNK. I CANT FIND ANY TICETS ON TICKETMASTER. WHERE DO THEY TOUR???????

  • THE FIRST IN CONCERT SHOW ON ABC 71 GRAND FUNK LUVED EM

  • These 104 dislikers ....Someone must teach them what Rock Music IS!!

  • headbanging about 3.37! hell yes

  • Saw GFR three times back in the 70s. They were loud, hard, and fast. I loved it.

  • Very Powerful..WOW!!!! Thanks for the post!

  • I've noticed that when I watch and listen to these 70's rock groups that they have more rhythm and soul than any other kind music that i can think of. They put a lot into every song for fun and not cash, I can tell that they all feel it and are genuinely having a good time. It doesn't matter what kind of music it is today, it sounds and feels like they want money.

  • @alphakenny1up because the music was that much closer to the black man they stole it from. Makes sense.

  • @gumborific No one ever stole anything from the black man, because he never invented anything.

  • @alphakenny1up peanut butter.

  • @alphakenny1up Agreed, there is something lacking in most of todays music....heart and soul and genuine feeling.

  • Se liga no som dos caras, som de quem toca muito;não como os bostas de hoje com ajuda de computador e tudo mais só fazem mérda!!!!

  • I feel like i'v watched this 3,380,203 times, its fuckin nuts!!!

  • Ass WOOPING Bassist! Can anyone guess what the strings he's using are? I'm trying to get the same sound out of my jazz bass. They look like a set of black flat wounds to me. If you think you know please tell me!

  • Great song great band....love Don's screams and shouts....really adds some intensity to the performance!

  • Geeze I had no idea this band did not make it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What a tragedy. You have to wonder what morons decide who makes it and who don't. I guess taste is in your mouth for some.

  • @picnut56 They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ..... unfortunately crap bands like U2 and Nickleback will have a better chance.

  • Grand Funk was the ultimate garage band. Being a former Michigander myself, I lived not to far from where this band originated. Go through Michigan and you can see railroad bridges owned by Grand Trunk Railroad, altered to read Grand Funk Railroad. I'm just making an observation, wasn't me. HeHeHe!!!

PackedFunk said everything I was meaning to say. Thanks for saving me the time.

  • So Wild!

  • TYVM! LOVE IT....PEACE

  • I was 7 years old when I saw this and immediately knew what I wanted to do with my life! Play rock guitar and sing!

  • EYN - IM INSIDE LOOKING OUT AND OH HOW I DO NEED YOU!! IM COMING HOME!!

    DON'T LEAVE ME!!

  • The only band to have a round album jacet with silver foil embossment, looked like a giant coin! The one record that U dropped when carrying a big stack. ZZ TOP wasn't the only trio that ROCKED with soul. Bring out the noise, they done brought the funk, long ago

  • 103 that were dropped on their heads at birth. Anyone remember 3 songs for a quarter in the jukebox?

  • I guess there are, as of this writing, 103 Bieber/Gaga fans that have no respect for their roots. If I find one of them I will stone them.

  • someone PLZ make 5:09 a GIF!!

  • Meere asalaina magaalura!

  • Maybe the most kick-ass band ever. Saw them in '69 in St. Louis opening for Zeppelin. The were pretty much unknown as Bob Seger and Ted Nugent ruled the Midwest then. When they hit the stage at full throttle with the wall of amps, a shirtless long-haired Farner and Brewer's sonic drumming WOW!! IT was like nothing we had seen before. As was commented before they did embarrass and kicked Zep's ass big time .I'm sure Page and Plant were shittin" bricks off stage watching GFR lay it down.

  • sometimes i forget how good popular music used to sound before it completely detached itself from the blues....

  • thanks, Simpsons

  • 103 dislikes? They must have shit in their ears and brains of mush!!!!!

  • Farner claims to have built it himself from different pieces of different guitars

  • That's an unusual looking guitar Mark is playing. Does anyone know what that is?

  • @tomcaroscio

    Musicraft Messenger

  • @PackedFunk isnt it an eastwood messenger?

  • @tomcaroscio He has the openings duct tapped close so it does not feed back... he also has a "The Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Tone" installed in the guitar. He could reach down and hit the toggle switch to turn it on during a lead. Here is a link to a hole webpage about that guitar:

  • @tomcaroscio they removed the link, just search for "mark-farners-most-famous-messenger" and it will come up...

  • @tomcaroscio

Its a Messenger Guitar see the Mark Farner series (9 of 9) for more details on it.

  • @tomcaroscio

In the 1960s and 1970s, Farner played a Messenger guitar, which had an aluminum neck that ran through the body. Because it was a semi-hollow body guitar, he had to stuff rags in it to keep it from feeding back. He then used masking tape to cover the rags in the F holes. This guitar had a built in fuzz tone circuit which is what gave Mark his unique sound during that time.

  • I loved their live album, when i was a young teen. Especially TNUC and this one. But they lost their edge when they started singing pop. Still listened to 'em though. But, the long themed songs disaappeared. The guitar solo in this video is one of the greatest. Da,da,datadatada.

  • I saw them at the Boston Garden in 1970-Hells Angels were there-along with BBKng-Freddie King and Albert King---Go figure---But they were incredible--they'll put most of today's bands to shame..

  • ITA with the majority of the comments here. Never forget hearing this song, standing @ a party....everyone would stop...stomp their foot in sync. Yeah you guys get it! GFR the best !

How could you not love the electricity , whether live or airplay!!! Just three guys playing good rock music.

  • so simple ........so Fantastic performance !! ROCK on

  • Me and 3 friends snuck into a GFR new years eve concert at the Las Vegas convention center if i remember right it was 1973 we ate some ludes (Rorer 714s) somked Panama Red with the Babes. One of the Highlights of my teens .. GFR ruled the late 60s early 70s ..long live their music

  • total-was that me or did i forget

  • The rock & roll hall of shame has not a clue what rock & roll is. Rock & roll is just that. not R&B, disco, rap, hip hop, soul or anything like that it's rock & roll. Bands that should be in there aren't, BOC, Uriah Heep, Nazareth, Deep Purple, UFO.......on and on.

  • I'd love to see someone try & do a cover on this song.

  • @ Packed Funk. My brother sent this link to me. Thank you so much for uploading this to YT. Mark Farner was one of my earliest crushes: long hair, farm boy from Michigan - great music. I agree with your comments. Rock N Roll Hall of Fame makes me feel so frustrated with so many of their decisions.

  • @PackedFunk i agree..today bands are all so wrapped up in image and hairstyles that they forget about the music!..huh?..they lack any trace of soul because they focus on trying to be popular instead of just doing what they say they love to do!..i say..a shift in focus, and we might get some ppl actually creating something they 'feel'

  • @PackedFunk Let's forget about the socalled rock'n'roll hall of fame.I've never considered Beastie boys "rock",somehow they are enshrined. What a joke.Grand Funk Railroad contributed plenty in their time to satisfy my rock'n'roll soul.

  • @PackedFunk well said

  • @PackedFunk IN THAT YEAR I HAD 10 ,WHAT DO YOU THINK? IN CUBA

  • @PackedFunk You are so f--ckin right! Hall of Shame if you ask me. 40 years later and still great music-that says it all!!

  • Eu escuto essa musica toda vez que eu estou bebado!!!!!!!!! hasuahsuahsua

conheco a banda muito melhor que muito americano que escreve aqui!!!!!!

estou escrevendo em portugues porque e minha lingua!!!!!!! but I speak english!!!!!!!!!

  • for thwe radio lux we was there I found it on a mid watch say nomore was usin gv radio stuff to listen dont kikk me still did my jobwas cool

  • The most commercially successful band in the world from '69-'76 was Grand Funk Railroad.

The first American Band to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums was GFRxR.

Love them or hate them, this band was a force in the early seventies.

The unique thing about this is it was acomplished largely without radio airplay.

  • @PackedFunk sorry but, I find I must disagree w/you, Grand Funk was hot til Terry Knight forced himself in (so they could avoid bankruptcy, he was not only their producer but, the money man) when he came in GFR went from FM (heartbreaker, inside looking out) to (AM) we're an American band, Locomotion, another fine example of money corrupting great R&R

  • we could not go to france, because they might kidnap us an learn the us staratagy for defence of euorope. france had just pulled out of the nuclear defence shield of europe, aqnd many people were upset. my father had to mobilize his mash unit and hide in the black forest waiting for soviet tanks to come. they never came, but i remember the fear in his eyes

  • it wasa strange time. magical mystery tour went right past my house

  • on my grundig real to real in my closet, hear it the next day

  • i feel for the iron curtain peeps. scott stefahans, armed forces radio sowed me was music coujld be.opened every show with gold and silver from qms. my mother didn't approve so i had to play it on any radio and record it

  • love classic rock

  • @Doraelen Noting Like The 70's Best Time In My Life Never To Be Seen Again. Love Old Tube Amp Sound Its Great. Carry On Mark Don Mel !!!!!!!!

  • I'm 48...and still wow!

  • This was a fuckin' rockin' band. No bands like this nowadays. I wish i was born back then, in golden era of rock music.

  • @sinisab89 SUPER TALENT, we need to text , call . email all radio stations and the rock hall of fame anget this GREAT BAND inducted NOW befor blink 182 or J . Bieber getsin !!

  • o sheet ! This is F I R E !

  • God I love his voice in this song!

  • Mark Farner is loaded with talent!! a garage band, 3 guys, pouring it all out!!!

  • One Word....AWESOME!

  • There is literally no one in Rock--before or since--whom Mel Schacher could NOT TOTALLY SCHOOL in how to play "lead" bass!

  • @MajorCaliber Boy, you got that rigtht! When I listen to there 1970 live LP, you can plainly see its true.

  • Good interpretation of The Animals 1966 hit.

  • I've got to say it again: This video kicks ass!

  • From a time when ROCK music was played by MEN with BALLS!

  • 1969♥ Such a fine time♥

  • GFR lives maaaan!:-D

  • This song jams babbyyy! Yaeaaah¡

  • one word only here..**COOL**

  • 5:00

    Commence Intense Swag

  • Used to cruise in my Firebird, lit a joint, sit back and crank out Grand Funk! Woke up once in a ditch, facing the direction I was coming from but the Funk was still cranking!

  • If a man is asleep and he falls from his bed. He will wake up when he hits the ground.

But when a man dreams that he is falling it is not the man for he is asleep is his bed.

Then who is this that is falling. And can they wake up with out hitting the ground.?

Jesus told you to save your life is to lose it and to lose it is to save it. YOU got woke up by the one who was asleep in the bed. He saved your life.

  • recorded this for free on my concord cassette recorder(made in japan) ,no question about it.bad ass

  • Kick them drums ass.

  • Bad Ass no question about it, This is my GENERATION

  • pink floyd played backup to GFR in 1970

  • bad fucking ass funk bringing it!

  • Comment removed

  • My alll time favorite, even in the garden of endan takes back seat to this, heard that iron butter fly came in stoned when they changed the lyrics.

  • I still think music back then was better than music now

they actually put so much fucking passion into music instead of now

  • WONDERFUL GRAN FUNK

  • Гранд Фънк е епоха в музиката !

  • EPIC SYNCHRONIZED GUITAR COCK THRUSTS 4:30

  • Ladies...and especially you beautiful ladies and proper gentlemen:

    GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!!!

  • We used to listen to Grandfunk through radio Free Europe 'cause we were behind the Iron Courtain in East Europe (Romania) at that time. They were for us the symbols of TOTALLY FREEDOM,which not sure we ever achieved..We even self made and worn waistcoats from wool - same as Mark wears in this clip - shocking at noon the passers-by in our home town.Grandfunk Railroad gave us undescriptible strength and faith to bear day by day the diabolic system of Ceausescu from where we finally escaped !!!

  • @allegrobarbaro63 : It was same for my cousins in Poland. LONG LIVE FREE EXPRESSION !

  • There should be a movie about these guys.....comin out of a garage into the spotlight without much airplay early on. With there manager screwing them over. The things they faced when they were so very young. It just would make a good movie.

  • I was a big fan of GFR and being 53 years old I was around to hear them and SEE THEM live! They rocked it out for sure. By the way the whole audience was always pretty fucked up.

  • Well, I am not really sure about Meil clothes in the other video, but Mark for sure was without shirt.

  • I saw another video of this song. I think the other one is better performed and in another tv channel. I have been looking for it but not luck. Of course this one is great but I think Mark voice is better in the other one. Meil was in Yellow and Mark without shirt. GREAT SONG.

  • How good is the LP Closer to Home?

  • These guys were much better than given credit for. Yes, a lot of hype and they hung around too long -- earning a living. :) But put a lot of great music out there. They are and were an original that was never duplicated by anyone else.

  • Ahh the good old days , when a "nickle " could get you a whole bag.

  • @SteveSkn A lid (ounce) was 20$ and a quarter ounce 5$ which was called a 'nickel bag'.

Yeah it was fun watching this early GFR. They were a bit of a joke back then, but this video shows their act had bravery - i mean just three guys with no sound effects. It's fun to see people believe in themselves in such an outsized way. That drummer cranked it out. It sounds like what you'd think Flint Michigan would sound like on a weekend - drinking beer and hangin out back in '70.

  • @NowPleaseReadThis An oz. was 40.$ a quarter was 10.$ a nickle bag was 1 eighth , about 7 joints ,,, and lids were 30.$ bags.
