y'know, i never thought i would like billy joel when my mother asked for the album, but we were on a trip to see relatives and she put the cd in and i thought to myself, "oh my god im gonna die", but i actually really liked it, i never thought it was a type of music i would be into

I started my music collection as a 8yr. old. An aunt & uncle a few yrs. older, really contributed to that. We're talking mid-70's...they were awesome Singer/Songwriters! My collection started with Daddys 8tracks. Brand new blue record player and some 45's, I giggle thinkin bout it. : ) Elton John, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Carly Simon OMG nuff said. Best part, they just get better with age! Blows my mind...God I LOVE MUSIC!

CBS, on the other hand, had a recording division as profitable and prolific as their television network. You'll need a major city-sized phone book to list every album and single on the Columbia label alone!

Right I'm really confused. The original cut can be listened to on YouTube and it is in the same key as this live rendition. If his voice is too high on that album then so is the backing track, so all of it should be played faster and in a higher key. But his voice does sound higher, like a chipmunk as BJ puts it, so there is clearly something wrong with the original album release. Can anyone shed any light on this one?

Bill Joel is a perfect example of a gifted, phenomenally talented individual musician. Unfortunately, the majority of mainstream musicianship today consists of writers writing for vocalists with a polished aesthetic and good PR rather than being a talented, original songwriter/musician. The term 'play what you write' doesn't seem to exist in the same way as it did in Billy Joels era.

Aervane: I think that first chord is a D7 which is extremely common and COULD be the opening chord of 'Let It Be' but the second chord is not. Yes, Billy screws around on the piano a lot, including during his live shows. And yes, he is a huge Beatles fan. the original recording is messed up because the album "Cold Spring Harbor" was sped up.....the re-release in the 80's tried to fix some things but it still sounds funky.....this version is amazing.
