URUGUAY STIL THE BEAST IN MY HERAT I LIVE IN AUSTRALIA, AND AUSTRALIA WAS LUCKY IN THIS GAME BUT DESERVE TO WIN DOSENT BREAK MMY HEART BECAUSE MY HEART IS A CHAMPION NO MATTERS WAHTA CHAMPIONNNNN THATS MY COUNTRY 3 MILLON PEOPLE AND CHAMPIONNNNN
I was there....watching it on tv in my room. The moment John Aloisi kicked it into the net I jumped up and down on the bed, I had to get a pillow to cover my face because I was shouting so loudly (in happiness of course). A defining moment in Australian sports history, my personal favorite of course.
The US held the America's Cup for 132 years & in 1984 The Racing Yacht 'Australia 2' owned by Alan Bond of Western Oz won the cup. It was headline news all over the world & when it happened it was 7am & people were dancing in the streets. It was one of the biggest party days Australia has ever experienced. Even though it was an amazing moment this qualifyer win was not winning the actual FIFA World Cup. When the Socceroos win the World Cup then it will be the biggest moment in Australian Sport.
yeh but i judge it on a world scale. no one other than a hand full of countries would know about the americas cup, also how many people do you know that even own a yacht. no we didnt win the world cup but im sure qaulifying for the world cup meant a lot more to aussies than a yacht race.
Yes, the America's Cup means a lot to Australian society. Every young boy and girl from all walks of life, no matter how poor or uneducated, are always on the backstreets racing yachts and drinking champagne, until their mother's call them in for dinner, and Dad tells them again of the magical story of The WInged Keel. Yes, yacht racing, the most humble and egalitarian of all sports, truly unites us all.
Australia got cheated out of the World Cup. I don't think it's a coincidence that the last time Italy won the World Cup, they happened to have had match-fixing scandals that very same year. What a bullshit penalty that was against Lucas Neill. And we fuckin should've won the Final. Allez Les Bleus.
for fucks sake, how can you compare the stupid americas cup and that overated cathy freeman race to this. i mean how many people would you know that actually own a yacht and cathy freeman was always going to win by a mile. this is special and any one who disagrees would be a redneck bogan who likes that other shit sport called 'cricket'
ok yatch race would have been big still nothing compared to how many people were on the streets for this match, but cathy ahhahaha comeon thats a joke
how can you compare the americas cup(stupid yacht race no one even cares about) and cathy freemans (100% going to win race) at the olympics to the game against uruguay. there is no comparison, nothing can ever come close to this game. all you football haters wake up.
I got amazed over the massive party on the streets made by aussies.....3rd most popular sport in Australia grabbed huge popular attention in order to see Socceroos again in a World Cup after 32 years....with lots of aussies playing around the globe they finally deserved to qualify for the soccer major competition after many frustated attempts throughout 3 decades.....pity they were ripped off against Italy later....
I didn'tknow australians lived football (or soccer) in such an intense way....i thought you only enjoyed rugby and australian football....that makes me even more glad that you classified to the WC....besides....uruguay is not a very loved team here in south america
We do enjoy it, there is a large cult following of the game here, the onyl reason its not mainstream is because the media is controlled by people who hold interests in our other sports like rugby and australian rules, and they continually brainwash people against the wonderful game of football. The reason being that they see it as a threat to those sports that no one else in the world takes seriously.
The tide will definately turn and become a tsunami if we win the right to host in 2018 or 2022. If we do win the right it must be said that Australian sport will never be the same and football will become the foremost of the codes here in Oz. Now all we have to do is win the right to host. Just the prospect of having the World Cup Finals in Australia is so freakin' exciting. C'mon Australia!!!!!!
Are there any concrete plans for an Australian bid for the 2022 WC? Here in Germany we hear a lot of rumours. I would definitely love to see the WC down under.
btw I think 2018 is not realistic cause after South Africa 2010 and Brasil 2014 the WC will come back to Europe (probably England)

True, but more people danced and partied on the street than they did when Australia 2 won the yacht race.

Your wrong. Football (Soccer) Is the most played sport in Australia. Followed by Netball then AFL.
ConnexTrains 4 years ago
the most played recreationally yes, but it would rank far behind Aussie Rules, Cricket, Rugby League and maybe even Rugby Union as most popular.
Football is my favourite sport by far, in fact I was at this match, but even the FFA don't avoid these facts.
