La llorona is the spectre of a woman who had children out of wedlock with a married man. When she found out that this guy didn´t want the kids she drowned them and out of guilt she killed herself.

Now her spectre walks crying for her children (hence the name la llorona the weeping woman) places that are close to bodies of water (rivers, creeks and so on.) lookinf for children to drown and take with her. This is the short version.
