His is the most intelligent voice that there ever was in western television. He made it an art form. The equivalents in Britain were perhaps Roald dahl and Dennis Potter. Oh and I wish you had let the cigarette fall to the ground Rod!
Rod Serling is one of my heroes♥ He was so talented and inspiring, and intellegent, and he could scare you and make you think at the same time! I wish he hadn't smoked though :( It hurts me to see him smoke and drink like this. Did I mention he's a total hottie!? :') R.I.P. Rod we love you♥
For extra money during college, Serling took a part-time job testing parachutes for the Army Air Force. According to co-workers, he got $50 for each successful jump. They recall Serling's telling them that he once got $500, half before and half if he survived, for a hazardous test. His last test jump took place just before his wedding. He was paid $1000 to test a newly invented jet ejection seat. Serling survived, but barely. He said later that 3 other men had been killed before he tried.
@snidelywhiplash You are incorrect. It had 5 seasons. Many of the most popular episodes are in season 5. One of the favorites "He's Alive" is in season 4.
OMG Rod Serling is like my hero.. i love his movies. he was kick ass writer/producer. the other day i was watching Chris Weitz and I thought wow he looks a lot like Rod Serling. OMG thats weird.
Funny how he was thinking that 1998 was going to be so "futuristic" back then. 28 years later came and went and not much has changed....besides cellphone and the Net. And fashions and hair! LOL
I wish he would have quit smoking long before this. All those years of smoking are what more than likely caused him to have all his vascular problems which wound up in the surgery that he died from.
@tall32guy Yes i guess; My uncle also recently died from cancer even if he had stopped smoking a few years ago.He died three weeks ago.Smoking causes vascular problems.
I remember dreaming that I was Rod Serling. I mean, I was watching Rod Serling, but at the same time I was Rod Serling. And I was thinking, "I need to find some teleplay-writers; trouble is, no one does that anymore except Jodie Foster." Then I walked into a sort of Quonset hut where shadowy people wound among antique cheval mirrors, tapestries, mahogany furniture--expensive stuff.
A woman who resembled my Aunt Cathy--similar dark, shoulder-length hair--sat at a table near the entrance. "Do you have any teleplay-writers?" I asked her. "Hmm," she said. "We've got Jodie Foster in a booth at the back, but that's about it."
@snidelywhiplash Yes i read that he died young at only 50 years old.Smoking is bad and i think but,it is my opinion that he was a tormented man.I just guess he suffered a lot in childhood or as a young man.You can read a sort of distress on him.A genius but a tormented genius.
At the end of the day Serling is untouchable, part of history and every bit ingrained in cinema and the pop culture lexicon for both his unique, charismatic personae as his talent. This interview just proves the man behind it all, bad habits and opinions and all.
Re his addiction to nicotine, I'm certain he knew about the hazards! Come on, he's Rod Serling. I see it as him knowing death comes to all, so why not do what you love and get on with it. In life it's not the length, it's the width, as they say! And boy, did he have the latter. People are so fixated on how 'long' we live. Quality not quantity. Making your mark in the world should be enough. RIP, Mr. Serling, aka (imho) GOD!
Rod Serling was so brilliant and so far ahead of his time.
With Twilight Zone and Star Trek, the sixties produced the two best sci-fi dramas ever, and there is such depth and poignancy in the writing of both those shows --- it's amazing.
Rod Serling is way too humble and underestimates his own talents. He is very low profile and very personable, and likeable, and has all the best of the best elements an admirer could ever dream for. Rod is the best and the most talented.
Rod Serling is part of that nostalgia for 1960s and 1970s material. The writing is great and the technology was much more limited in those days. Today the technology has advanced but the writing seems lacking. Perhaps, so much of the great stories have already been written.
You are the passengers on a most uncommon elevator about to take the strangest journey of your lives. Your destination unknown but this much is clear a reservation has been made in your name for an extended stay. Wave goodbye to the real world you've just entered the twilight zone. What happened here to dim the lights of hollywood's brightest showplace is about to unfold once again.... ...this time the doors are opening for you.
I noticed that Serling says Twilight Zone ran from 1959 to 1962, but it really ran from 1959 to 1964. His involvement with the show diminished after 1962, although he continued to host the show and provide scripts. Also, the Desilu Playhouse showing of "The Time Element" was in 1958, not 1956.
Genius but geez - he's only 45 here. He looks 10 yrs older. He died at 50 only 5 yrs after this interview. Heavy smoker, drinker and worker. All 3 will kill ya.
5:45 Serling nails TV & political correctness 40 yrs ago even today! Watch any TV ad 2010 & no matter what the product it will have all races of people (which is fine & happy in TV universe) but nowadays every ad I see has a level of stupidity. white male-dumbest, white woman-smartest, black male-smarter than those 2, black woman-wins because she's going to save the world! Also, only evil whitey guys break into Brinks security homes to attack Mom's & little girls. It's the rules folks.
Dang it Rod! Put the cigarettes away! You of all people should be able to see your future. (p.s. I have no prob with cigarette smokers, I just hate that they took this genius away from our universe. Big hero of my lifetime.
Unlimited energy sources are out there! But the big oil corporations don't want that technology revealed,Get the blueprints for a free energy motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,take part in the revolution!
And that is the most telling element of Mr. Serlings interview here. Mr. Gunn is obviously incapable of encountering Mr. Serling's brilliance, though I appreciate his effort and appreciate the banter between them. Mr. Serling is a god figure to science fiction, to early cinema and explorations of such stories. He is an aficianodo, a johnny-come-lately, but his direction is clearly leaps and bounds above "that which is shootable, which is tellable".
A DVD set of James Gunn's Science Fiction in Literature film series is available for sale through the KU Center for the Study of Science Fiction. The set excludes the Rod Serling interview since it was never completed and when I talked with James Gunn he said that the footage was only shown once in a network television tribute to Serling.
I saw a few of Gunn's other interviews when I took his Sci-Fi literature class at KU in the 1980s. I recall the Pohl Anderson interview, done outside if I recall, and a segment with Gordon Dickson and Harry Harrison where they agreed on camera to write a novel together and brainstormed the plot for the book "Lifeship". Dennis McClatchey did the camera work on some of these Gunn interviews.
He mentions that TZ ran from 1969 to 1962. How could he make such a mistake? The show ran until 1964. There is no way he could have short changed his own show by 2 years. This was only 1970. He must remember this? I wonder why he made such an error? Was it by choice?
Edward Rodman Serling, a man who not only fought to protect our country way of life in WWII, and took a fair amount of injury for it. But also fought censors twice as hard to make sure his vision was seen and heard, by all on this earth.
When TV was about the "Beaver" and "Donna Reed," he wanted to illuminate such as war, racism, anti-society, paranoia and other destructive elements that come from within us.
He was buried with full military honors. I hope television honors as well. All he wanted was to remembered as a writer.
Well.... I remember....

What a great gift and privilege it is to be able to see this interview. Though plagued with trauma from his war days and frustration from dealing with greedy manipulative producers, Rod Serling acted with the confidence of his innermost convictions and always strove to see and show truth in its many forms. He was an artist AND a professional. I'm glad he lived long enough to hear the name of his creation come to be used in daily spoken English. He was and always will be an American treasure.
This is fantastic. I love the fact that a lost interview with Rod Serling has resurfaced, after all these years. To call him a genius doesn't begin to explain what a great writer he was.
Serling died at age 50 from heart attacks possibly linked to his chain smoking. I heard in a documentary that his arteries fell apart the the surgeon's hands during bypass surgery.

In my opinion Serling is one of the greatest Sf witers of the Twentieth Century. In many ways he was an early New Wave writer, focussing more on allegory, psychology and satire of contemporary culture rather than the "spaceships and zap guns" of the old guard that he so admired. A great writer, and as a piece of television the Twilight Zone still hasn't been bettered.
I think Serling, by his own words (you'll have to give me pure faith o this- i know the quote but can't recite it verbatim) remarked that he used science fiction as a vehichle for getting social commentary via tv. in other words, sci fi was the best way to get his message across w/o censorship. either way, RS was the shit.
I'm pretty sure that James Gunn traveled to Serling's home or office for this interview, the other interviews in the series were shot the author's home locations, with the exception of a few that were shot at a conference. Other authors interviewed in the series are Issac Asimov, Pohl Anderson, James Campbell, Forest J. Ackermann and Harlen Ellison (who did visit KU).
