I think you guys are missing the point... It's really just a matter of a mathematical exercise of adding two positive numbers. The formula is simple: Great Song + (2 x great bands) = Fabulous Rendition!
Long live The Beach Boys and Long Live Status Quo!
Sad watching this knowing Carl Wilson would be diagnosed with lung cancer a year after this performance and would then die a year later (Dec 1998). He was the youngest of the Wilson brothers and sang in the beautiful high falsetto voice you hear on many of their hits.
He was also a really nice person and i can't remember ever seeing a negative comment about him on YouTube or anywhere on the web. He's at the end of the row (right).
@helenaZZZZirlandaise Brian Wilson sung the falsetto, not Carl. Carl sings more in a modal voice. There's a few songs with him in falsetto, "Heaven", but his falsetto sounds markedly different. Not bashing the guy, though. He had a heavenly voice, and it didn't really decline over the years, like Brian or Dennis' did.
Speaking of Carl, I simply added that Carl sang in the beautiful high falsetto voice you hear on many of their hits. How is this not true?
Correcting me with "Brian Wilson sung the falsetto, not Carl" is just not true. Brian sang falsetto on the earlier songs (Surfer Girl, In My Room, etc) but Carl - and sometimes Al - took over falsetto when he became ill, e.g. on Good Vibrations, California Girls, I Get Around, and so many more.
@helenaZZZZirlandaise That's blatantly untrue. Brian didn't mentally ill until 1966/1967, during the recording of the SMiLE sessions. And even then, he wrote and produced two more albums on which he sang, eg, Wild Honey and Friends.
Good Vibrations, California Girls, and I Get Around all date before that. The first one being from 1966, the second one from 1965, and the final one from 1964. Indeed, Al occasionally took over the falsetto in a live setting, most notably on In Concert.
@tehmaster690 And to follow up to that, neither Carl nor Al could reproduce the classic Brian falsetto perfectly, with all its range, tone, and uniqueness. After Friends, it's also a shame that Brian stopped singing as much as he did. The most notable example featuring it after this point would be 'Til I Die, where he alternates with Carl.
I'm glad you now accept Carl sang falsetto on so many BB songs after Brian's illness.
I guess I don't see it as a competition between them. I love Brian's falsetto. But Carl didn't need to try and live up to Brian's falsetto because he had his own unique and perfect style.
Carl developed an incredible falsetto of his own for sure, Such as on Surf's Up (1971 version) but Almost if not every falsetto part on BB's records from the beginning up til 1970 are Brian.
what's with the arguing. we're talking about a collaboration of titans here. their individual versions each had their flair. my opinion is the best one is the collaboration :D
i love this song so much!!!!!! :D :D

I agree DP...I prefer the Beach Boys' original version too. The Quo version is over-produced. Still a good cover version though!
