I saw this movie on TV, and it was creepy as fuck. I see nothing cute or redeeming about this thing! It was just freaking scary! I think Psychrotron has it backwards. The film is a rape survivor allegory. The kid is haunted by the distorted memories of his rape in the form of Gooby (hence why he's always screaming when he seems him).

Eugene Levy is trying to reach out and connect to him but the horrible mental trauma hanging over him constantly interferes his efforts to connect with the boy. In the end he fails, and the final boy handing off Gooby to another child, symbolising that he too will carry on the cycle of abuse

dude, me and my cousin were watching this and we just pretend the whole time that Gooby was smoking pot, and the dad's childhood house was Gooby's crack house...we were pretty drunk so it was fucking hilarious!! Also, we pretended that Gooby had a evil twin brother, named Roofie, and while the kid was dangling for his life, Gooby, the walking stoned vagina, was having a fight to the death with Roofie.
