I love how Lunny can pick with his whole wrist and arm and not move his body at all. His simple work with his instraments is masking his true talent with them! His voice is not often heard, but it is marvelous.
For those of yis who never noticed, this is rare as hen's teeth....the great Planxty crew — but with Lunny singing......fuckin' class or what? Like I said before: God be with the long-haired 70s!
I've heard the Lee Valley String Band (from Cork, like) do this song and their version was included on the "Bringing It All Back Home" CD in 1991. Never heard Planxty do it, though, so this was a real treat - thank you!
Thanks so much for all these videos. I still have the recording on the sky box hoping to put them on video, great series. Love this song since I heard it first on tv, I keep coming back to it. Thanks again!;)
Cool! Donal signing lead! It's great! A rare treat. Liam's whistle playing is really cool too - it fits in great with this Country music feel, in surprising contrast to his usual Irish traditional style. What magic it must have been to see this band live in the '70s!
I wonder why Lunny sings so rarely

It IS American. New Lost City Ramblers and many others recorded this in the early folk revival 20 years before this.

Right at the end they all share that look musicians share when they know it's been a classic performance.

Does anybody know about harmonica tuning Andy uses?
Does he use Paddy Richter or just standard Richter ones?

I heard that Donal used to do this song back in the day when he was with Emmet Spiceland. Might have got that wrong, though.

I remember this song from Ian & Sylvia back in my '60's youth...can't tell you which album but it was on an early one.

freddie white has formed a new band, which I heard on Bullmans, Summercove on 29/4, - marvelous!
