You know, your results may have been positive but I drive 60 +/- miles each day going to and from work and traffic conditions are fairly the same each day and 95% of my drive is on cruise control set at 60mph in a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria and I get a constant average of 26.8 mpg and 360 +/- miles a tank no mater witch fuel I use and take in to consideration I've taken data for over a year and one tank a week. So I say to anyone here do your own testing and see what works for your car.
Don't use higher octane you will experience knocking or a ping noise in your engine unless you have a bigger engine yes you will get better performance but later on you will regret buying a new car
@SuperTrevontay Higher octane is less volatile, so there is LESS of a chance it pings. In a low compression engine that needs low octane gas only, using high octane only retards the timing and creates an incomplete burn. It actually makes less power ("running smoother"). Low octane burns more quickly and makes more power, but in high compression engines it detonates and ignites itself, so you have to use higher octane gas to prevent "pinging".
@SuperTrevontay high octane will work in both, but in a low compression engine it will just make less power, and run slightly dirtier, but you might get better gas millage at highway speed in some (older) cars, though you will get better overall mileage overall with the recommended gas. You just cant use low test gas in a high compression engine, or you could damage it like you described.
I don't understand America, your regular gas has an octane rating of 87. Here in Australia our regular fuel has an octane of 91 and we have 2 others 95 premium and 98 premium I run 91 in my car and it preforms like crap but when I put 95 in it boy does it go well. The engine is a little C14NZ the motor is a 1980's design and she is averaging 5litres per 100km thats about 47mpg
We ran The Dinkmobile on grease last year but it was complicated and we were scared. It is a Citröen ZX, 1995, runs only on diesel but apparently grease, too. There are no automatic cars here in France, they are all manual, there is no resale possible for an automatic. They run on "gazole" here. The car is for sale, actually, but who would want to ship it out? They just go and go, people have them for 50 years or more, but wow, they are ugly, uncomfortable and no pleasure to drive. Yecch.
Here in Canada mid grade and low grade fuel contain ethanol, and it is dirty fuel which contains higher amounts of water. I use premium or high test and my fuel mileage is even better.
here in Az nissan has releasted the new nissan leaf in 2010 & chevy has the new chevy volt both are fully electric..however the volt has a gas generator on board to charge the batteries while driving yet get less miles per charge (40 miles) ..You can drive much farther than the leaf due to on board generator..The leaf limits you up to 100 miles per charge if driven in slower 45 to 55 mph traffic..The maintance on a electric is almost zero..( tires, brakes, wheel ball joins) no motor maint.
you may have gone further, or filled up later, but what are the MPG comparisons? To be a truely accurate comparison, you would have to figure out your AVerage mpg on the tank of regular fuel, and then compare than to the AVERAGE mpg with midgrade, (hopefully under the same driving conditions) Then you could accurately figure out if you actually saved any money.
@ArizonaPublic Good job didn't see those. The only thing you need now is the cost per mile with regular vs midgrade based on the varying mpg and fuel costs, the difference will be your savings, minus the extra 1.20 for the midgrade fuel. Then you can break down how much your actually saving per mile or 1,000 miles by using the more expensive fuel.
@NuggetsOfTruth - It is ugly but it keeps me under the radar. Police take one look at my car and say "No ticket for him, He probably can't even afford to pay the ticket with a car like that"
@ArizonaPublic Yep, one reason why I drive a 4 cylinder 2002 Focus around The Valley of the Sun. Keep it running sound, she runs like a top, gets good gas mileage, AC works, insurance is cheap for AZ, but I dont always fuss about washing it every weekend. BTW - nice little teaser from the Nearly Famous Barry Young, at the end of the video.
Octane ratings are a scam, look at when the pumps were inspected some states dont inspect them for over 3 years. You might be paying for one gallon and only be getting 9/10s of a gallon or you might be getting 87 instead of higher octane,
each car was designed to run on a certain octane run what your car was designed to run on.
hmmm i wonder why cars boast about 40mpg when my old geo metro i had in 1994 got well over that?
@cbr6864 Because cars these days, with the added protection, weight easily double if not triple what your Geo weighed. The older cars from the late 80's and early 90's got the best mileage because they weighed so much less.

@PRXSVR USA uses a different rating system. USA 87 is the same as your regular 91

Yep,I get the better miles per gallon also. I use the 91. Runs a lot smoother also.

the higher octane here in australia is about 10c a litre more. that is over 40c a gallon!
but i will try it any way

I run only 93 octane, and I get better gas mileage, and the engine runs smoother......JP.

I've tried this with my 2005 Ranger P/U, (2.3), and didn't really notice too much better MPG.
