There has been many flu viruses, but the swine flu came about just at the same time as the financial crisis, how uncanny that a flu that originated from one boy in Mexico can spread worldwide within weeks but in 2011 we hear no more about swine flu, the reason for that is it was created so the medical research funds wouldn't dry up due to people not donating money and Governments not providing funds for research. I have had a horrible day. My wife took our 9year old son (who has asthma) to the doctors for a regular flu jab and he is afraid of injections which is normal for his age, so the nurse made it as quick as possible to avoid the anxiety for him. If you examine the data, you will see that the rate of illnesses such as polio, smallpox were falling at the same rate prior to the introduction of vaccines.
