Out of your list, I would go for Shostakovich - the rest are too 'Romantic' - Mahler & Shostakovich ( and Bruch & Bruckner ( you missed them out !! )) had an edge - I live in a little village near Darlington, and no, I don't think I know your sister (yet!).
