@amenhop - This is my all time favorite Stones song and I'm very familiar with Gatemouth's music. Thanks for the upload. Excuse me but I had to giggle when I read... "I uploaded the Stones version hoping people would 'discover' a fine but relatively obscure track."Dude hahaha Gatemouth is obscure to a lot of people but The Rolling Stones and Exile On Main Street is not :)
this song makes me imagine myself driving a really old rusty pickup, rattling down the road through the desert, pouring sweat with a cigarette in my mouth and a bottle of whiskey in my hand.
IIIRC the house this was recorded at in France was a former Nazi SS headquarters and the wrought iron ventilator grates in the whole place had swastikas in the design, supposedly this inspired the writing of this song
i really wanna do a shot of whiskey with keith richards before i die for real that would be the best story to tell some1 well shit i did a shot with keith richards porb won't happen but fuck it i can hope right
@namey420 If it doesn't happen before you die, you can have yourself cremated, and your loved ones can send the ashes to him. He'll snort you up like he did to his dad. I'm just jokin' with you, btw - not tryin' to be an asshole. I'd like to drink with Keith, too - but I wouldn't stop at a shot, that's for sure.
@namey420 I think Keith Richards should go onto some charity show and have the highest bidder get to drink some whiskey with him. I think he would raise close to ten million dollars, if not more.
This was recorded at Keith's castle in France in the summer of "71,hot as hell. They set up in rooms for sound purposes that had no ventilation. That's where this song came from.Mick Taylor plays the opening chords. It's a masterpiece.
This song has a rather contrived sound, a "We wish we were badasses" forced sound.
This is one of those directionless songs that the (in those days) the tape kept rolling while the band reached but couldn't quite come up with something.
Of course, 1,000s of listens makes most believing that it's good.
You amuse. @Vanguard448 Yes, I scored the point on you. And you've confused trawling -- fishing for a fight -- with being a troll, who is someone who hangs on the same message board.
Oh how you amuse. Years upon years of bands that have come since the Stones reveal what shoddy musicians they are.
GTFO WITH YOUR "THUMBS DOWN" AND "DISLIKE BUTTON" COMMENTS! Fuckin' turds can't just enjoy the music without commenting on how anyone that doesn't like it sucks. Morons.
Read "Symphony For The Devil" and its description of the making of this great album, and I think you'll can't help but conclude that Jagger was a bit player.
I was in a small hut on Koh Samui in 1980s. Lots of mushrooms and things getting out of hand. This song coming onto me like a very heavy overcoat. I wrestled with it for hours, tossing turning, sometimes I thought it was going to consume me. It was climaxing as it did . Then spiralling back down. The lyrics took over.Don't fight it ! Don't fight it! I did and won......
Keef in an interview: "When I was a junkie, I still learned how to water ski, and I made Exile On Main Street." Winston Churchill would be proud. Mr. Richards was always the heart of this band -- Mick was just the pitchman. Oh, and Charlie Watts...GREATEST DRUMMER EVER.
From 1968 to 1974,this gloriously and seriously degenerate bunch produced some of the best music ever made.Nothing I've heard since touches what they were at this time.
40 years on, the Stones continue to amaze..For my money tho, Midnight Rambler is hands down the greatest R and R song of all time. Studio version, that is.Live version is like the Bobsey Twins on crack. Slithery, evil, machine-tool tight, first time I heard this song I literally had to pull over, hair on the back of my neck standing up. when it ended, I had to take a second to orient myself, where the F.. * was I? and 40 years on, I still play Midnight Rambler, the effect only slightly diminish
@tbloopner Had to laugh!...I heard this album when I was soo young and it has stuck with me all this time, chicago blues?...south london mate, white niggers thats where we came from, aint nothing changed just all grown older and sharper than ever..whole album is genius,go read keefs book life,it will fill in the gaps!!..so long yo dude.....got to scrape the shit right off my shoes!!
This is credited to Jagger/Richards/Mick Taylor. The only Stones song guitarist Mick Taylor received a writing credit for. One of the reasons Taylor left The Stones in 1974 was because his songwriting was not being credited, meaning he did not get royalties.
@dimiballas - <- I became interested in this song when I heard 'Gatemouth' do it (at a blues festival in Maryland) - in fact I was so impressed I bought the album for this track. I uploaded the Stones version hoping people would 'discover' a fine but relatively obscure track. I have to agree with you however, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's version is brilliant. Perhaps I should post it.
@Euphoria221 AMEN! Never heard this before and now I LOVE it. It definitely could be the opening theme to a crime show set in some dirty little town in the south like True Blood is. Good call.
hottequilabrownsugar: What do you have against Yoko? Is it something personal?
You apparently don't like "beautiful" women whose art closely resembles an enema-spewed toilet.
Additionally, her screaming on John Lennon's solo efforts sounded like a wolf with its balls snagged on a barbed wire fence. (Check Side 2 of "Life Peace in Toronto)
Seriously, I have friends in the SAS. They'll find the bastard and cut off his thumb.
Mick,Keith, and Mick Taylor have all said that this song was about the recording of Exile in the south of France in summer in the basement of Keith's castle in stifling heat with no ventilation.
not too often you hear two slide guitars on one song.this band was way more musically sophisticated than they ever let on.in fact, they'd probably deny it.
ggweb1919;What's stunning is that so many people, including Stones fans, have never heard Exile, their masterpiece.I like your 3,but I've got 15 more I love from that record.
Bill Wyman does great bass work on this song. He and Keith stopped speaking to each other around this time, and he was so disgusted with the drug use that he only played on eight tracks on "Exile."
@Staggerbaroque it's a myth mate, wyman is credited with all 18 songs on exile along with bill plummer (upright) it was recorded in the following one east studio

The Stones are like Batman. Down through the ages, no matter what version or incarnation, Bob Kane, Adam West, Frank Miller, Christian Bale, etc., it's ALL BatMan - pick one, or pick 'em all; Likewise they're still The Stones; whether you like them selling Kellogg's Rice Krispies on the BBC in '63, on the friggin' "Hollywood Palace", Psychedelia in '67, back-to-basics in '68 - 69, ''Glam' in '73, Disco in '78, She's So Cold/She's Hot, whatever, well I like it, like it, yes I do...like it all to∞
As a bass player I get a little pissed of as to how Bill Wyman is completely neglected with the new reissue of "Exile on Main Street." It's as if he was never in the band . He started with them and retired in the 90's. His simple yet dead on bass lines along with Charlie Watts kept all the Stones hits strong. Hey Bill I hope you're getting your payment due on this.
The problem with the album is it had so many varied styles of songs on it the album
was actually hard to digest because a lot of the songs ran over the 2.50 mark and the anticipation was more songs that sounded like the early bird special Tumbling Dice which never happened on the album. Plus believe it or not you had to get up and turn the album then get up and change the album then turn it again which made a loss of continuity "Fact ".
@himycatsdead Yeah, I think people expected 'more' Sticky Finger style musick. It was pretty confusing. I played it a fef times, recorded what I liked best on tape and left the album to collect dust. Today I'm embarresed to have done such a vulgar thing. In hindsight I think this is one of their best albums ever and really show where their roots are,

Dont fight it !!! , and dont compare bands , jeez , you guys sound like republicans and democrats for crying out loud.
Anybody know about the extended exile on main st they are sup to release ? A bunch of lost songs from the sessions in Keiths non ventilated basement? Cheers from Flagstaff AZ
Your right. They landed a million miles away with Gram Parsons on the moon. They will be there playing when this all ends. If you drive out to Joshua Tree and have packed in enough blotter paper you'll see him up there in the new Gilded Palace of Sin. See you on the weird side, Gram.
the rolling stones have not made one bad song. this song is freakin awesome. there is a reason they lasted more than the beatles.....because theyre better :)
@DuplexPaladins Lennon was killed after the group broke up, and harrison died after they broke up too. i love all of the stones' records. The Rolling Stones have pop, rock, blues, and a country sound. the beatles were pop & rock.
I can't believe how underappreciated this song is by just about everyone- including most stones fans. it's the third best song on exile next to rip this joint and rocks off.
@ggweb1919 Mick and the boys must have been sittin' aroun' smoking and had a Cap'n Beefheart album on. Jagger sounds exactly like he's tryin' to sound like mad Don Vliet. I call it the race to be outRageous! ;-D

@icl96
oh course. murder, cancer and group problems had nothing to do with it.
think about what your saying. The Rolling Stones have lasted long, and made more record then The Beatles, but how many records are crap?
I like The Stones, and hard rock as much as the next person; but The Stones don't even come close to The Beatles.

I call it the race to be outRageous! ;-D
