Yeah looks like reflection off the pool deck made lightning look closer then it actually is. But tellthe distance is 5 second lightning to thunder = 1 mile.
Yes, that one was certainly close. I just watched this one again and the great slo-mo seems to indicate a triple return stroke that is just out of shot to the left. It's probably much more powerful than the visible one and quite possibly a little closer to you.
The strike is about one fifth of a mile away, behind the tree to the left. The lightning "channel" you see next to the pool is caused by a ghost effect in the lens of the camera.
Wow, I looked again and you are exactly RIGHT. That explains the sound delay, too, and I agree with your distance estimate. It now seems obvious that the bolt is beyond the trees. It also explains why it was not nearly as loud as my other lightning video, which made my ears ring for quite a while. Thanks for messing up my video. :) Just kidding. I appreciate the note, and I'll change the description soon.

Did you see my other lightning video? There's no mistaking that distance. Too bad my focus was off!

It's a common trap to fall into Jeff. Many posters to YouTube of "close lightning" videos have made the same mistake.
Unfortunately many, unlike yourself, insist that the camera cannot lie. Ah, well.

Didn't your mother tell you to stay indoors when it's stormy?
