  • Dave Matthews live in central park is the best version of the song! Dave played at a concert after Dylan and when Dylan walked off stage he told Dave he didn't play All Along the Watchtower cuz he wanted to hear Dave play it!

  • @ko5ser51 dave matthews? really? haha

  • Dave Matthews live in central park is the best version of the song! Dave played at a concert after Dylan and when Dylan walked off stage he told Dave he didn't play All Along the Watchtower cuz he wanted to hear Dave play it!

  • perhaps the very best recording of this great song was done by Dave Mason!!!

  • Jimi Hendrix is hands down the most original guitarist that ever graced the earth with his presents. To me "most original" = most talented = greatest ever = Legend = his music is forever.

  • i cnt stand hearing about jimi hendrix its dylans fucking song pearl jam kicks jimis ass i think hendrix is overrated

  • @belicss90 well...then you're just plain stupid. Dylan, after hearing Jimi play it said, "hey man, I might've wrote that song, but it's yours"

  • pearl jam amazing i like dave's version but the version that pearl jam does is the best in my opinion pearl jam is one of the only great bands today along with the foo fighters and wilco

  • Hey, it's not that bad, its good in it's own right. It's full Pearl Jam style.

  • Dylan made the song.Hendrix perfected the song. Pearl Jam raped the song in the ass.

    This is just awful.

  • For me goes like

    Dylan -> U2 -> Pearl Jam -> Dave Mathews -> Hendrix

  • @Kaaiou : Paul Weller has a nice version also, imho.

  • sucks compared to Dave, Jimi, U2, and Dylon

  • i love pearl jam but this isnt a good cover at all

  • Hendrix - Hendrix - Hendrix

    No more.

  • @ rrichardpot and @ WykEdInC :

    Thank you !!

  • dave matthews version kicks any version's ass!

  • no fucking way

jimi's version is better. think about it, without henrix, perhaps pearl jam wouldn't even exist, jimi hendrix influenced so many artist. you could say he shaped (i regret saying it but together with the beatles) modern day music

  • @Lunyx yup its the most instense and best version yet! kudos to lunyx!

  • dave matthews does awsome at this so doe pearl jam!!!!

  • i think jimi's guitar work is what makes his version better

  • Comment removed

  • why do people always have to fucking moan who's version is better.....

    Just listen to the tune.!

  • DYLAN IS THE BEST !!!

  • no..... hendrix, it has to be hendrix

  • DYLAN !

    DYLAN IS "THE MUSIC"

  • @raffaele25 Yeah and Dylan covers Jimi's version as well it almost seems like a dedication to Jimi!

  • @WykEdInC Dylan wrote the song, jimi's covert it and Dylan said, you're so good, you can tell every one it's your song!

but that's no problem, they are awesome:)

  • I don't know of any guitarist today who can even be compared to Jimi.

  • Dylan listens thus will understand something !!

  • pearl jam sellout? HAHAHAHA

  • try the dave matthew's band. It's one of the best.

  • bob <3

damn have they mad eit live any more times then this1?

  • its bob"s song and that will always remain a fact.Hendrix did it best, neil young does it great and so do these guys.Enjoy the diversity

  • I like both versions, they bring different attributes to the song each, in hendrix's arguement he made it more famous by changing harmonica to guitar., but in bob dylan's he wrote a master piece. Either way it's All along the watchtower, one of the greatest fuckin' songs ever written. :)

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • the hell are you guys talking about murdock and bob? Jimi Hendrix introduced so much to rock music. He played chords no one had seen in arrangements no one had seen. Sure, he may not be much compared to guitarists today, but for his time, he was one BAD MOTHER FUCKER!

  • Although, you do know that this isn't Hendrix's song, right? Bob Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower....

  • oh yes, I know, I was just saying they are equal in their own right, really I just think it's immature to insult another person's opinion. Unless it's funny ;)

  • To each his own.....hahahaha

  • Not much compared to guitarists today? Seriously?

  • i got to call you out when you say Hendrix isn't much compared to today's guitarists. He is much more better than anyone has ever been on guitar. Sure, we've seen brilliant guitarists these days (Mike McCready, Synyster Gates, Herman Li, etc.) but Jimi played with more soul and was so much more inventive and creative with his music. He was the best and always will be.

  • Herman Li isn't that great of a guitarist IMO. :P

But you're right about playing with soul. While some guitarists today may be better than Jimi Hendrix skill wise, they will still never be better than him.

  • murdock2k8 is right

smcneal057 is a fagit ass licker

  • dude, im allowed to comment on a fucking video u tard the fact im allowed to comment on youtube video is basically asking my opinon

  • At least I didn't have to resort to swearing. You're a grown man and you can't come up with a better argument then that? To state green beans are green that is a fact, but to say "jimi is incredibly over rated." That is an opinion not a fact. I like Jimi Hendrix and I like his version of "All Along The Watchtower" that is my opinion. I am stating what I believe, and not resorting to verbal abuse because someone doesn't agree. Bye now!!!

  • its not an opinion its actually fact, i think youll find if he was still alive and white know on would know who he is

  • Stop arguing about this...please...(shaking head)

  • nah

  • ☻/

    /▌

/ \ Hi my name is Bob and I'm a faggot. Stop pasting me into videos'

  • The original is Bob Dylan's he wrote it and performed it on John Wesley Harding Album.

  • No one can beat the original Jimi Hendrix

  • Hendrix did not do the original, Bob Dylan did.

  • I know that now...

  • bob dylans version also owns jimis by a long way

  • No one asked you...

  • its simply a fact jimi is incredibly over rated

  • As I stated before. "No one asked you..."

  • sounds really weak compared to dave matthews in central park, dave belts the song out with everything he's got, best version i think

  • jimis version is the best!!!!!

    pearl jam are imitators!!!!!!!

  • imitators? WTF in which world do you live? this is a COVER!... omg.

  • Jimi Kills all....

  • although jimi didn't write it, he owns it!!!

  • No, Jimi's version is the best. LOL

  • that is the gayest version i have ever heard total garb with the bad audio, i mean yhis is garb but come on u2, wtf

  • U2 have the worst version by far,,cant stand that pretentious pop rock crap U2 turns out.just me opinion tho

  • This song is about the crucifixion of Christ and the dialogue between him and the man next to him. Every one intreprets it differently and uses music to add the emotion they deem necessary. Dylan=folksy, Hendrix=angry, etc.

  • Jimi Hendrix took that song to guitar heaven with him, check out the Isle of Wight live version.Jimi owns that song!

  • This song is a Bob Dylan masterpiece. Dylan performs this song in understated anger and contempt...Hendrix matched that intensity in a much different way. The DMB could never beas raw and angry Dylan, Hendrix, and PJ IMHO

  • the 2 dylan versions accoustic and the electric versions speak for themselves for their time. hendrix met dylans meaning in a different way with a sped up version. i disagree with you though. i love pearl jam and i love dave mtthews but dave matthews live performance of this at folson field for example far surpass pearl jam's quick cover and even hendrix.its sheer haunting.

  • This video that was shot by a fan in the crowd, and only shows half of the song, has over 100,000 views because it is, as far as I know, the best YouTube video of Pearl Jam covering AATW.

PJ really needs to have an AATW cover on their next DvD or something. We need more than this! =D

  • Why doesn't the video say that Neil Young also is there?

  • Nice!

    Elvis Preston King!

  • Jimis version is unrivalled! However, to compare Pearl Jam to Dave Matthew's band is quite unfair. PJ are fantastic and full of soul, whereas DMB are nothing but wankers. DMB is music for those who prefer art-school, sissyboy wanking...

  • cobolt78, ?

I understand you're not into the caricature of the stereotypical DMB fan (neither am I), but it is also "quite unfair" to hastily dismiss DMB as "nothing but wankers."

DMB are incredible musicians, and the quality of their work has absolutely nothing to do with the image of their diehard audience.

And by the way, Watchtower is DMB's encore bread and butter. As legendary as PJ is, it's ridiculous to assume they'll do the song the same justice.

    That's like DMB covering Ledbetter

  • Well actually, I went too far in my last comment. :-)

I do agree with you that DMB are fantastic musicians, I just wish they would make something more listenable out of it. ;-)

One of my best friends (the drummer of our lousy little band) really loves DMB and I just don't get it.

When it comes to PJ covering Watchtower, I actually assume the opposite! PJ could produce a rawer, more alive (pun not intended) version than DMB could -- I feel DMB to be a bit too polished for _my_ personal taste.

  • I like DMB's version because it builds up. It's different, and intense. I love PJ as well but they kind of make it into just another rock song, albeit a bitchin rock song.

  • I consider myself a huge PJ fan. They rule above all in my book. My second favorite goes to DMB hands down though. Both bands have VERY different and GREAT styles. Watchtower being covered by DMB is definitely superior but I completely agree with U2, DMB could never cover ledbetter.

  • Doesn't ANYONE get that DM ripped off his opening vocal approach on this song from Michael Hedges??

  • Dave Matthews is a full out artist on the guitar. To discredit him or his band's musicianship only shows ignorance of real music. Jimi's version is outstanding, but Pearl Jam's is nowhere near as powerful as DMB. Just because you don't like a band doesn't make them a terrible band or a bunch of wankers. If you haven't, watch the DMB version at Folsom Field and you'll see true soul. I'm glad to see you corrected yourself, though. I love PJ and DMB..ecletic differences for everyone.

  • No, I just watched it. The DMB at Folsom version is not much more than thrashing and screaming. If that is what you call "powerful" and impresses you, then you should be very impressed.

  • you're retarded. pearl jam and dave matthews band are both incredible bands. dylan's 2 original versions far surpass hendrix as does the dave matthews band. jimi hendrix is still an awesome version but doesnt have the power to stand against dmbs today.

  • Recordings like this are unfair to the performer.

  • It saddens me that it is evident that NONE of you below has ever heard Jimi Hendrix's version. The will be no other equal.

  • i've heard it. Dave's version is better.

  • whose dave?!

  • Dave Matthews Band, it's only mentioned 100 times in this comments area.

  • Kalohsback, with respect, Jimi's is great; Clapton and Lenny Kravitz do a fantastic version, Phish does a goody and Neil Young's is very good if a bit long.

Bob Dylan's original version is very good too.

This recording is unfair to Pearl Jam, who are a damn good band.

  • I hear you - I have mad respect for Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. Take 'Masters of War' for example? Alive? He is unbelievable. I am however tired of little twits commenting on firstly, such poor quality of recording and voicing opinions not even knowing the true history behind the song - this bears no reference to you, who seem to know a bit more of what's potting. I digress..

  • Thanks, Kahlosback.

You are right too about people who wouldn't have a clue making unfair, stupid comments.

  • Credit where credit is due.. ;) Even when the videologist is shaky..

  • Sucks the shit out of dead horses ass. doesnt have anything on Dave

  • Agreed. Dave's version is the best of all time!

  • Who's Dave?

  • I can agree with u but Nirvana wasn't the first band which created new wave of grunge , Soundgarden was first man.

  • hahah eddie vedder has a disgusting voice?? say what you want about pearl jam. but you cant deny that he has a great voice. and creed fucking sucks. and do some fucking research on music. pearl jams album "ten" came out a whole month before nevermind. they didnt "ride the wave". they were releasing grunge singles and writing grunge songs well before it became a popular genre of music following the release of "nevermind"

  • Patty2198 shouldn't judge them by a clip of them playing taken with a shitty camara! Get one of their live cds or dvds and judge then!

  • I am not all knowing when it comes to pearl jam, i dont hate them.. i do like this cover though, i love the screaming, mostly cause of the dave matthews version theres screaming..

but they did a fairly good job on this, i think they could do better on this song, they have all the damn skill to make it bad ass.!

  • To patty2198-i recommend you at least listen to pearl jam's own songs before calling them shit. This isn't their best i'll admit. And as far as the live show, in their day (1992) they were one of the best live shows of all time. Shut your ignorant mouth!

  • Naldieri: you got that right not one of there best covers, but they still have over 50 great ones. and yes they are greatest band in the world, quote from Ben Harper

  • I could not agree more.

  • thankyou

  • Yes they do put on a better show then Pearl Jam. Ozzy would tell u Pearl Jam suck! Why u think they don't play at Ozzfest. Pearl Jam can kiss my ass!

  • Pearl Jam own you and so do Black Sabbath... you are not worthy to listen to such artists

  • first of all why the fuck did u reply to ure own post? 2ndly you can go fuck urslf, just cos Pearl Jam are above eating Bat heads to gain attention dosent mean they arent good performers, they're obviusly doing smthn right if they can emerge as one of the best bands from the seatle scene and constantly sell out huge concerts for years. Ozzy is too drug fuckd to do shit all these days.

And finally, pearl jam shit on them as musos, and are overall better then ure shit. Ozzfest can suck my left nut

  • Black Sabbath had their moment sure, i dont mind them as a band but wat i have a problem is how u can completely disclass Pearl Jam, and fuck off they dont have anyone they have Mike McCready whos solos in live shows absolutly shit on Zakk Wylde, and they have one of the best drummers in teh world too. Black sabbath had their moment but their over and pearl jam still go strong. And look i dont mind ozzy, but Eddie Vedder shits in his mouth and burns the remains when it comes to vocals

  • jsfrulz I DON'T THINK SO BUDDY!!!!!!:)

  • :) Go duck yourself Patty, mayb a nice bit of anal rape well open you up to some good music and flush out the old shit

  • jsfrulz WHATEVEA!!!!! :)

  • fail

  • allright patty2198... enjoy your denial

  • mrjohnpaolo I say and do whateve I want!:)

  • mrjohnpaolo Wow! just a teenage punk!

  • thats what they all say patty

  • mrjohnpaolo Yes and I am proud of it!

  • Fuckin rights!

  • mnogo ste glupi, ovo je Dilanova pesma koju je prepevao Jimmy, kako ste samo glupi, mamu vam jebem

  • bob dylans song

  • Only one who can perform this properly is long but gone now. Even Dylan who wrote it can't play it like Jimi did :(.

WTB Time Machine to '65 :D

  • "If Neil Young did not help them they would be a club band still........fact" That's a quote from some guy named americafirst101 about this video. I laughed out loud at this one. How did Neil Young have anything to do with Pearl Jam's rise to fame? They weren't gigging with him until the album Vs., well after they were huge. Don't say "...fact" when you don't have your facts straight! lol

  • what the hell is this....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Shut up, fool.

  • NaturesGlory...<<--this name sound shit to me!!! He he he...

  • Yeah, cuz you know, koolkropek makes you the man.

  • serious? wow, pretty close-minded not to appreciate one of the truly CLASSIC and great bands of this generation. Not many groups have sold as many albums as this band. I guess what I'm saying is that 60 million people can't be wrong. But you can continue to live in your psychadellic world... wait, that went the way of the wind a long time ago. =)

  • hmmm, that post was supposed to be in response to koolkropek, not a new post.

  • this guy sounds like a shit salesman with a mouth full of samples.

  • Singer can't sing it, wheres Eddie!!??

  • That is Eddie!

  • Yield wasnt a gem?! are you an actual pearl jam fan? Yield is their best album!!

oh and for mylgeneration Baba O Riley is a song by The Who!!

  • I agree,not their song, for sure.

  • Pearl Jam forever

  • This version was ok...nothing compared to Dave Matthews Band though or Hendrix or Dylan. You don't have to be a rock god to have an opinion about the way musicians sound, alot of know-it-alls on youtube who get so defensive when their favourite bands are criticised. Personally i'd hate it if EVERYONE loved the music i listened to. Spend less time crying about youtube posts, and more time listening to the music.

  • nice version! peral jam rocks

  • Americanfirst, just to let you know what they have accomplished in the years they have been together has already surpassed anything you could ever do in your measly little existance...fact. if you had any form of musical coherence you would know a difference between a simple club/jam band and pearl jam. and really the only FACT is that you might as well be tone deaf anyway if you can't tell the difference... that son is a FACT!

  • americanfirst...i am positive you have no business making comments...fact...period. go get an education fucking idiot

  • They were godly at werchter belgium last year.

Like playing with your guitar behind your head was so awesome :D

And indeed, vedder can sing very good..They covered teenage wasteland from the who! :D

  • yeah man I was there! front row for them aswell it was awesome! theres a video on here somewhere and you can see my arm waving about when they were playing lol! and the who songs called "baba oriley" hehe pearl jam rule!

  • Bud you are a reject, eddie vedder has one of the best voices in music today and writes lyrics with just as much skill. You probably dont even play the guitar let along know how to sing with a vibratto. Pretty insulting to a lot of people to say pearl jam is out done by a band in a club...weak man

  • a basic jam band??? You are totally out of line here, man. Pearl Jam are arguably the best rock band that is still active (active not like bands that haven't written songs in decades and have only made live shows). If you take a few hours of your time just to check most of the things that have been uploaded here (youtube), i.e. the gigs from last year, playing older songs as well as new songs, and the level of performance, you would probably realize what a stupid statement you've made... fact!!!

  • a ha

  • all you people neeed to do is chill out and smoke some weed. and youll like pretty much any jam.

  • your so right. smoke some god damn weed

  • also, all dumbasses thinking there is no need to make a 2 to 2 1/2 song ten minutes long, its called jamming stupid shits, bands with this thing called talent do it

  • If you're implying that Pearl Jam lacks talent b/c they didn't "jam" this out for ten minutes you are the stupid shit. For the record, I like dave.

  • dear all DMB haters, Learn what true music is. IF you think DMB is putting you to sleep than you must having a sleeping disorder. Because DMB is the greatest band of our generation without question. You must not be able to recongnize some of the greatest musicians to ever step foot on stage......you bunch of tasteless assholes

  • no thats not the saying crawfish its everyones got opinions and no one ever cares about anyone else's opinion so keep it to yourself

  • Very Good Version

  • dmb sux, unless you enjoy watching shows with a bunch of 16 year olds that don't know shit about hendrix or dylan.

  • There are plenty of people in their 20's and 30's at a DMB show. You just can't beat the sax and violin which IMO seperates DMB. Every has their own opinion. What's that old saying? Opinions are like assholes?

  • This version sucks. DMB kills this.

  • aww i totally agree DMB does it the best

  • DMB is so overrated. Only people that like them are 18 year old girls who have no taste in real music.

I tried listening to the DMB version, but it was putting me to sleep.

  • i agree... there is no need to make a 2-2 1/2 minute song 10 minutes long... thats just gratuitious... pj rips through it like it should be...

    still dylan is the best

  • I don't know why people like you try to crush DMB like they are some kind of boys band. I've been listening to DMB, WSP, Phish, All Bros., etc.,etc.,etc..for about 15 years, and there is amazing music in every band who has soul. If you can't figure that out, I feel bad for you.

  • agreed....Just joined utube a couple of months ago, and can already see the pissed off dumbasses from people who have the confidence to enjoy music as a whole. Apparently cobra is one of those. Everybody have a nice one

  • wow, i'd love a qualite recording of this... it's such a good Dylan song, interpreted by Jimi, and then interpreted by Pearl jam. Loooovely

  • meddledeal its a dylan song hendrix covered it

  • Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth...two of my favorite bands doing a Hendrix song..FUCK YA!! One of my favorite shows of all time right there July 15, 16 and 18 2006! :)

  • ppppretty sure its a dylan song
