don't like what's happened to KOMA, now its just greatest hits... what the heck?? its been part of my growing up in NE Colorado to listen to 1520 AM..
Close. But that's not the jingle I remember first hearing that summer night out on the driveway diggin KOMA with my big sisters in our family's 57 Chevy station wagon-- clear up in Kansas, when I was about five.
Only came on at dark, playing top 40/contemporary rock, which is now all classic rock.
I really miss those days-- dragging Main, hanging at drive-in restaurants/drive-in movies-- and KOMA on in the background-- up through the 70s when FM killed it and the rest of AM rock and roll.
KOMA at 1520 KHz and WKY at 930 Hz battled it out in Oklahoma City for top station during the 1950s. You could hear KOMA all up through Kansas and Nebraska into the Dakotas telling us where "Spider and the Crabs" were playing next.
I grew up listening to KOMA and since I lived in NE Colorado, we could only listen to it after dark. I will never forget KOMA and love these classic jingles. AM 1520 and 92.5 FM. Yours TRULY.... KOMA
You could get Koma from San diego to Pueblo, CO, up until the mid 90's when another local station came on the air in PUeblo (now Defunk), KOMA was just Like KDZA (now also Defunk and a Pooor Sports talk station as of July 09)
The JAM "Right on Q" jingle package was also used on few Tejano stations throughout the 90s. I remember coming down to San Antonio when I was a kid and we were listening to KXTN Tejano 107.5; at the time they were using "Right On Q" Top-Of-Hour cut.
Believe it or not, KOMA in the 60s could reach Vietnam in the evening when they beamed all 50,000 watts to the West. They had the signal reception reports from AFRS to prove it.
I first became enamored of Top 40/rock radio because of the original KOMA shortly after it switched to the Top 40 format circa 1958. I still remember the original DJ lineup/shows: Hot Rod Roddy Riff, 6-9 a.m.; Real George Wiley, 9-noon; Kirby Kane Caper, noon-4 p.m.; "Sweet Daddy" Ron Thompson, 4-7 p.m.; Dapper Don Hodges, 7-midnight; and Jerry Payne, midnight-6 (with Silent Sam, all-automated, all-night Wednesdays). What memories of the now-defunct AM call letters KOMA.
KOMA changed to KOKC and KVOO is now known as KFAQ, and both are now news-talk stations. The old calls live on the FM band. KOMA is now classic hits, playing mostly 70's now.
It's really a shame that the fools who own these stations now thought these legendary stations had to get a new image and toss 60+ years of radio history down the toilet.
I echo your sentiments. It was always good to hear KOMA (prior to the swtich to KOKC news-talk) and listen to the same songs that I grew up with when KOMA was playing them as original Top 40 tunes years ago. But alas! All good things come to an end.
I use to listen to KOMA on my clock radio at night in bed when I was a teenager, and it wasn't an oldies station then it was a top 40 station. It iwas a powerful radio station that reached out far and wide at night. The sound of this really brings back some memories.
I used to listen to KOMA a lot in the morning before I went to work at the radio station (the first clip on here is from 4:59 AM!...no more of that early morning stuff now hehe)
It along with KVOO are now talk formats unfortunately (although KOMA-FM may still be oldies)
The calls KOMA.. and it was an oldies station..hmmm one can only imagine the jokes that were made by those who not into the oldies. And KBOO, another interesting Call.
Thanks! It is actually KVOO although it does sound a lot like KBOO. I think it has changed its call letters since then though and changed to a talk format.

Of all the radio stations I've listened to over the years, I think KOMA had the best of jingles.

Yeah, back in the 60's I listened to KOMA or WKY. What good memories those radio stations gave me as a kid growing up. Long live the oldies.
