Maria Callas or Victoria de los Angeles? I know this is unfair to the many great sopranos past and present, but to me and many opera lovers, THIS IS the best rendtion of "O mio Babbino caro"
This version is the best to my ears. She doesn't blatantly use the aria to highlight her vocal prowess in an innappropriate way, like most of them do. She sounds like a young girl talking to her father and displays vocal restraint in all the right places. The technique is superb. This rendition is a little jewel.
Not much of an opera fan but I took this piece on utube an compared all the different sopranos and i loved this version the best. De Los Angeles has a remarkably velvet voice. So many other well known sopranos produce a harsh sound when hitting the high notes.
I also like the early version recorded by Monserrat Caballe - a more powerful if slightly less beautiful voice. But the Victoria DLA version is quite lovely. In her range of expertise, Victoria DLA probably had the most beautiful soprano voice of the post-war performaners and when teamed up with Jussi Bjorling (as in Madama Butterfly) the combination was electric.
The three are cream of the crop, but II don't know whether you can notice that whereas Renata Tebaldi sings this with her gifted voice, and Maria Callas sings it falling back on her diva-like persona, Victoria de los Angeles sings it and everything else essentially with her soul, her only musical offering.
She was simply a lovely human being whose beautiful voice and tender smile were like open windows into her soul. I will forever treasure her musical legacy.
In modern times, Renee Fleming's version is exceptional; sophisticated and strong. Caballe's is almost overwhelmingly powerful and bewitching. But Victoria de los angeles' version is even better; it brings tears to may eyes. She was impossibly talented.
De Los Angeles was noted for being a great poetess and a great musician at the same time, getting to the heart of both the poetry of the text and the arching of the musical phrases. Fleming certainly has a magnificent and well-trained voice, but was never either a true poet or a true musician, which is the difference.

that is BS, callas has the most emotion, tebaldi is the most technical, and victoria well shes a little of both, but monserrat does it the most beautiful
De los Angeles takes first prize in interpretation, purity of tone, and vocal splendour.Simply exquisite.I'm biased--my site is devoted to many of her pieces.5*
I admit I'm highly biased; she is, after all, my favourite soprano. She opened the world of opera to me when I was very young, and I'm forever grateful. Many sopranos, if not all, have sung this aria. De los Angeles takes first prize in interpretation, purity of tone, and vocal splendor. As mentioned, simply exquisite.

While this version is very good, it seemed to be even better if recorded nowadays.

I wish De los Angeles had recorded Gilda, she would have been perfect in that role.

stlivermore,
You hit the nail on the head. That's why I ultimately chose VDLA over Tebaldi. Callas is never in consideration for me.
