  • Fuck. This song just makes my soul feel fucking amazing! Aghh!

  • the french really knew how to protest, good on them. these crazy Parisians are awesome as fook

  • They remind me of The Horrors.

  • It would be nice if i could understand what theyre saying, but there is too much sound and his voice is too low.

  • @SICCOSTATUS956 that's not really a bad thing, trading in coherent vocals for a coherent mood...mood, thats what CS are about for me, and that's better than hearing trite protest lyrics or sombre platitudes...i'm not saying theyre not poetic, they might be, i havent read their lyrics much, but thank god this music's more concerned about atmosphere than that boring concern for "conveying a message/story" that literal simpletons want out of music so often

  • @carlo88moe Well put. Mood and Tone go far with me.

  • @SICCOSTATUS956 have you ever been in a protest or a concert? now we're you more taken by hearing every word o fsome dude's speech/hearing the lyrics lucidly or by the electricity in the ether

  • French people are so beautiful.

  • I hear a bit of Jesus and Mary Chain also.

  • KURT VILE expressed; yeah... YEAH...

  • tepid

  • To the people getting pissed about the Joy Division comparisons, the bass baritone vocal style of both this singer and Ian Curtis are remarkably similar, and considering how unique of a singing style that is no shit people are going to compare these guys to Curtis and JD, there are very few singers utilizing that particular vocal style.

Song and vid both rule by the way.

  • Sounds like the last time you tryed to occupy something

  • i don't hear jd either and i'm a fan of jd.

  • sounds like the jesus and mary chain

  • somewhere between the houses of joy division and the doors these guys got lost, and now theyre wonderfully running in the woods

  • @carlo88moe Hahaha, that sums this band up nicely

  • they're well-deserved protégés of JOY DIVISION unlike ummm... a hundred other wannabes???

  • to all who think this band sounds like joy division...Have you ever listened to joy division? Or crystal stilts fully? not one song here or there.... They don't sound like eachother, they have totally different production and they are totally different bands, jsut because the two singers have a low vocal register dose not mean they are even remotely close...Please...stop we are all tired of the JD comparisions..Crystal stilts is an original unique band so is JD there's your comparison

  • DARK SMITHS

  • This song is amazing, i've just discovered this band! And yes, it sounds pretty much like JD but i'd say more happier? That's because i like it :)

  • I love crystal stilts too much to mention, I listen to them everyday.

  • Sounds like joy division, bass line is nearly identical to a JD line, the guitar licks are similar and the vocals as well. No necessarily a bad thing though.

  • I think it sounds like Joy Division.

  • It really sounds like great music.

  • Project: KOMAKINO sounds a lot like Joy Division, Crystal Stilts well I can see some if even minor influence from Joy Division in their songs. So what if they are and so what if someone thinks they sound like Joy Division, music is about personal opinons and tastes. I personally can hear a slight hint of JD in this song, so god strike me down if I have sinned but as far as I'm concerned it is not a bad thing that a band like this is to be compared to Joy Division.

  • Where and when did the riot in the video take place?

  • @SoggyAnimalCracker Paris, '68

  • @SoggyAnimalCracker The film used for the music video is footage from the French Riots of 1968, sometimes called the Paris May. The Riots last for more than a month, caused the collapse of the Charles De Gaulle Presidency, forced a rewriting of a new constitution, brought the economy of France to a complete halt (literally nothing moved, or could be moved), and forced Charles de Gaulle to flee the country for a few days.

  • @LaGuardiaSuiza Thanks. The architecture looked European but I wasn't completely sure.

  • @SoggyAnimalCracker

My brain, 4 minutes and 29 seconds ago.

  • stone roses meets spacemen 3

  • @unitytribe They sound like joy division dont you know ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Shutup all you hipster/ music gurus.enjoy the song.

  • I love this song, it's more influenced by JAMC than Joy Division in my opinion, but has something distinctive about it.

An observation: Have you noticed that the rioters here are very smartly dressed, unlike our idiots dressed in filthy tracksuits in London recently? The only thing in common being they're spoilt brats in a tantrum.

    Anyway, I love noise pop.

  • People saying this is like Joy Division is there opinion, and sounding like Joy Division isn't a bad thing, if anything it is a compliment, so leave get over the fact that they have an with of Joy Division about them. (Which they do)

  • This definitely has almost the same feel as Joy Division but it sure isn't Joy division.

  • It´s like, every song with a nice bass line and some "darker" vocals sounds like Joy Division... here´s a fact, this is not Joy Division, everyone agrees? So listen to it, like it or don´t like it.

  • "Yeah, I´m so hype... everything sounds like Joy Division to me. I´m so bored. I wanna be a music critic. Mom, where´s my milk?"

  • Great song, but obviously it's more important if it sounds like a certain band or not.

    It doesn't fucking matter.Idiots.Including me.

  • I FRIGGIN LOVE THIS BAND

  • Joy division all over da place.

  • It sounds like it's influenced by Joy Division, but it is in no way a ripoff.

    Great song. Great band.

  • there's no joy division in that song. jd was more noisy cos of martin hannett. crystal stilts sounds more like a 70's band.

  • It seems poetic and captures the theme of the video when everyone makes sure to link their arms back together after passing the cameraman at the end of the video. Makes me happy : )

  • 1. THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE JOY DIVISION. Not at all...

    2. Words can not describe how much i love this song&video.

  • This is fantastic tune and they are great band, but it is hard to disagree that it sounds exactly like Joy Division.

  • Sounds like White Lies mixed in a bit with Joy Division blended a bit with a beachy influence. Nice.

  • it doesnt sound like joy division at all. except for the simple, raw bassline, the open snare marching beat, the clean guitar, and the low and reverbered vocals. it´s closer to abba.

  • deep vocals and strong bass do not a joy division band make.

  • dont come here to listen to joy division, come here for the crystal stilts.... pay your respect theres no need to bash these guys

  • @ricenbeans82 If I was in a band and was referenced to Joy Division I don't think I'd feel bashed, I'd take it as a compliment. Music is always compared to other music, people connect and make connections, to me this reminds me of Joy Division, but thats half the reason I love this band, and a host of other bands. In turn Joy Division remind me of bands I was listening to before they arrived on the scene. It's just the way it is.

  • For what its worth, this is one of the best indie tracks I have heard for a long time, and yes it does sound very JD, but who cares... enjoy it for what it is.

  • Next they will say this sounds exactly like Interpol! lol

  • to everyone saying this sounds exactly like joy division or whatever,

ACTUALLY IT SOUND LIKE JOY DIVISION!

...ok it does sound like JD or an emulation of it. I've been listening JD since 1992. Just sayin'

  • joy division 2.0.

    DEAL WITH IT FAGGOTS.

  • maybe its cause ive been up 13 hours but does this remind anyone else of the doors a bit?

  • Ian curtis is not dead!!!!

  • It doesn't sound like joy division, but you can sing along "love will tear us apart" on the chorus with the synth lead! The chords are identical! Great song anyway

    !

  • Yep, Sound ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like Joy Division.

  • Kinda sounds like a cross between....hmmm, let me throw out two random bands, one of them obscure...how about Ministry and APB?

  • Reminds me of the Paris May

  • boooooring.

  • Sounds like a cross between Orange Juice and Joy Division. Good stuff.

  • they sound kinda like a mix between velvet underground and the 13th floor elevators.

    lov dis.

  • they actually sound like dirgey surf rock to me. not joy division.

  • Further listening; Favour, by The Wake, great tune.

  • #SPANISHREVOLUTION

    PEOPLE OF EUROPE RISE UP!!!!!!!!!

    #EUROPEANREVOLUTION

  • @anthemszekely Absolutely not true. The May '68 movement started at the University of Nanterre. The PCF and unions joined later.

  • I'd like to know more about the equipment the keyboardists uses. I asked him about this after the show here in Madison and was suprised to hear the sweet psychadelic fuzz was being produced with "an old shitty casiotone 86."

How do you make a casiotone sound like that??

  • he sounds like Morissey ,not Curtis

  • #spanishrevolution come #europeanrevolution

  • only the vocal sounds like joy division a little to me,not musically at all

  • Yes it does seems like Joy Division, of course is not totally the same, but sound a bit and we only have to get over it, they're both really great bands, enjoy the god damn music then!

  • Comment removed

  • People are people, arguing about useless topics is what keeps the semi-cultural society alive. Bul I'll just lay back and enjoy the music.

  • this is crystal stilts, not joy division, interpol, the smiths or whatever you'd like to compare it with.

  • they kind of sound like that one band the joyful dividers

  • interpol?

  • And the bass is pretty Joy Division-y

  • He sings like Ian Curtis.

  • to everyone saying this sounds exactly like joy division or whatever,

ACTUALLY LISTEN TO SOME FUCKING JOY DIVISION YOU IDIOTS!

  • @dixy10 THANK GOD SOMEONE HAS FINALLY SAID IT

  • @dixy10 what up with the harsh words? That's rather obnoxious of you. As for it sounding like Joy Division I guess the tambourine gave it away since they had so much of it in their songs. Ha ha ha. Maybe once you graduate from muscial theory class and actually expand your musical library you will hear things diffrently. I think they sound more like New Zeleand bands. Such as The Clean,Dadamah,Dissolve,Roy Montgomery,The Tall Dwarfs,The Chills, or even The Bats.

  • @dixy10 ACTUALLY TRY TO LISTEN TO SOMETHING BESIDES FUCKING JOY DIVISION YOU IDIOT!

OPINONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES. EVERYONE HAS ONE!

NOW TRY BEING NICE WILL YA?

  • @eric1012wi uhh... what? are you agreeing or disagreeing with me? you seem to be taking the piss out of me saying they don't sound like joy division and then you say they sound more like NZ bands etc. which i may or may not agree with (i haven't heard anything by those bands specifically). in my opinion, crystal stilts owe much more to the velvet underground, JAMC and the various C86 bands than they do joy division.

  • @dixy10 I agree. but after consuming records, hearing songs all over the city and all maybe you'd like someone to make something new.

  • @dixy10 Spot on, yes there is a tiny bit of Peter Hook bass but really, there's a million other things too, a lot of which the band brings themselves. Great fucking song.

  • @dixy10 Hey faggot this sounds like Joy Division!

  • @dixy10 Apart from the bass leading the melody, the simple clean guitar, the snare led drums and the bass baritone reverbed vocals, it sounds nothing like Joy Division!

  • @mrselfdestruct76 that whole argument (as if we really need to be arguing about this) kinda falls down tho once you compare them to nearly any other guitar band.

e.g. who do crystal stilts sound more like: JD or the fall? easily the fall.

JD or the jesus and mary chain? JMC (altho neither particularly)

JD or the kinks? both their albums have a clear kinks influence if you actually bother listening to em, way more obvious than anything of joy division's.

JD or the wedding present? etc. etc....

  • @dixy10 but I don't listen to the kinks so how can it remind me of them , and I don't particularly like JMC so I'm not gonna link it to them either. You are in a way just disproving your own point. As a middle aged man the reason I like this band is because it reminds me of JD which in turn reminds me of my teenage years. so for me there is no denying that this sounds like JD, it's not a carbon copy and it's not an insult to the band to apply the reference.

  • @dixy10 And besides I remember being (and still am) pointed to bands that were/are no longer around by someone saying that a current band reminds them of another. There is no harm in that, and you then go and investigate that band and gain something. Music snobbery generally pisses me off, if some kid who has never really heard of JD but loves CS then gets to experience JD then surely that is a good thing.

  • @mrselfdestruct76 well of course that's a good thing. 'music snobbery' to me, however, consists of people who have probably only heard one or two joy division songs then discovering crystal stilts, only to write them off as shit or a rip-off of JD when actually they know very little of the sound(s) of either. i was a huge fan of JD before i found out about CS (still am), heard everything by both bands and yet see very little similarity.

  • @dixy10 but reading through this thread nobody seems to have said it in a negative way, in fact most are complimentary. The people who are making the most fuss seem to be the people telling others to go out and to "ACTUALLY LISTEN TO JOY DIVISION" which I'm afraid comes across as a bit holier than though, I have been a JD fan since they arrived, so I'm pretty sure I've listened to Joy Division, thats all I'm saying.

  • @dixy10 You're 100% right it doesn't... LOL XD !

  • @dixy10 Just because it does have a resemblance to Joy division doesn't mean you have to get angry about it. Maybe the reason so many people say that it sounds like joy division is because they've listened to joy division before. That being said, who gives a shit? This song is awesome regardless.

  • I hear joy division everywhere!!! About time!!!

  • @l0z3rk1d182 this doesn't really sound like Joy Division

  • @angularrecords

Naw, you can see where he got it. The way the sharp guitar goes over the bass, and the melancholy vocals.

I mean of course it isn't a rip off, but it's still really Joy Division.

  • @angularrecords It really sounds a lot like Joy Division dude

  • Paredes de Coura, cá vos espero.

  • Hey everyone, this isn't joy division. this is crystal stilts. its 2011. not 1979. big gap between the music.

  • I prefer the register he sang this song in for Converging in the Quiet

  • This is fucking great,.

  • Joy Division + The Church

  • @HeronOfHeaven It's completely not Joy Division

  • @angularrecords there are definite Joy Division elements in there...and that's not a bad thing. But it's by no means a rip off. Good stuff.

  • @HeronOfHeaven Its not joy division. Why is that anything with reverb, and a distorted bass is immediately said to sound like joy division. I think you'll actually need to listen to joy division. Sounds a lot like all you people ever do is listen to "Love will tear us apart" and think yh this is what all joy division songs sound like. Mate go out and buy Unknown pleasures. Then say this sounds like Joy division.

  • @HeronOfHeaven it sounds a bit like JD and thats why I like them! :)

  • the alleged leftist imagery is cool adding to an already awesome song

  • I wouldn't just say Crustal Stilts are "trying to be Joy Division". I mean that's one influence, mostly in the vocals, but musically this is a lot more like an early Smiths song with a little late-80s dreampop. This was probably my fave album of '09.

  • @droneforever

There we go, but The Smiths....Idk man, the Smiths guitar was way peppier and more upbeat than this guitar. This is more Bass than anything, and Joy Division is mainly Bass.

  • This is just one step away from Ian Curtis. Cheers.

  • What is it with everyone trying to be like Joy Division nowadays? Nobody wants to be like Captain & Tenille, The Village People, or George Michael anymore. :(

  • i like that natural rip in the guitar

  • i wonder why they chose protests in paris in 1968 for this song

  • @kevinspirit

rock n' roll is incendiary man!

  • yeah definitely some joy division in there. powerful song and video.

  • Love it, but is this not converging in the quiet?!

  • @Giners66 I agree. The music sounds so similar to converging in the quiet... almost exactly the same. hmm...

  • @Giners66 this is a remake i believe

  • One of my favorite songs ever...so beautiful

Very glad I found this band

  • What is this footage of?

  • @imdaman0000 1968 student protest in Paris.

  • I've just came across them and I though they were an old band. It's quite interesting to hear that they released their debut album in 2008 :)

  • this is likw whats happning now with fees in UK

  • I love the laid back vocals.............

  • @anthemszekely You learn something new everyday my friend, and I just learned from you. I was not aware of this but it seems all good things have their negative in life. Shame that the students hijacked the protest, although it seems things like that are bound to occur with any counter-culture movement. Things that poorer class individuals do will always attract richer kids who are bound to immitate. On the other hand, they did make it seem like the movement of '68 had more followers.

  • This band plays the music in my head. I think I'm in love.

  • This is THE SHIT.

  • Nothing like the Magnetic Fields, who I HATE. Whereas, I really dig this... if you think that, yer probably too young to know what is really "underneath" music like this song.

  • @aeonosphere what's wrong with the magnetic fields? (true though, can't spot any real similarities

    great song btw

  • can someone upload their other single magnetic moon?

  • This is great! But this sounds more like Joy Division than any Editors or Interpol or whoever does. Man, I miss Ian, even though he died before I was born.

  • xxx

  • Just found this band and I am in love!!! Just awesome! :)

  • Sois Jeune et Tais Toi

  • Comment removed

  • its got that magnetic fields undertone - the images are not in sync with the ethereal beauty of the music...

  • Comment removed

  • mrlowdangle i totally agree with you i was thinking the same

  • May 68 in Paris! Awesome!

  • it´s one the favorite songs of the all time´s

  • jamc

  • Is this the Paris student riots in the 60's? The S.I Influenced ones?

  • why was this on idle army? its not good at all lmao

  • hmmm more modern lovers meets joy division perhaps. i like this a lot tho. visceral bass sound. these cats are cool cats :) this music is quite hypnotic i imagine it's really good live. i was introduced to this by gideon coe at 6 music. if anyone is interested in protesting now protest against 6 musics closure maybe ?

  • This is one of my favorite songs by them :DD

  • Excellent!!!

  • video goes great the song

  • where could i see this footage with out the music?

  • right here! just turn the volume down...

  • does sound a little like joy division, not exactly though. both bands are good so who cares.

  • this is the best song I've heard in a while. so happy they are bringing the sound back! long live good music.

  • Ian would love this :)

    I love this.

  • this reeks of ian curtis in the best way possible

  • DEPARTURE

  • One smooth song...great clip.....You have your plasma screen...you have your computer....you have your children and school fees to worry about....you have a job to maintain your house payments...You have lost your will to fight!

  • It all happened in the sixties, and now it needs to happen again. We have all become so comfortable with our lot. Its hard to protest now because there isnt one thing to protest about. Paris, Seoul, Kent State, and more.. violent protest enmasse for better living!

  • This is pure Joy Division

  • oh wow!

i loved the song and i happened to look it up... the video is great, i love it

  • I remember to the voice of Curtis

  • uf great song and wonderful video :)

  • Mai 68

  • great music. lovely stuff

  • Video of the Year! (because it features the high point of Situationism).

  • @adyntheskier

  • Nice song it has some Joy Division influence

  • Good things!
