ahhhhh! that looks so amazing. ive been a vegetarian for 2 years and i admire and respect Guy's open mindedness (is that a word?) lol and also his knowledge is great. i hate how evry1 just thinks a veggie burger is a "salad on a bun". but they just dont know what theyre missing...and plus i live in a small town in sc. so its like carnivore city. lol.
I'm looking for the clip I saw the other day of Guy going to a place that only had one kind of burger on their menu: a Veggie made with Eggplant. What is the name of the place?
Just went by sight on the measurements, but I made this and it turned out pretty good. Not fantastic, but it's healthy and a great alternative. I'll make it again and hopefully get better. I think I made it too big. The big ones are hard to eat in one sitting..
Awesome, I gotta try that burger made from beans, veggies, and oats. Usually, whenever I've eaten a veggie burger, it's the ones with beef-simulated soy patties. Not that I have anything against soy; goes well as tofu in stir fry, and tofu pudding dessert. But if I wanted beef flavor, might as well have a burger made from meat. I don't see any difference from vegetarian/non-vegetarian food, just as long as they taste good.
That's funny. People will go out of their way to believe that soy is somehow bad for you. Of course, if you have an allergy to it - that is a problem. If you consume it to excess - that may be a problem, but the science is very weak. The fact that millions of the heathiest people on earth consume soy should tell you something. Contrast that with eating meat and dairy. Meat and dairy are at the root of many diseases that plague affluent nations. I'll take soy over meat and dairy any day.
Apart from the question as to whether soy even has demonstrable health benefits, there are long-standing concerns that soy may have negative effects on thyroid function and hormonal health. Soy falls into a category of foods known as goitrogens -- vegetables, grains and foods that promote formation of goiter -- an enlarged thyroid. Some goitrogens also have a definite antithyroid effect, and appear to be able to slow thyroid function, and in some cases, trigger thyroid disease.
These concerns have been studied for years, but were raised specifically by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) researchers Daniel Doerge and Daniel Sheehan. Doerge and Sheehan were the FDA's key experts on soy. In 2000, Doerge and Sheehan wrote a controversial letter of protest (PDF) to their own employer, protesting the positive health claims for soy that the FDA was approving at the time. They wrote:
... there is abundant evidence that some of the isoflavones found in soy, including genistein and equol, a metabolize of daidzen, demonstrate toxicity in estrogen sensitive tissues and in the thyroid. This is true for a number of species, including humans. Additionally, isoflavones are inhibitors of the thyroid peroxidase which makes T3 and T4. Inhibition can be expected to generate thyroid abnormalities, including goiter and autoimmune thyroiditis.
There exists a significant body of animal data that demonstrates goitrogenic and even carcinogenic effects of soy products. Moreover, there are significant reports of goitrogenic effects from soy consumption in human infants and adults.
nEWwORLDhOARDER, you have done a marvelous job of demonstrating my point. People will go out of their way to believe that soy is bad. D&S warned of potential health risks of soy. The meat and dairy industry spend billions on PR to see that people believe it. But, evidence that the risks are real and significance is extremely weak. The same "dangerous" compounds occur in many common plant foods, not just soy. However, the evidence for health problems from eating meat and dairy is overwhelming.
Since when do omnivores prefer the Styrofoam flavored non-food texture of tofu to meat and dairy? If I wasn't a vegan I wouldn't give a rat's ass what soy food does to the human thyroid. If you want to eat that shit, go right ahead but as this video demonstrates, there are much healthier and tastier alternatives to tofu or any unfermented soy "food."
nEWwORLDhOARDER, omnivore? I never said I was a fan of soy. I really don't eat it that much. It is just that I am much less of a fan when it comes to corporate PR scare tactics. What I like best about the Tofu Scramble is the broccoli. The tofu is just kind of there, but that's OK with me. I'm not worried. I get just as many terrifying isoflavones and phytoestrogens and other scary chemical compounds from the broccoli. You just can't beat a whole food vegetarian (OK, vegan) diet.
Not everyone wants to be in the national spotlight. If you ask me I would like blue plate NOT to be nationalized, the wait for a table is already too long! I don't think they could handle anymore business.
Does it really matter if the cook is excited about it?
Wow, that actually made me like Guy a little more... I'm very surprised he was so open-minded about a vegan burger - and that he called it "dynamite" & that he'd order it again "in a heartbeat." He just seems so crazy for meat normally. Good for him! :)
Also, I think maybe the cook was just shy - not disinterested or rude. Some people are just not naturals in front of the camera. He could have been nervous!
@JessaCita When he was growing up, Guy's parents lived on a macrobiotic diet. That's probably why. I just found that out about ten minutes ago though, so I'm just as newly impressed :)
I think you guys are reading too much into the guy's seemingly lack of interest. Some ppl just don't ever get too excited about anything, and ppl tend to mis-read their emotions.

yeah the disinterested behavior is bothersome (considering the free advertising)....kinda makes you wonder is being vegetarian a soapbox or a health issue.........excellent patty tho.........justifies those fries......
I feel the same way, I want to make these for 4th of July, but then again, they are a restaurant. They don't want t give away their secrets - hence, they never fully talking about what's in the "monkey mix". Oh well. We'll see how it goes..
the owner seemed pretty relaxed not sure whatever you people are whinning about

Blue Plate diner is great. I like the vegan burger but their portabello hummus sandwich (also vegan) is even better!

Surprising to see a vegetarian platter but it's interesting to see how he sometimes covers European cuisine on this show.
