@Therysinx This method is for those in drumlines.........Check out some DCI drumlines and see how they execute their drill. This is also a method for building your wrists, if I was going to get Carpal tunnel, I would have it by now. I have been playing for 49 yrs! LOL
Hi, you're one of the very few people I've ever seen on here using the moongel pad. I would LOVE to invest in one of these, but cannot find them on the internet. Where'd you get yours?:)
Hi again,i have almost all of the Vic firth sticks :Hardimon,Scott Johnson,Tom Hannum,Tom Float ,ect...Also some Promark and more, and i never see one whit bigger tip,so where can i get those kind of sticks ? Did you have a store or a web site that you think would be good for me ? I am in Montreal...(hope my english is ok !!!)
The technique idea, btw, is all Billy Gladstone. Less for more, push into drum and allow stick to return back up and "catch" in hand in up position. Think "Hands down, stick up" lol
IF there truly is NO rebound (unlike a pillow, or something with limited but slight rebound), the pad will hinder your playing with regular and consistent use.
It really should be a quick on-the-spot warmup tool, nothing more.
practicing on a pillow or something with LIMITED rebound, gripping up on the sticks and balancing the fulcrum difference does work to give a good workout, and not develop the wrong muscles; utilize the small hand/wrist/arm muscles properly.
@PositivelyBored Yes, you are corrrect in saying you wouldn't want to have this pad as your only pad. I tell my students that have absolutely NO strength in their grip and wrists, to do the pillow practice simply to let them know that they need to stroke some things instead of just loose bouncing on everything they play.
Jojo mayer talks about how working on this kind of surface is actually bad for the tone of ur drums. And he says can actually slow u down. I know of other big cats that say same thing if ur kit has rebound even one bounce then learn to work with it.
@ediot6969 I agree but you should still practice on this kind of surface. You definitely want to learn to work with the rebound that your drums offer, but you still want your wrists and fingers strong enough that they will be able to take full advantage of said rebound without completely relying on it.
Jojo is correct. However, that is given you make no adjustments to your grip or technique compared to playing on a regular drum.
I have found that gripping up on the sticks slightly more than usual ( just above the normal fulcrum), you can find a better fulcrum for playing on surfaces that have less rebound AND get the same strengthening and rebound when on real drums or cymbals, etc
The idea is to dedicate time to practicing everything so you can play everything.
@wildicepick If you were to peel back the outer plastic layer that wraps the stuff, yes, it's quite sticky inside! Mine ruptured after years of playing, and it was pretty gooey. Same stuff, same company.

How bad do those dent? That one looks like an abused drumset head at my school!

Nice but you shouldn't just play with your wrist. Especially on a no rebound surface; get your arms into it! (or risk getting carpal tunnel)

Hi ! really like what you do,what kind of sticks are you using here ?
bogoto2112 9 months ago
@bogoto2112 These are pipe drumming sticks
dtdrummerlady 9 months ago
@dtdrummerlady Thant's, so pipe drum sticks have bigger tip than the marching ones ???
bogoto2112 9 months ago
@bogoto2112 Yes, the sticks are lighter and tapered more at the round tip. They are really awesome sticks to play rudiments with.

@PositivelyBored With this pad, there is no "catch". It is strictly "stroking" !!

starting at about 0:24 you might want to work more to keep your sticks in the center, they are going all over the place.
