Chaka Khan's vocals, notes, and soul fluctuates like a soaring eagle where as Erykah's vocals are mid drift, notes sterile, and soul fluctuates like a new york city pigeon. the reason Erykah did that cover was because she can hit SIMILAR notes as Chaka, in other words she's just mimicking what Chaka is actually doing and that's fine and dandy cause i know for the love of god i couldn't on a bad day.
Ms. Khan has brought me so much beautiful music and introduced me to so many great musicians backing her, I can't thank her enough. This line up with TJ Scruggs and Tony Maiden is one of my favorites (if there has to be one).
Plus Erykah is a soprano singing this song!!! Chaka is a contalto singing in a soprano range!!! This means all her high notes have bottom to them & don't thin out & tail off like Erykahs!!!

Saw both Erykah and Chaka at the Tobago Jazz Experience over the weekend 23-25 April 2010 in Tobago, West Indies. Both ladies can saaaaang! High notes and all. Chaka has admitted to drug use, but her voice, her instrument is not damaged like our other favorite diva, Whitney Houston!!!
Both women [ Erykah Badu & Chaka Khan] both sang the song wonderfully. they both sang it in their own way. Erykah covered the song...she's not suppose to sound like Chaka Khan bc she's Erykah Badu....a cover means expressing the song you like it....while also giving homage to the original artists. Sure Erykah hit higher notes...ok given. Chaka khan has her own range as well. It's not about competition.

But, here;s the point I was trying to make- Chaka is a once is lifetime songtress and they just didn't measure covering her signature songs. I would have said the same things about Chaka if she covered an Ella Fitzgerald songs- she'd likely come up short

@rufus317 Erkah hit a D6 to be correct, and she has hit E-flat several times along with D6's. Actually Erkah is the highest belter in music period and it is effortless for her.
It is an effort for Erica, all head voice. She can stand toe to toe with the " voice" , CHAKA'S voice is has soo much depth she'd drown next to her. CHAKA IS MY FAVORITE, but, Erica ..and Chaka are not the technically highest belters..European and Latin Americans claim that title.

I love Erykah like everyone else, mainly because she is one of only a few artists today who embraces the inspiration of Chaka and the "standard" set by the Old School.
There is no question about Chaka's vocal range. Just look at her body of work of over 30+ years. She still performs! Her range is dynamic, powerful to say the least.
Stay is my most favorite song of Chaka Khan and Rufus. I love it. Chaka has gained a bit of weight though the sister can still croon. She puts on a great stage performance. Her voice doesn't skip a beat. The sista is Baaad!

AND .(meaning you are the best and considered the standard to which "funk" is graded) as well as when someone decided to do a remake of you're song then the right to compare is there. Saw both Erykah and Chaka at the Tobago Jazz Experience over the weekend 23-25 April 2010 in Tobago, West Indies. Both ladies can saaaaang! High notes and all. Chaka has admitted to drug use, but her voice, her instrument is not damaged like our other favorite diva, Whitney Houston!!!

Both women [ Erykah Badu & Chaka Khan] both sang the song wonderfully. they both sang it in their own way. Erykah covered the song...she's not suppose to sound like Chaka Khan bc she's Erykah Badu....a cover means expressing the song you like it....while also giving homage to the original artists. Sure Erykah hit higher notes...ok given. Chaka khan has her own range as well. It's not about competition.

Erykah is one of the few who can sing a Chaka song and do it justice and she's in that elite group of serious singers. She ain't Chaka..but who the hell is ya know? But, here;s the point I was trying to make- Chaka is a once is lifetime songtress and they just didn't measure covering her signature songs. I would have said the same things about Chaka if she covered an Ella Fitzgerald songs- she'd likely come up short

Not I did not say she surpassed Chaka Khan(the legacy) but she did vocally on this particular song. People are afraid to admit because it's Chaka Khan. Erykah is the only person of this generation who could sing this song and it fits her voice.

rufus317, you can't possibly be serious. I love Erykah and I'm not going to say one thing bad about her. She's one of the few artist out now that i spend money for their music. Chaka is nearly 60, now go back 30 years, there are few singers that could possess the range of Chaka and erykah's not one of them. Chaka's range is complex and only in Erykah's dreams can she do what Chaka has done vocally. That goes for just about all these new females singers.

It is an effort for Erica, all head voice. She can stand toe to toe with the " voice" , CHAKA'S voice is has soo much depth she'd drown next to her. CHAKA IS MY FAVORITE, but, Erica ..and Chaka are not the technically highest belters..European and Latin Americans claim that title.

Erykah is a quality performer of substance but it is absurd to actually type that she could surpass Chaka Khan. CK has been hittin "Stay" notes for 30+ years and that isn't her most difficult song. Please listen to CK's live Stay from 2002 if you are serious and not telling jokes.

I took no offense, its just when you come to a Chaka video and post comments like "she's [Erykah] a singer and Chaka is a holler..we defend Chaka. Why because Erykah has crafted a style of singing that draws from Billie, Diana and most of all Chaka. And just because she hits a higher note (on a song that Chaka has sung in her high, low and middle registers in fresh versions almost each time) does not make Erykah better..only higher.

There is no question about Chaka's vocal range. Just look at her body of work of over 30+ years. She still performs! Her range is dynamic, powerful to say the least.
