Yes it is. Our 'switchers' tend to be smaller than those in the US and are gradually falling out of favour as switching is increasingly being carried out by the 'normal' locos. One or two US switching locos have found their way over here for use in private yards.
Lovely sounds. I have one Bachmann 08 fitted with the SWD sound unit. Very impressive. All my Hornby 08's/09's have factory fitted sound units. Pretty good.
I'm not sure which accessories you're referring to, but the ballast is just OO gauge ballast on top of several layers of thick card cut to shape to form the gentle heaps. Pour the ballast over so you can't see any card and them fix with your favourite method, eg diluted PVA or Johnsons Klear.
How about a brake van coupled to the 08? I remember seeing 08 900 as the station pilot at Bristol TM in the late 70s with a brake van attached to it. Apparently, the 08 on its own is too short to show up on track signalling circuits, so it has to have something attached to it. Plenty of room in a brake van for a speaker, and you could run the wires from the 08 to sthe speakers as 'air pipes'.
Thanks! I do like departmental stock. The heaps of ballast are dead easy; a bed of thick card, then cut out 3 ovals of the card and stick them on, then 3 slightly smaller ovals and stick them on top of the first 3. Let the whole thing dry then cover with ballast and wet with Johnsons Klear or dilute PVA. The Shark is from the Cambrian kit, completed just before Hornby released theirs. Doah!
i herd you do custom sound reblows if this is corect can i get a price on geting my class 31 dcc sound reblown it is in hornby dcc sound so lok sound but am wanting better sounds on the chip maybee howes or swd put on to the chip thx nice 08
@TestValleyRailway I haven't tried an amp because volume isn't the problem. The problem is lack of bass because of the severe limitation on speaker size.
@infernodood3 Indeed it is, but not only that, you can have them randomly letting off air, popping or ticking or making any other sound they normally do when left idling in a siding or whatever.
very interested in the Terbert. I had a go at scratchbuilding one from and old tri-ang carflat underframe (cut and shuv) and plasticard. It looks OK and cost just a couple of pounds to make.
@smleonard55 The Turbots are Cambrian kits with A1 etched bogie frames for improved running. The loads are made from several layers of thick card cut into appropriate shapes and ballasted in the normal way.
@petebevan It's a Loksound v3.5 16Mb chip by ESU (a HO version; I tried a Loksound Micro and the sound was very poor in comparison even with the same sounds loaded onto it).

could i ask where you got the accessories for your trucks ??
SQuo4life 3 months ago
I had thought about something like that but I've never heard of 08's running with match trucks, only 03's.

Did you try an amp? Or does that just make the speaker crack?

I had thought of that but no, they don't normally use them these days.

Just a thought - Do modern shunters ever have a shunters waggon like in the old days and if so could you put a decent speaker in the tool box.

is it possible with dcc sound to leave trains sound running so like the engine running in a siding?
