  • 2:12 That beat is so relax'n....I closed my eyes and pictured me and my girl on a cruise just looking out at the beautiful blue water and when u stopped it I realized I was back in our bedroom....DAMMIT...lol

  • Yeah, I heard something that could be better. The horn sound. . .the single note (the flat) would be better if it were at a lower velocity.

Love your tutorials by the way.

  • Whoops, boobies...

  • Thanks for not talkin to me like i have absolutely no idea whats goin on and keepin ur vids straightforward and to the point, im guna subscribe keep up the good work

  • Bravo! Straight to the point without getting lost in tangential 'tech or theory bird-walks'!

  • This is the first tutorial series I've found that gets straight to the damned point and tells me something interesting. Bravo.

Please make more of these, because they're very helpful and compelling.

  • Dude.... thanx for the advice Ace. EQUO, some good shit

  • AcePincter great tut. I just have a question. When using the analyzer is your goal to get the middle line to stay centered? I'm a bit confused.

  • SOunds bad ass, I would just have some of the bells fade in and out.

  • well you asked for a feedback, here it is: the song is very good, but the trumpet synth has a very annoying delay that messes up with the other instruments from the same frequency (in case the windchimes)

  • Thank you so much for showing me that Split by Channel feature it's exactly what I needed. also I'd really like to know what instrument (VSTi, soundfont, or what) you used for the trumpet and what effects did you put on it

  • I think the fade in should be more gradual. I like this it sounds like a Dre piece. I think the 3 note bell sound should be changed to better instrument.

  • i think the belly stuff is a lil bit too "sharp" also the delay is lil bit too much or not the perfect delay/echo vst... but it sounds great !

  • amazing good mastring

  • how do you get that blue pop up that tells you the frequencies you should change?

  • My Man.. Build one pattern and than split tracks by another patterns :)

  • Even thought the song is based on synth instruments, I recommend you sample a trumpet from a recording, I suggest Al Hirt. He solely bases his music on the trumpet and it would be a cake walk to find something that catches your ear. Just a suggestion.

  • Just for your Soundsample:

I think a dropping bass would fit that very well at the beginning of pattern one...

I just don't know how to do that, could you give a tut on that too?

  • great lesson brother.

  • I know this is more than a year old, but I have to point a a major flaw I've noticed when I compare the sound to the E.Q. in the video. You used a web cam mic, didn't you? I can't review a song through that thing. You should splice the audio into the vid, though, no doubt you probably know that by now.

  • @manictiger He recorded the audio internally through the soundcard.

  • Maybe he compressed it heavily, idk, but it sounds "off". I know exactly what a bass drum "should" sound like and I have a very nice sound system correctly set up, so I know it's not a problem on my end. I like his stuff, but I can't review this song (atleast based on instrumentation), because something isn't right about the mastering. It could be he needed more kick and less bass, but idk, that's his discretion.

  • @manictiger Don't forget that no matter how good your system is, you're still listening to it through youtube. I've got a good monitor setup, but still... You can only make turds look so much like chocolate, you know? ;)

  • Yeah, it could be from the compression they used in 08. Weird; usually it was distorted instruments that would act up with the old compression scheme, not normal ones.

  • Sounds like you've got a low cut on the sax/trumpet at about 2.55, doesn't sound right to me. Would sound really good if you brought the sax/trumpet back in along with the icicle effect on 3.05 . love it though, very nice

  • kick drum its not doing it for me

  • oops boobies @ 9:10 had me laughing my ass off. Thanks for the videos, they are a great help to me.

  • lacks live feeling seems to "fake" lacks any feeling that's the problem with scientific music no feeling

  • This can be fixed simply by unquantizing notes a little. Dragging midi notes a little of tempo my moving them foward or backwards. This works wonders!

  • great tut thanks

  • thanks for technique!

  • THIS is EXACTLY how I compose my music. :) Work with one or two patterns and then build up to it. It works wonders.

  • How effective is this method?

  • Was stoned the feeling you were going for with this song?

cause if it is good job

  • Thanks.Very helpful.

  • did wisp use FL for 'the shimmering hour'

    ?

  • again: your tutorials are really helpful...

  • thanks! one question how do you get that fade effect into your song?

  • High light the end of you track, Go to the master level right click it. Go to create automation. If you have FL Studio 8 its going to be at the top of your play list. Bring it down got to the end of your track and place the automation clip the play your track. It will automatically fade out.

  • Dam you're helpful lol. Thanks.

  • dude i really love this beat. nothing is wrong with it!!

  • 7:46 burp!

  • although a frequency analyzer can be great for sub bass and resonant frequencies, it shouldnt be relied on for mixing your track. use your ears.

  • my favourite tutorial so far, learnt a lot and gonna put it into practice.

(apparently if you want to post longer videos you can change your youtube channel settings to "director".....giving you unlimited time to explain all this stuff)

    =D

  • gr8t tip using split by channel in the playlist

next time i dont need to rename

each channel when i bring my sounds

    into the playlist!

  • u got generally too much hi end sounds. cut some on master track. 8k-> 16000. And that open hihat / clap was too loud. also u should try pan percussions. Use the stereo image.

  • Maybe it's youtube?

  • The beginning is a can be a little louder. But for the rest it's great!

  • Dats new news to me way better than copying and pasting over and over and deleting.

  • really usefull, i'll test this out later.

also, that tune your workin on is sounding good, id like to hear it finished ;D.

  • 2:29 has something wrong with a delay I think.

  • nice...this will help me a lot when im mixing...thanks

  • Why when subcribing to your videos they are not listed on your video page?

  • i now wot u mean gota get used to hearing a repetative riff overagain.. like when im tweaking a bass sound at ferst when sound is shit. does my head in.

just cus ur master eq says somink dont work doesnt mean it will sound beter by changing it that way .. itsnot bout folloing rules, i thik its the oposite m8 u no braeaking them i just play it by ear however eq is so iportant.when i learnt to use it just changed my sound qulity totally now i eq as i go along not just at the end.

    nice song

  • The middle thing is kinda loud, dunno though, utube quality :P U know bout drum and bass? Pendulum, aphex twin, teebee just to mention a few dnb artists. U should check em out, thanks for this tutorial goddamn, seems odd that I'm not familiar to this by now :O

  • boobies :D 9:09

  • why are so many of your videos unavailable now? it seems like youtube is doing this to so many videos. i really enjoy the FL tutorials of yours that i have seen, would love to see more.

  • I think your pattern has it all, :D

Thanks for letting me know about split by channel.

    Really helpfull

  • again, very nice. keep up the good tutorials.

was that the sytrus trumpet patch? i agree a bit with roup123 where a less bright instrument would be better and if its sytrus, you can just change the patch some more an it'll be fine.

  • lose the trumpet completely it does not work, maybe if you had an english horn with a flanger on it that would probably sound a lot better

  • it's a tutorial

  • Ace, just my personal opinion. I think it sounds a little thin. You know what I mean ? It needs some beef. No extra instruments or anything just beef it up.

  • Interesting piece, although the begining sound a bit too much towards the'trebular' persuation of the spectrum... maybe try moving the master EQUO more toward the left, whilst not comprimising the depth/layering of the track.

  • ace, how do you use your mic and record fl studio sounds at the same time, i have a unregisterd hypecam and i cant figure it out!!! its kind of frustrating, i can either only talk if i record or hear the cpu sounds, never both at the same time, im lost =[

  • you can always get something else with a recorder, like most mp3 players or phones. then when u put the video together, just sync the recorded audio with the video.

  • man your music is off the hook!....can u make a tutorial on controlling the volume with an evelope controller

  • OMG! I've been using FL since V5, and I haven't noticed that "Split By Channel" option.

I make most of my tracks in this style (focussing on just a short loop and really engineering the sounds, I make alot of techy music so my focus is more on engaging sounds rather than arrangment) and have been manually copy/pasting for all that time.

    Thanks for another great video.

  • yeah split by channel is a great feature... don't use FL without it

  • does fl v5 have this feature?

  • at like 2:34 the resonance is way too high, thats pretty annoying

  • Thanks. I've re-EQed based on my feedback and speaker bias. Should I repost with better sound?

  • sure......

i think u shuld post a tutorial about wat u just said about the speaker bias and the feedback....

the only thing i got was EQ

  • yeah i'd love to hear the update!

  • @AcePincter yea

  • nice tutorial, really what i needed, my biggest problem is arranging :) just about where the trumpet goes in it hurts in my ear

:( (the high sounds) but other allready commented that so :) thanks for it!

  • aCEpINTER YOU ARE DOING A GOOD JOB SHOWING US WHAT THAT ANALYZE IS FOR...can you do a tutorial fully based on it with some examples

  • YouTube keeps filtering out my URL :-P.

Anyways... You rock man! This is the sound I'm working with using your two-bar technique (be creative to figure out the URL :-P) bleedstupid DIZZLE com SLIZZLE demo SLAPPY two_bars_demo DOPE mp3

  • I like it! It sounds like victory. It would be the perfect sound for when you beat a level in a video game.

  • The plucky hi-end synths is a little loud and the volume should be lowered slightly so that the mix doesn't get overloaded by the synthy thing at the high octives. Good luck with your composition.

  • Thanks! I think I found the problem - I ran the sound through an "analyze" mode EQUO twice, not once. My mix sounds more stable now, but unfortunately I can't update the video. Thanks all for the feedback.

  • Well keep me updated AcePincter. Like yourself, I use FL 8, as well as Reason 3 and Live Lite to compose music on. I have four main systems to listen to my compositions on:

    1. Main monitors (overall mix)

    2. Monitor headphones (good for getting a good low-end bass)

    3. iPod with Sharp earphones (good for listening on typical setups)

    4. Listening on my car audio system (connect iPod to car audio)

I always find something I don't like, make a note of it, and correct it. Keep the videos coming.

  • O Yah,i think the bass is off tune

  • It is! I am using a 3rd interval for the bassline, and it ended up being quite tricky to setup. every note has its own pitch adjustment! If I used a 4th or 5th interval it would be easy, but the mid-range freqs on the bass didn't come out.

  • I like the song. :)

Only thing that should be fixed in my opinion are high freq. They are bit louder and thats why is little harder to listen the song. Everything else is kool. And yeah, the bass drum kick should be louder.

    Peace.

  • Thanks! I will re-evaluate this and see if I can do it with a soft EQ.

  • I agree. The highs sound a little too loud(the bell sounds) but all in all I like it!!

  • over all it sounded great considering you did it on software

  • nice song i like the beginning

but the bass seems out of tune and at the second time it repeats the note is wrong...

it should be a half step down, I think... unless i can't hear it because it is too low...

  • i don't know if it's your mix (i doubt) or the compression that youtube use but the high band seemed over powering(contary to the eq on your app)and there was no definition on the lows.

    everyone loves boobies

the idea of 'subtractive' sequencing is bankable as far as i'm concerned.

i think the delay/reverb a bit out of time(i'm used to steps) i tend not to use synth brass because its too synthy

    nice work

    laters potatoes

  • It's in 3/4 time, might cause some of the confusion in steps.

  • I'm renaming my video in your honor! Good word usage!

Also, about the high-band frequencies, I often notice my high-band is far too loud when I make a CD for a long drive. I think it may be the differences in our speaker setup. Thanks for the comment.

  • brass is often too "synthy" but I've found some clever ways to make it quite realistic. using a envelope controlled bandpass makes a good "muffler" sound, and using the pitch bend wheel with a sharp adjustment on the beat makes it seem like the player's lungs are keeping time as well. We should discuss this further!

  • one of my favorite 'old school' analog patches is the good old campy trumpet.. like the first song on shine on you crazy diamond or whatever the name of the album that had that song was... they sound so eerie and emotive, i think maybe moreso than real trumpets because of the cold electronic feel to it

  • Love that song... The vocals don't come in until something like 8:01 I remember.

  • where do you normally place your songs? i am very eager to listen to some of them

  • myjonesmusic - click on my "website" url on my front page! Thanks!

  • you have some beautiful music waiting for some exposure in there!
