do do professional work with photos and movies, you need specialist displays, not Mac displays. A pro display for vid and still photography start at around 4 grand

Of course they don't design the panels, they decide what panels to use, they design the ergonomics, aesthetics, decide what ports to use, what hardware to put in there, etc. Then they put them together, whether by Apple or other companies. Point is, Apple makes the decisions and then they get Foxconn or whoever to manufacture it. Or they may source the panels from other companies if the panel THEY WANT exists already.

What is weird is that Apple displays look really good and Macs in general. But Macs have a 1.5 gamma unlike all others have 2.2 gamma. Which is a problem only when you do a lot with photography and upload pictures to the internet because when you upload pictures form a Mac they get washed out if you don't change the setting when you edit them. Web browsers use the same 2.2 gamma as the other operating systems do because Macs are the only ones that use 1.5. It makes no since. lol
Incorrect. The *MacOS* until SL used 1.5 gamma while SL uses 2.2 gamma (see Mac OS X v10.6: About gamma 2.2 at the support section of Apple's own web site). SO a Mac will display the SAME gamma on a Mac monitor as a PC so that Dell monitor is trying to process 1.5 gamma and doing a crappy job of it. Sheesh.

Apple monitors are overpriced, but not nearly as much as people believe them to be. An Apple Cinema Display instantly outclasses some shitty TN panel for $300 or so, but Dell does offer some high quality IPS and S-PVA displays that have very high color accuracy and a wide color gamut. You can't buy the cheapest shit and compare it to a quality product. You have to buy quality products from both.
I noticed the same thing when i hooked up the 19 inch LCD monitor from my old PC to my iMac and it wasn't until i could move an image between the two that i could really notice the difference.

I know retard, my moms a nurse practitioner, I think that beats your unfinished life science course. FYI, CRTs are a refreshing/strobing light, and we looked into it and indeed, a strobe light/monitor at 40-60hz will give me a seizure.
Apple displays aren't for uber response times, they're for accurate colour representation for professional work such as graphic design, video editing, web design and so on. The SONY and Samsung ones are for watching videos and playing games, hence the response time and more vibrant colours. They're not made for proper colour work.

Sony and samsung is gud for movies and TVs, consumer stuff, but not for pros. Yes they have high RT, and CR, but color gamuts are not as high and accurate, Consumer panels are made from TN panel technology, which is gud at giving high CR, and RT but color gamut isnt as high and viewing angles are bad, pro panels use IPS
Plasmas are the best for color gamut. But mostly, consumers don't care about that type of shit. They just want something to view. And the New Samsung LED TV's are sharper than ever. The true next gen technology lies in OLED's Those pretty much destroy anything anyone's got.

emeek you have to buy monitors with high responsetime if you want colour quality. Apple displays have usually 14 ms. Less ms on the other hand is better for gaming and helps to lower the tearing.
Agreed. I bought a viewsonic a couple of months back primarily for gaming, because it had 6ms response time, but was very disappointed with its performance as a pc monitor.
Did you calibrate the damn monitor? I mean, they probably pre-calibrate the Apple monitors out of the factory, but if you're doing 'professional' work you should have a hardware monitor calibrator, or at least know how to calibrate your monitors so that they at least look similar.
i dont do work at home that requires color correction thats precise. Yes they are calibrated.. My work has a broadcast monitor we use so I have no need at home.
Crap displays are just that, crap. It doesn't matter how long or how well you calibrate them, if you get a cheap display like that it's just not going to be anywhere good enough for professional colour work, the colours just aren't true to life enough. That's why the pro displays from HP, Dell, Samsung and so on all cost a lot like the Apple displays, because they're made with a higher colour gamut and sacrifice response time for accurate consistent colour accorss the whole panel.
Dell do good monitors (and in my opinion that's the only good things they do). I don't think they sell the 30" any more. I've not seen them in their config options or on their site at all for a good while. They offer Samsung 30" displays, but no longer their own brandedones. They use the same panels as Apple do anyway for their pro lines so the difference is mostly personal preferance at the end. Although from seeing both in person the Apple displays hold the slight edge in colour accuracy.
They have two different 2560x1600 monitors, I think one's S-PVA and the other is IPS. They may both be IPS though. I just saw them yesterday, so I'm sure they're there. Just check again, from the Accessories page.

Trying to rip off the iSight ... Thats like saying Microsoft Ripped off Apple for using a keyboard (I know that sounds stupid but thats my point) One Display costs $1000 one Display costs $300 Ofcourse their going to be different.
That isn't always as easy as you'd think. Some displays just aren't made for accurate professional colour work, so no matter how much you tinker with the settings it's just not going to give you the results you're after. You need top quality pro displays for proper output, and Apple make some of the best displays for this purpose. HP and Dell have their pro range too which cost roughly the same as the Apple displays, sometimes even more dispite less accurate colour representation.
The reason Macs are so expensive is becasue they require a lot of ram and things for its HD graphics and such a big os so I guess macs are worth the 1000 dollars they cost. ;)

Apple sell some of the highest quality monitors you can buy. They're made for professional work where you need colour representation to be as close to real life as possible to give you the best results. Your getting confused. The Apple monitor is LED BACKLIT which means that instead of using florescent lights (those long ones) to light up the screen it uses LEDs which are similar to the new macbook designs. The LED makes the colors pop more and makes for a brighter less power consuming display.
The ACD of Eric doesn't use LED backlight, just the old CCFL. And about LCD, get your facts straight, they're BOTH LCD displays. Don't confuse backlight with screen technology.
All the solid silver cinema displays are LCD display / TFT active matrix. Only the new glass covered, black rimmed cinema displays are LED. And I agree with jsgiv99, emeek77 should not have expected a non ultrasharp dell monitor to compare with the cinema display.

It's a Dell S2409W - a TN Panel - the Apple Display (IPS I believe) SHOULD look better in all aspects - hands down. *Try* calibrating it - it's a very decent monitor for the price. If you're going to pit 2 monitors against each other - at least get the same base technology before you blast it. Also - looks like he's got the background image stretched on the Dell - should be set to a native resolution of 1920x1080 (which obviously he doesn't know per his comments towards the end there).
Emeek, i may not have payed full attention, but is that Dell monitor an ultrasharp? If so, there is no difference whatsoever. Because, they are the exact same display. All the internal parts are exactly the same, the only difference is more ports on the Dell, and its cheaper.

Apple displays are more expensive because they're IPS. IPS displays are top of the line, have a larger viewing angle, show true colors, and have a better picture. All IPS displays are expensive when compared to TN monitors. That's because they're higher quality.
Dude I would keep looking for a better screen if I were you. I'm a photographer and I feel you on needing proper color. But the Dell screen and others give you so much more realestate.

Did you calibrate it?
My best guess is that you bought a Dell with TN-panel and you compare it with your Apple Display that uses IPS-panel.
If that is the case, you just stepped into a big bowl of salad.
IPS is better for image-editing, because it is more true to color.
TN is cheaper, not as good colourwise, and is not comparable with IPS.
If you take your Apple display and compare it to Dell U2410 (which uses IPS) you would see less difference, if any at all.

What is weird is that Apple displays look really good and Macs in general. But Macs have a 1.5 gamma unlike all others have 2.2 gamma. Which is a problem only when you do a lot with photography and upload pictures to the internet because when you upload pictures form a Mac they get washed out if you don't change the setting when you edit them. Web browsers use the same 2.2 gamma as the other operating systems do because Macs are the only ones that use 1.5. It makes no since. lol

Incorrect. The *MacOS* until SL used 1.5 gamma while SL uses 2.2 gamma (see Mac OS X v10.6: About gamma 2.2 at the support section of Apple's own web site). SO a Mac will display the SAME gamma on a Mac monitor as a PC so that Dell monitor is trying to process 1.5 gamma and doing a crappy job of it. Sheesh.

Oh haha. okay. well I edit pictures and all in photoshop and I have to change the setting to color proof for it to be right when I upload them. But I also have a Mac Mini hooked up to a 42 inch plasma. lol. I have never edited on a Mac display well at least the newer ones. lol and at school I use a tablet instead of Mac display and I have to color proof on it also. So idk. just another thought. lol

I wouldn't go as far as to say Windows is stupid but that it has the same problem as the Classic MacOS did--too much legacy code to be effectively moved forward on it own. Now the multiple system issue THAT I will grant is stupid--it is a needless resource drain as instead of one version MS has to effectively support six.

Apple monitors are overpriced, but not nearly as much as people believe them to be. An Apple Cinema Display instantly outclasses some shitty TN panel for $300 or so, but Dell does offer some high quality IPS and S-PVA displays that have very high color accuracy and a wide color gamut. You can't buy the cheapest shit and compare it to a quality product. You have to buy quality products from both.

how do u know that the screen is the reason to y u had seizures? maybe u just have seizures it might be normal for u, or your not aware of y and how u get it.... i doubt u get seizures cuz of the display, there must be some other reason to why u r getting seizures. Did u visit your family doctor for this? r u on any medication? trust me i am studying life science, and health studies in Uni and i know for a fact that u cant get seizures from viewing any specific display. Apple displays aren't for uber response times, they're for accurate colour representation for professional work such as graphic design, video editing, web design and so on. The SONY and Samsung ones are for watching videos and playing games, hence the response time and more vibrant colours. They're not made for proper colour work.

if u know about profesional monitors, ud know that sony and samsung monitors are not considerd as much as apple cinema display, Eizo, and the ultrasharp dells. Sony and samsung is gud for movies and TVs, consumer stuff, but not for pros. Yes they have high RT, and CR, but color gamuts are not as high and accurate, Consumer panels are made from TN panel technology, which is gud at giving high CR, and RT but color gamut isnt as high and viewing angles are bad, pro panels use IPS

emeek you have to buy monitors with high responsetime if you want colour quality. Apple displays have usually 14 ms. Less ms on the other hand is better for gaming and helps to lower the tearing.

Did you calibrate the damn monitor? I mean, they probably pre-calibrate the Apple monitors out of the factory, but if you're doing 'professional' work you should have a hardware monitor calibrator, or at least know how to calibrate your monitors so that they at least look similar.

Crap displays are just that, crap. It doesn't matter how long or how well you calibrate them, if you get a cheap display like that it's just not going to be anywhere good enough for professional colour work, the colours just aren't true to life enough. That's why the pro displays from HP, Dell, Samsung and so on all cost a lot like the Apple displays, because they're made with a higher colour gamut and sacrifice response time for accurate consistent colour accorss the whole panel.

Dell do good monitors (and in my opinion that's the only good things they do). I don't think they sell the 30" any more. I've not seen them in their config options or on their site at all for a good while. They offer Samsung 30" displays, but no longer their own brandedones. They use the same panels as Apple do anyway for their pro lines so the difference is mostly personal preferance at the end. Although from seeing both in person the Apple displays hold the slight edge in colour accuracy.

That isn't always as easy as you'd think. Some displays just aren't made for accurate professional colour work, so no matter how much you tinker with the settings it's just not going to give you the results you're after. You need top quality pro displays for proper output, and Apple make some of the best displays for this purpose. HP and Dell have their pro range too which cost roughly the same as the Apple displays, sometimes even more dispite less accurate colour representation.

They're made for professional work where you need colour representation to be as close to real life as possible to give you the best results. If you get an equally good display from other vendors you'll spend about as much as getting an Apple one anyway.

Your getting confused. The Apple monitor is LED BACKLIT which means that instead of using florescent lights (those long ones) to light up the screen it uses LEDs which are similar to the new macbook designs. The LED makes the colors pop more and makes for a brighter less power consuming display.

All the solid silver cinema displays are LCD display / TFT active matrix. Only the new glass covered, black rimmed cinema displays are LED. And I agree with jsgiv99, emeek77 should not have expected a non ultrasharp dell monitor to compare with the cinema display.

It's a Dell S2409W - a TN Panel - the Apple Display (IPS I believe) SHOULD look better in all aspects - hands down. *Try* calibrating it - it's a very decent monitor for the price. If you're going to pit 2 monitors against each other - at least get the same base technology before you blast it. Also - looks like he's got the background image stretched on the Dell - should be set to a native resolution of 1920x1080 (which obviously he doesn't know per his comments towards the end there).

Apple displays are more expensive because they're IPS. IPS displays are top of the line, have a larger viewing angle, show true colors, and have a better picture. All IPS displays are expensive when compared to TN monitors. That's because they're higher quality.
