You can't just touch the sodium acetate to activate it . A more reliable method is adding a already solid piece of sodium acetate

Add as much sodium acetate into the water as you can. keep adding it to the water until it will no longer disolve into the water. I would use about 1/2-1 cup of water to start out with, but it is your choice.

Oh, and if it doesn't work, DON'T THROW IT AWAY!!! The solution can always be reheated or reboiled to perfect it. You can always remelt the final product too. So don't throw it away.

yes you can make the soduim acetate by having a viniger and baking soda solution then boiling it down and cooling it to room temp. then get rid of the moisture and you will have a lot of fine grains of sodium acetate
