A little confused. Sometimes on subtitles I see numbers written as "1, 2, 3, 4, etc." along with chinese characters. But why write the numbers if numbers have there own characters? I'm a newbie, sorry.

That is the personal choice of the person doing the subtitling. There is no hard and fast rule per say as those numerals are internationally known. Sometimes English punctuations are used in Chinese subtitles as well, it's the subtitle writer's choice.
