It is a celebration of freedom, love, and sex--from which people were born, no matter whether they were folks in the Baroque era or 21th century.
The dancer in black, I think, represents the more sober side of human nature, whereas the one in yellow pants embodies the playful side. Before genuine love happens, people have to go through courtships, thus the three pair of dancers dancing (to find out whether they could be in sync).
I watched the DVD several times as if I was reading a good book, connecting words with images in it. Atis enters the stage looking up at the clouds with a sense of wonder and the lyrics of the aria mention "signs of liberty." The slow dance movements between Atis and Argie suggest the the elusiveness as well as freedom of love. (Notice that they slip out of each others' arms/control at times.)
At one point of this clip, a version of the Garden of Eden appears, in which nude people frolic like children while animals and human beings get along pretty well (the lion does not try to hurt people and vice versa.
Compare this clip with the one in which an innocent person is forced to tame the lion by sitting on him, you will see that when Orcane (symbolized by the beast) makes unwelcome advances at Piau's character, the paradise is lost.

It is a celebration of bad taste. Of the usual attempt to appeal to the masses who, it is believed, are too stupid to appreciate the music, plot, etc, for what it is, so we have to dumb it down in the pretense that it is a celebration of "freedom," "love," "sex," from which people were born.
LazlosPlane: You sure have posted a lot of the same nonsensical ignorance on the other clips. I'm beginning to wonder why you've decided to waste your time watching something you consider "bad taste." I'm beginning to wonder why you haven't turned your computer off to mind the stick up your butt already. Such a high-brow aesthete as yourself shouldn't have so much time to waste on "bad taste."
I'd rather stick with the masses, sit back, and enjoy what I'm seeing here. Deal with it.
One more thing, I suppose that I and all those who enjoy this piece are truly too stupid to appreciate "music, plot, etc." After all, with just a doctorate in musicology under my belt and having performed with a couple of reputable ensembles and conductors, I'm sure you have MUCH to teach someone like me about what "music, plot, etc." are SUPPOSED to be. Until then, I know I'm not the only one who thinks your comments are either pseudointellectual, bigoted, ignorant, or a mix of all three.
This production, as a whole, renews my faith in humanity.

Aesthetics worthy of the second grade.
Gimme a break.
