thats is a wounderful layout you did a great job on it i like the cab-forward engines but it will be some time before i get my hands on one of those engine i sent alot of money this year picking up lionel postwar sets those are fun to run and i like working on them and restoreing them back and given them a 2nd chance on the rails with a much better owner me lol : ]
Three rails offered Lionel some advantages. Easier to do reverse loops, easier to operate accessories like crossing gates and easier to manufacture trains with out insulating axles.
Since I was a little kid, I've never been able to get over the fact that Lionel trains have three rails. Not realistic or authentic at all. This has kept me from wanting a Lionel train period. To me it is ABOUT being real. I've never seen a real train track with three rails.
I'm talking about in the 1950's and 60's, fwiw. I inherited an American Flyer Train set from my older brother (two rails).
I can't help but wonder what the designers were thinking when they decided to use the three rail tracks. Apparently, at the time they could have made it work with two -- American Flyer did. ???
It sort of defeats the point of a model reflecting reality.
But they ARE awesome. I would love to have a train setup like this... but preferable with two tracks. ;)
i recently purchased te norfolk and westeren and southern pacific and the union pacific challenger and they are impressive compared to my 4-8-4 reading
No, this layout is in a volunteer fire company. I designed it and did most of the work on it. The long train for the most part is mine. The engine and 50 cars I took over to see how long of a train could be pulled by a single engine on O-84 curves. After we used all of my cars we did use some of the fire companies rolling stock that was not being used.

akrond 3 years ago
The hot air balloons are made by Lionel #24177 Hot Air Balloon Ride. Which is a set of 2 balloons, as one goes up the other one comes down

High speed Euro Trains use a thrid rail (TGV), and so do a lot of other railroads that use electric engines. Subways have a thrid way.
CommanderCody87 4 years ago
The third rail is off to side placed on ceramic insulators. totally different than a Lionel track set-up.

Not realistic yes, but it is a toy and the tin plate track makes it what it is. But each to his own they are however a whole lot of fun
