WOW! That guy moved his foot just in time! Thanks for these my dad was also in the Fleet Air Arm and also did his last trip on HMS Eagle, Although I think it was before this.
Having played drums on this clip, we were a bit dissapointed with finished article. We did however get a recording contract in Singers where acoustics were MUCH better.
great video and music and tattoos! I was lucky to visit Eagle when she was at Istanbul in 1958...made a friend and we've visited them often in Wilts...
very good video, i was on both eagle and ark, the last commissions, eagle was by far the best, ark was well knackered, mind you when we ran aground on the eagle it did it no favours
That is one catchy clip of music!! and that was one AWESOME aircraft carrier.HMS EAGLE R05 not forgotten. I can't stop playing the clip....great stuff.
This is such a cool video!!!! I was living in Durban, South Africa when the HMS Eagle berthed in Durban - 22nd December 1971 through to 4th January 1972. I think that was the last tour of duty before being sent off to that great big scrapyard in the sky. What a shame!!! Anyway, Durban gave the guys an incredible welcome after spending about 57 days at sea!! I live in the US now but would love some news of the HMS Eagle, particularly video footage around 1970 - 1972.
I was serving on board Eagle when we visited Durban, Eagle was the best ship I ever served on. I was a Junior Radio Operator and served until the very last minute! I have some 8mm cine film which I hope to transfer to DVD at some stage. It brought back so many fantastic memory's watching this film.
If you ever get that film transfered to DVD, I would love a copy!! I have a couple of pics from the Durban visit and a friend of mine in South Africa still has quite a lot of photos... she says even some sketches I did at the time. Will have to make contact with her and get her to go through her 'archives'.. ha! I found some links to newsletters around that time - will send you the links.
ahh if you were around at the time maybe you can confirm that Eagle had more service life left in her than ark royal when she was decommissioned in 1972 and if the decision to phantomise her instead of Ark Royal had been made it would have been likely to have seen Eagle serving well into the 80's?
that would be an alternative history lesson, RN wouldn't have given up conventional carriers if they'd had one in 1982.
I really am surprised none of you old salts bit at my last posting ... I was on board HMS GALATEA at this time having just left HMS Ganges .. great guys great service good video

I wonder if my father was on the ship while this was being filmed? He would have only been 18 at the time...
