Its Gene Hunt....Why dont they complain about every episode of Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes when hey makes racist and sexist remarks 100 times worse than this?
Its the brilliance of the character...and the sex appeal :)
In case anyone's curious, 0:18 is filmed at the fabulous Canary Wharf Jubilee line underground station (East London/E14) and 0:22 is filmed outside at Canary Wharf at West India Quay. There are some great restaurants along the quay and you can sit outside in summer. Can't wait to go there again!
Well done M & S for sticking it to the P.C. people and making their latest ad the most talkabout ever, encourging more people through their doors. M & S are the bigger winners as well as the non-P.C. people out there. And of course us men to see that babe in her underwear and it wouldn't bother me if it was Stephen Fry in his underwear but I bet it wouldn't have got as much attendition.
I think Stephen Fry dancing around in lingerie would have got much more attention....
Thing is though, you know the thought 'we're sticking it to PC, people will love that' was exactly what went through the heads of the creators of this advert. It's all a very cynical attempt to make you think M and S is on your side, shares your views. The rest of the advert is just as patronising and PC as anything else on telly, didn't you notice?
LOL @ the losers who complained that this is sexist because it has a women in her underwear. What's the matter girls, jealous that you don't look like her? It's ok to have guys half-naked covered in women's rags, but shock-horror at the same being done with a girl. Guess what ladies, it's called equality. You're offended? well so bloody what. get a life.
Ah now see this is where your point weavers slightly. I'm all for equality and what not. But i'm going to disregard your nonsense about being jealous we don't look like a lingerie model. Because i'm pretty sure the reason she looks so lovely is because it's her job to look so lovely.
And this is the 21st century men and women tend to prance around telly with nothing but shreds of fabric on, but sex sells.
OMG!!! Stephen Fry, Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley and Wallace and Gromit all in one advert?!! Aaaahhh! *poof* (spontaneously combusts from sheer joy)
To all the people complaining about the fact that there's a woman in her underwear; grow up. I wonder if you complain about the Kinder Bueno adverts where a woman steals a man's clothes and he has to exit a sauna naked? Or how about the other one, where a woman drops something and she and her friend stares at his bottom? Or how about the Aero advert that features a shirtless man talking seductively? Or ANY Diet Coke advert.
And THAT'S just objectification. Men have it worse in adverts.
It's only demeaning against women if you LET it be. Why is someone in lingerie looked upon as gratuitous, when worn by a women. Because, because the person thinks it is. Talk about double standards. -.- This is just ONE woman.
wow people are really pathetic, so what if he has used mincing as mincing around because he is gay, or stuffing your face assuming you get fat on christmas, or skitting grannies jumpers, or getting a half naked girl for xmas, get over it , ITS FUNNY!
@viabetty1912 M&S have stopped showing this ad. Absolute madness the world has gone mad. I never got the mincing bit, but I do now I have read your post. No way would M&S have even thought about that reference. Its an advert, thats it, and I wish the PC people in this world would build a bridge and get over it.
ahh people are gonna piss me off if they complain about this advert, do they have nothing else to do tbh, i had to watch it three times to really find if their was a slight issue with it? she is iconic for being on the marks and spencers ads, get over it you boring people who have nothing else better to do except complain about a non offensive advert!
The lady in the panties is "iconic" NOW because of the fuss they created with the original tacky shoot. Cynical attempt at viral marketing? No idea, sorry.
I've seen some sexist adverts in my time, in the past towards women, nowadays more towards men, but this is honest, fun and not in the least bit sexist. ridiculous bussiness complaining about it. your kids see more at 9 am on billboards in the town center. (:
I've seen some sexist adverts in my time, in the past towards women, nowadays towards men... but this is not sexist! it's fun. nothing wrong with it. plus it's honest. kids see worse on billboards at 9 am in the morning in your town center. (:
I'm definitely keeping my kids off the beach next year, or taking them to the swimming pool, just in case they catch a glimpse of a woman in a bikini.
I don't see why they're complaining about this advert, she's not completely naked and it's not rude. That girl is in her undies in all of the xmas adverts, suddenly it's offensive? That's the Daily mail crew for you. Even more stupid is the people complaining about the Saunders and Lumley 'stuffing your face' bit.
Wow its just advert! If your offended by a women in her underwear then you must be offended a 100 times per day when your flick through your channels and anyway Noemie Lenoir is goddess-like.

This ad hasn't been taken off ! I just saw it like 5 minutes ago on ITV. Theres nothing wrong with it anyway. All these pc idiots need to get a grip !!!
This ad is great. I LOVE Gene Hunt. He's politically incorrect and these days when the Fun Police govern just about everything we do it's a giggle. I'm a woman. I'm NOT offended about his wish for the girl wearing knickers. M&S are famous for their knickers. Get over it, knockers!! (Ooer, knockers. Rude... must be challenging the Gene Genie)
Oh M&S, another cheap ploy for sales. Sex doesn't always sell. Nor does that fat guy from Ashes to Ashes....Do they really think lower class beer drinking men shop at M&S??? Aim higher next time M&S...
Oh my god, why on earth did they need to put that bit in?? Somebody's head will have rolled for that. I always use the M&S Christmas adverts as an indicator of how Christmas is going to be this year and I've never seen them have to withdraw an advert before... I hope M&S survives Christmas with a profit...
I liked most of the ad. The ad is offensive, it is a Christmas ad about what makes Christmas. If it was about knickers fine. BUT you have all these sweet ideas of stuffing, mince and angels and POOF some lech at a bar with abunch of losers behind him going "ya!" to wanting a girl prancing in her panties. I am not offended by the girl in her panties, she looks good. Its the line that the actor delivers. Women aren't sex objects! And I expect more from M&S. Its just such a cheap ploy for sales!
@olympialetan its Philip Glinister, her plays a copper from the 70s in a tv show. The bit with him doing that is in his character. If you want to see the shows called "Life On Mars" and a sequel series "Ashes to Ashes"
was there not a scene in the last adverts where Naomi was in her underwear? For gods sake this company sell knickers get over it! Mon Wallace and Gromit and the Gene Genie! :D
I am proud to say that I am one of the brave people who complained about this filthy advert. I have worked hard all my life (postman and fishmonger) and I do not want to sit in my lounge with my semi-attractive daughters watching some half naked bint ponce about the place trying to sell me underwear and assorted M&S tat. Shame on you M&S for pumping filth into the faces of the GRAET BRITISH PUBLIC! Did we fight HITLER for THIS? NO WE DID NOT! I shall be doing my Xmas shopping at Aldi!
I don't mean to sound rude, to a certain extent, but you seem like a total idiot. It's hardly filth, whats wrong with seeing someone in their underwear? You walk into a store and see manikins in underwear? It's not indecent by any stretch of the imagination, she didn't get down and start shagging stuart rose at the end of it or something? "The great british public" you make me giggle like a school girl. And your closing comment, GET A LIFE MAYTE. We didn't fight hitler for cheap german meat too.
I could not agree more! Mary Whitehouse must be spinning in her grave. I will also be shopping at Aldi with 93top3 - you will not see Phil Vickery poncing about in a jockstrap to sell his three bird roast.
I take it you'd never go near the beach or a swimming pool for fear of seeing girls in bikinis (a bikini is just waterproof and more abrasive bra and panties). The more ads there are with women in their underwear the better, particularly after them losing their outer garments accidentally (check my uploads and favourites!)
As a bloke who has had it in the neck from a woman for holding a door open (which I do for everyone) AND from a different woman for NOT holding a door open - I hope M&S ignore these PC loons and make more adverts with a sense of humour!
When i heard it was complained about, i expected them to complain about it having Fuck all to do with Christmas i mean they mentioned Mince Pie,Stuffing,Angels,Presents from Grandma then it has that fatass from Ashes to Ashes talking about Girls in Underwear, WTF i never knew people had first thought of that when they heard the word Christmas. Since when is that a Fucking Christmas Tradition.
Of course it doesn't matter about the sexist subtext - it's just a load of saccharine, self-obsessed vomit that won't actually have any influence on our commercialised, hetero-normative society. Lighten up - after all, it is November.
big lols at the being called sexist. otherwise most M&S adverts have semi naked ladies in it for no apart reason other than to show off there cloths. God it the 21st centuary not 19th and early 20th
In regards to the whole 8 people who complained, firstly they obviously don't realise that Philip Glenister is portraying Gene Hunt, a fictional character, just as Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders are.
And secondly, there is always a girl prancing around in her underwear in the M&S ads, how is it sexist to point it out?
Thirdly, these people obviously sit indoors all day hoping to find something to complain about so they have an excuse to make human contact.
Sigh...I fail to see how anyone can truly be offended by this, and other adverts that have nothing wrong with them...I'm sure loads of people complained over something stupid in a KFC advert once :S
Lol when I read there were complaints about sexism on this I went to check it out. But it's harmless :| some people have too much time of their hands...
Oh ffs when will these lily livered light weight no lifers stop pulling the PC card on everything that makes us chuckle. Merry Christmas M&S Well done masses of free PR for this year! As for the Mary Whitehouse club! She's dead you know!
Err and the problem here is? M&S sell lingerie. For the past few years they have featured that actress/model in her underwear, so it is relevant, They sell turkey and beef too, does that mean they shouldn't show that for fear of upsetting veggies? Hate all this P.C. rubbish! Merry Christmas everyone.. Oops I mean Happy Winter festival everyone. x
There are loads of adverts where blokes are portrayed in exactly the same way (Diet Coke ad anyone?) or they are portrayed as clumsy oafs that can't complete the simplest domestic task. Funnily enough in either case no one gives a shit, probably because most people are bright enough to seperate reality and fiction.
The miserable scrotums who complained about this need to lighten up. There is real discrimination going on in the world. This is not an example of it.
This isnt a sexist commercial.......Its traditional for M&S to use Noemie in M&S underwear praning around....Hence the reference made! Lighten up all you do gooders who have reported this advertisement and get a bloody life!
haha its nice to know that when daily mail readers arent slagging off homosexuals and illegal immigrants they find something to do, like complaining about adverts for instance. ....
i am sure like lots of people I have only viewed this advert because it was on the BBC site cause people said they were offended. I think for an advertiser thats a 'job well done lad'!
Every year M&S have a girl in her underwear in the advert...that's what his comment is about. Personally i thought Fry's mince comment would offend more people...I don't think he is talking about pies at all!
Be honest Philip Glenister is in his 'Gene Hunt' role, he is ACTING people, and M&S have done adverts with women in underwear before, and it hasn't, to my knowledge, been bad enough for complaints to be made so what's the problem.
Like the woman in the "Got A Girlfriend" video in your video "favourites"? The one wearing hot pants? Or is it the two women in the same video at (48 seconds) in their underwear?
Note how the bloke uses the woman as a toy while flicking coins into her pants.
Seems like you like complaining about women in underwear but just can't stop looking at them.
I think we can all draw a simple conclusion from this.
The M&S advert is harmless. Gene Hunt is sexist. He's not real.
I'd prance around in my underwear if I had her figure! Seriously have some people nothing better to do with their time. Still, doubt M&S will be complaining the amount of free publicity they've drummed up for them.
what's funny is that no one seems to realise that, regardless of whether or not it is actually sexist, a woman wearing pornographic underwear doesn't actually have any relevance to christmas- they obviously just put her in the ad to get attention.
I guess its pornographic to have a body in your world!
Guess what .... shops actually sell that underwear! Quick burn them to the ground!
Will you all please think of the children!
I for one will never open my eyes in Marks & Spencer just in case I happen to see a pair of y-fronts. I saw a pair of socks in there once and they barely covered the knee!
last time I checked...... M&S.. are a retailer of underwear and therefor SELL underwear..now I may not be too hot when it comes to marketing.. but I'm pretty sure that if I was to sell underwear... I would include that in my adverts... or is that just me......?
M&S Underwear is famous the world over. If M&S chose a more classic underwear and a well fit older model, it would have worked in M&Ss favour , as it stands , it appears to be pandering to the stereotypical , dirty old man + a girl young enough to be his daughter, whilst the intention may have been to encourage old men to buy Christmas gifts for their younger wifes / mistresss at M&S, I have no objection to the advert , apart from the use and connotations of the word CHRIST-mas.
Can anyone tell me what is the piano song behind it? It is so lovely... Please tell me... anyone! Thanks and Happy Christmas :)

93top3 2 years ago
I don't mean to sound rude, to a certain extent, but you seem like a total idiot. It's hardly filth, whats wrong with seeing someone in their underwear? You walk into a store and see manikins in underwear? It's not indecent by any stretch of the imagination, she didn't get down and start shagging stuart rose at the end of it or something? "The great british public" you make me giggle like a school girl. And your closing comment, GET A LIFE MAYTE. We didn't fight hitler for cheap german meat too.

While I respect your opinion, I fail to see what your chosen career path has to do with this!
It's hardly filth either, just underwear. Have you not seen your wife in her underwear, or naked even?

I could not agree more! Mary Whitehouse must be spinning in her grave. I will also be shopping at Aldi with 93top3 - you will not see Phil Vickery poncing about in a jockstrap to sell his three bird roast.

I take it you'd never go near the beach or a swimming pool for fear of seeing girls in bikinis (a bikini is just waterproof and more abrasive bra and panties). The more ads there are with women in their underwear the better, particularly after them losing their outer garments accidentally (check my uploads and favourites!)
deniro2004 2 years ago
As a bloke who has had it in the neck from a woman for holding a door open (which I do for everyone) AND from a different woman for NOT holding a door open - I hope M&S ignore these PC loons and make more adverts with a sense of humour!
HeyMrPresto 2 years ago 6
seriously why would you complain about an advert its 52 seconds long, just get lives LOL
2009RND 2 years ago
When i heard it was complained about, i expected them to complain about it having Fuck all to do with Christmas i mean they mentioned Mince Pie,Stuffing,Angels,Presents from Grandma then it has that fatass from Ashes to Ashes talking about Girls in Underwear, WTF i never knew people had first thought of that when they heard the word Christmas. Since when is that a Fucking Christmas Tradition.
MrThermomanPreacher 2 years ago 7
on the m & s adverts, they advertise underwear every christmas. LIKE THEY DO IN THE NORMAL ADVERTS. so that's what they were talking about.

What a load of vomit inducing crap.
jeffknowler 2 years ago
Of course it doesn't matter about the sexist subtext - it's just a load of saccharine, self-obsessed vomit that won't actually have any influence on our commercialised, hetero-normative society. Lighten up - after all, it is November.

Philip Glenister is the only reason I find this ad funny. Please M+S dont listen to those sad people who complained.
santefering 2 years ago 6
big lols at the being called sexist. otherwise most M&S adverts have semi naked ladies in it for no apart reason other than to show off there cloths. God it the 21st centuary not 19th and early 20th

no offence but people who complain about adverts are flipping tight gits! Lighten up, its a christmas advert after all!
hfranklin96 2 years ago 2
Gene Hunt isn't real? But what about the documentary about time travel he was in?
TheConfusionists 2 years ago
In regards to the whole 8 people who complained, firstly they obviously don't realise that Philip Glenister is portraying Gene Hunt, a fictional character, just as Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders are.
And secondly, there is always a girl prancing around in her underwear in the M&S ads, how is it sexist to point it out?
Thirdly, these people obviously sit indoors all day hoping to find something to complain about so they have an excuse to make human contact.
ThePyjamaPirate 2 years ago
Sigh...I fail to see how anyone can truly be offended by this, and other adverts that have nothing wrong with them...I'm sure loads of people complained over something stupid in a KFC advert once :S

Oh ffs when will these lily livered light weight no lifers stop pulling the PC card on everything that makes us chuckle. Merry Christmas M&S Well done masses of free PR for this year! As for the Mary Whitehouse club! She's dead you know!
pootles111 2 years ago
Err and the problem here is? M&S sell lingerie. For the past few years they have featured that actress/model in her underwear, so it is relevant, They sell turkey and beef too, does that mean they shouldn't show that for fear of upsetting veggies? Hate all this P.C. rubbish! Merry Christmas everyone.. Oops I mean Happy Winter festival everyone. x

Nice little fun advert . no harm done .
When u consider we have apopulation of 65 million and they have had 8 complaints , not bad really
zeymatis 2 years ago
There are loads of adverts where blokes are portrayed in exactly the same way (Diet Coke ad anyone?) or they are portrayed as clumsy oafs that can't complete the simplest domestic task. Funnily enough in either case no one gives a shit, probably because most people are bright enough to seperate reality and fiction.
The miserable scrotums who complained about this need to lighten up. There is real discrimination going on in the world. This is not an example of it.
Penko83 2 years ago 5
This isnt a sexist commercial.......Its traditional for M&S to use Noemie in M&S underwear praning around....Hence the reference made! Lighten up all you do gooders who have reported this advertisement and get a bloody life!

haha its nice to know that when daily mail readers arent slagging off homosexuals and illegal immigrants they find something to do, like complaining about adverts for instance. ....

Omg, sexist??? I WANT to be N.L!! If thats sexist, keep it coming!
Actually someone who is offended please explain why? Am really confused..is it because she's in underwear??

i am sure like lots of people I have only viewed this advert because it was on the BBC site cause people said they were offended. I think for an advertiser thats a 'job well done lad'!
love it btw!

what's so sexist about this advert? It's a lovely christmassy advert :)
XxCrazygal2007xX 2 years ago
have to agree, fry talking about the mince is more offensive, but probably goes over the head of people that would complain anyway :)
goldmercury 2 years ago
why is it ?
aon07 2 years ago
Every year M&S have a girl in her underwear in the advert...that's what his comment is about. Personally i thought Fry's mince comment would offend more people...I don't think he is talking about pies at all!
SparrowLittle 2 years ago
Really? There's outrage over this. I don't think it's that bad. A bit stupid really. Ruins the cosy, sentimental feel of the advert.
renza88 2 years ago
Be honest Philip Glenister is in his 'Gene Hunt' role, he is ACTING people, and M&S have done adverts with women in underwear before, and it hasn't, to my knowledge, been bad enough for complaints to be made so what's the problem.
SLavery125 2 years ago
Surely it'd be more sexist to say that they DIDN'T want to see women?
FrankThePidgeon 2 years ago
you've misunderstood the complaint. we're not bothered about the presence of women in the ad, we're bothered about them being degraded.
33LB 2 years ago
are u the new whitehouse?
Bighairyfart 2 years ago
Like the woman in the "Got A Girlfriend" video in your video "favourites"? The one wearing hot pants? Or is it the two women in the same video at (48 seconds) in their underwear?
Note how the bloke uses the woman as a toy while flicking coins into her pants.
Seems like you like complaining about women in underwear but just can't stop looking at them.
I think we can all draw a simple conclusion from this.
The M&S advert is harmless. Gene Hunt is sexist. He's not real.
neoconhitman 2 years ago 5
I'd prance around in my underwear if I had her figure! Seriously have some people nothing better to do with their time. Still, doubt M&S will be complaining the amount of free publicity they've drummed up for them.
missmp07 2 years ago
and if you had no respect for yourself either.
what's funny is that no one seems to realise that, regardless of whether or not it is actually sexist, a woman wearing pornographic underwear doesn't actually have any relevance to christmas- they obviously just put her in the ad to get attention.
33LB 2 years ago
why are you watching if u find it so sexist?
The model has always advertised underwear for m & s ,and has been in lots of their ads,so whats the big deal on this ad?
Shes a beautiful girl, who obviously will make the sale of their underwears rise up
If u don't like it,then simply DON'T WATCH
don't blame her for the whole advert, just because you have no sense of humour !!!
fenzi08 2 years ago
"pornographic underwear"? oh come on ...
