  • The scale is a follows: A Bb C# Eb E G

That synthetic scale is pretty neat, correct me if I'm wrong with the intervals...

  • 4:28 PWNED

  • MIles Davis taught this same conceptual approach as does Bobby Irving his keyboard player for the old days.

  • @G7flat5 What do you mean conceptual approach?

  • What a guy!

  • Hr is like a guitar Guru

  • that smile at 3:00

    priceless.

  • 3:00 ! that chord he hits during the bass line so awesome

  • Wow he is mortal! Thank you.

  • he really is a musical genius.

  • cool

  • It's the A triad and Eb triad missing the roots. brilliant. I love how Jimmy says "sorry" when he misses his mark, just like me, ahhh!!

  • just like jimmy

  • @steven09566 Hi, yea, Mike Stern does the same thing when he misses too!

  • the guy is a genius .

  • I comped chords for him in that class after bill hart :D

  • do you have an exact tab for this scale?

  • A Bb C# Eb E G

  • thanks, I figured that too - WH... thing, very nice, the thing is how to apply it properly over dominant chord?

  • Well, as Jimmy says, it's basically a diminished scale, but missing a few notes (like a minor pentatonic scale is a minor scale, missing a few notes). You could consider it an A or an Eb half-whole diminished (same scale), and play it over those dominant chords, lending them a little bit of an altered tone... the scale degrees would be root, b9, 3, #11, 5, b7. This would basically imply the sound of a dominant 7 #9 chord with a natural 5th. You could use this over a C or Gb as well. outofroom

  • try it over A7 (b9)

  • thats amazing. jimmy herring is the man. did you play groove bill was playing in the vid, or were you actually comping, like jazz comping?

  • is there a tab on the scale he's playing

    that would be very helpful

  • It's an A triad (A C# E) and an Eb triad (Eb G Bb), so all together, the scale is A Bb C# Eb E G. I can't tab it out in here, so you'll have to figure it out from that.

  • it's a shame that great musicians like jimmy don't get alot of recognition these days...granted, alot of people know he's amazing, but if he were around in the 70's he would be considered the musical overlord of humanity. oh well, get psyched for his solo album in october

  • I knew Jimmy back in high school and had the privilege of jamming with him on many occasions. I can tell you that we all knew Jimmy was way beyond us, even then. Not only is he a phenomenal musician, but he is a great person. He never made me feel as bad as I actually was on the keyboards!

  • 1:43 sounds like the riff from the opening song of project z. this is really incitfull

  • How do i get my strat to sound like his?

  • Looks like he's using humbuckers.

  • Herring is the right combination of clever and soulful.

  • he's the teacher

  • Herring is out of control!

  • MY GOD HE IS JUST AMAZING

  • Hung out with Jimmy in 06 after a Herring Rogers, Sipe show in Va beach. He was the most laid back, non ego having guy on the planet. Bobby Lee Rogers was no joke either, It was like seeing two music wizards in a club that held 200 people , front row.

I actually have a copy of the show on disc.

    Epic...

  • The cat playing rhythm sounds flat.

  • the guy playing rhythm is Bill Hart, he's a teacher at my school, you should check out some of his solo stuff, its actually kinda cool

  • yeh jimmy herring is one of the most complete guitarist out there and to me the most complete hes just fucking rediculous he makes me practice hours one end and theres really no catching up with him

  • typical guitarist always practicing even at a clinic;)

  • show me a better guitarist than herring.

  • He's the master of guitar improvisation if u ask me. His picking technique is to die for, it looks even smoother than Steve Morse's(If thats possible.)

  • Steve Morse actually has had very favorable things to say about JHerring. In a print interview with John Petrucci, both guitarists are asked about current players they admire. Morse volunteers JHerring, describing him as a player who, "...doesn't have any holes in his playing." Actually, I can hear some Steve Morse influence in Herring's playing. He's a baaaad man.

  • Yeah I remember reading that article too. Also, in a fairly recent issue of Guitar One, (the Jam Issue, with Warren Haynes and Trey Anastasio) Herring decribes his favorite album, artist, and song. "What If" by the Dixie Dregs (Steve Morse) was his favorite album, Jan Hammer (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jeff Beck) was his favorite artist, and "Protocol" by John Scofield is one of his favorite songs.

  • Shawn Lane

  • maybe mike stern? i dunno they're both good

  • Who the hell here thinks they can outplay Bill Hart (the guy accompanying him)?? I was also at this class and Bill is one of my favorite players. It's really hard to distinguish tone from a home movie taken in a classroom. God!! what morons

  • Umm you obviously don't know who Jimmy Herring is lol so it is "you" that is the moron sir

  • I was asking if any of you people talking shit about Bill could outplay him. Jimmy is God!!! oh yeah I only studied under him for a year at AIM

  • oh ok yea Jimmy melted my face off at Bonnaroo this past Sunday

  • Bill's a monster! Whoever can play Chromazone just for the hell of it has my vote. Both he and Nite are my favorites.

  • thank God for Jimmy's ability to combine boring theory and tasty fun.

  • herring is a genius.

  • A true guitar god turns a good pedagogue? :-)

  • This man is one of the greatest guitar players in the freking world. I met him on a jam boat that goes around nyc. He was playing with col bruce, I was 5 feet from him blazing all over the neck of the guitar. Hes also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. GODBLESS JIMMY

  • me too, pleeeeease more lessons with jimmy. I will buy every one from you. if necessary

  • "that guy accompanying herring has the worst tone ive ever heard"

    agreed, ugh its bad

  • thank you

  • Oh yeah, "This is simple stuff"! Hah!.

    Very nice indeed.

  • that guy accompanying herring has the worst tone ive ever heard

  • I met Jimmy Herring at The Webster Theatre in Hartford, CT. Nicest man. I spoke with him for about 10 minutes. Got is autograph on my Polo Hat. Well worth it.

    Keep on Keeping on!

  • Hey thanks! We need more of this..

  • I like what I'm HERRING

  • Ha! This is awesome!

  • Thank you for this! I'd like to see more lessons with Jimmy.

  • thank you!!!

  • jimmy, love ya!!!!

  • Thank you very much!

  • Thanks for posting this! Any more? Jimmy Herring seems to be as nice a guy as he a wonderful player. Nice to see a guy like that get pissed with himself for flubbing a few notes! Very humble and apparently not an ego tripping guitar hero. Play on brother!

  • Met him at a Frogwings practice before SunFest gig in WPB 1998. Wonderful guy.

He was almost ashamed to tell us the name of a new project he was working on, loved the players in it but he did not really like the name all that much......Jazz Is Dead.
