  • "Mali" is Wealth or bride price that a man pays his potential wife's parents. The young man is too poor to afford the bride price which is paid in livestock (Cows, goats) Or money. Song sounds great in any version!

  • I love you Mariam Makeba!

  • I cannot imagine how any singer can have as far-reaching an effect on the world both politically and artisticly. Her music was a great part of my most pleasant memories from my adolescent years.

  • ke sitwa ke madi tlhe Malaika...

  • Oh my goodness - no wonder she forever will be Mama Afrika.

  • this song goes deep inside the kidneys.

  • No one in the Music Industry can touch you....No one can replace you.....We will never find someone as special as You,dear Miriam......RIP

  • I have not found anyone to replace you Miriam....I dont think I ever will...Thank God I will have your Music forever...I love you......Angel

  • No this song originates from a Tanzanian village...the Kenyans popularized it am Miriam Makeba killed it!

  • search bolder gazet van antwerpen

  • this song originates from kenya, not from tanzania. just like they stole our song jambo bwana.

  • @haidervalli I really didn't know that. Will have to see where and how I missed this. Thanks for the info and thanks for dropping that one word. :-))

  • @Adamfulgence this song is from Tanzania not Kenya.

  • @haidervalli no no You are worong.... this is from Tanzania that´s swali from Tanzania

  • @rafaellalarsen the originator of the song is fadhili william. do a search for his name.

  • @haidervalli Miriam is from South Africa so technically even if this song is in Swahili, I'd consider it to be a South African affair. So no, Tanzania didn't still anything and nor does it solely belong to Kenya. It's an African song for Africa, enjoy it as it is.

  • @haidervalli sorry dear the song is from Tz read better about it.

  • @kokusima Eish nyinyi WaTanzania...wacheni wizi...Malaika is from Kenya...nkt

  • @haidervalli i dont think this is important ...i think it's a swahili song and he belong to beautifull afrika . Bakya muzuri sana na Mungu . (oh yes i'm not african but love the continent ) Happy new year and God bless you .

  • MAMA AFRICA. I am from Nigeria but my grandmother speaks Swahili, I could sing this song before I could speak properly. Thanks for uploading and giving us the lyrics; it would make a wonderful gift for my grandmother when I visit her next year as I plan to sing it to her. Thanks Adamfulgence.

  • I wanna go to Africa! T_T

  • There will never be another....I had the great Honor to meet Miriam Twice in the US.Truly an Angel MALAIKA MIRIAM FOREVER.Your Music will always be closed to my Heart....Always...

  • R.I.P. MAMA AFRICA

  • In the "Nami nifanyaje" and the "Kijana mwenzio" you mixed up the two english translations..its supposed to be the other way around...but still good job, and a great song.

  • @bigpoppadudz Thank you! I'm not surprised that there are mistakes. As hard as I tried, I don't know the language.....Most importantly, I appreciate your letting me know in such a kind way. :-))

  • @Adamfulgence Your welcome..i could have scolded you, but i know swahili can be a very confusing language. i get confused myself once in a while....

  • @bigpoppadudz Thanks! You are the best!

  • My daughter's called Maleyka ...Aabo's Somali he told me it meant Little Angel ...and she is !

  • i liked this song before it was translated into english so that i could understand it fully.

  • splendid

  • Wonderful that you know her! For you it was Pata Pata, for me, it was the Click song. I discovered her in the 60s. It was sad to lose her. Thanks so much for watching and for your nice comment!

  • @Adamfulgence

    Lovely song!

idk if you do want to know but there are a few mistakes in the translation Ex: "roho"= heart not soul and "Nami nifanyeje"= what should i do? and kijana mwenzio implies your lover. You have this backwards in the song among other minor mistakes. Thankyou for putting this up here though. I remember this song from when i was a young girl in Kenya. It brings back great great memories :D

  • What I was loosing dear Eileen!!...I knew Miriam Makeba when she came to Argentina, being in exile she made a tour by South America, I was a child and like to dance the Pata Pata, at the 80s I discover more songs of Mama Afrika, and you have honoured her beautifully.

    thanks!!!!

  • lovely

  • This is the ORIGINAL and the BEST version of a song beautiful song from Tanganyika AFRIKA

  • Adamfulgence, How, as they say in Ncle, 'tis me again.Wonderin if you could do the same with Mackie Messer please, Good luck.

  • Hi Adamfulgence, thanks for your kind reply. Wish they had someone sing this or Pata Pata at the Olympics. She had a beautiful voice and was lovely too.

  • Awesome Thanks very much for the words in Englsh and for the translation. Used to sing this song without knowing a word of Swahili. My own transcription wasnt too far from this. Thanks, My partner stopped in his tracks when he heard Miriam's voice from outside The Sage, Gateshead, Newcastle, UK. He had missed a great show and was truly disappointed not to have known about it. Must have been one of her last performances.

  • @blackbirdieee Thanks! Nice to know that the language effort paid off. :-))

  • Nakupenda KARINE VAN OOSTERBOS!!!

  • @didier3311 I actually looked her up. :))

  • This is my jaaaaaaaaaaam

    nakupenda malaikaaaaaaaaa ayyyyy lol

  • love it thank you for the translation

  • This song is sung in Swahili, the first language I spoke. My parents took me to Tanganyika when I was 6 months old, to a place deep in the bush. My video has original footage, plus the lowering on the Union Jack on 9th December 1961. I have missed Africa, the warm people, the sun, the Swahili language since we left. This song takes me back, & credit to Miriam, who was a South African Xhosa, for her Swahili rendition.
