Is it true that 1 box of cake mix yields about 34 cake balls? I know with the "original" way of making cake balls you "add" the frosting directly to the cake mix for a really awesome taste & texture. Does this way still offer that "uniqueness" to the cake balls? I wasn't thinking about purchasing one at BBB or Target, but I wanted to be sure the cake balls would be just as good as rolling by hand & adding the delicious "flavors" of frosting to the pre-baked cake...then dipping in the melted choc
@Eseercam These are quite different than the rolled ones. These cake balls have a soft spongey cake texture, whereas rolled ones have a "raw dough" texture because the cake is mixed with frosting. There are tricks to adding additional flavor & / or moisture. You can brush a simple syrup of any flavor on top before dipping, and you can also inject frosting inside & still maintain the cakelike texture. I just like these better but it's a matter of personal preference so try it & let me know!
@iluvsatb re: sticks: For girly and most arrangements I use 4" or 6" white paper ones: sold in Walmart, Hobby Lobby cake dept. , I'm sure Michaels has a cake baking dept too. @sousa323 Thanks :) The dog is sure a cutie.. he doesn't like not being allowed into the kitchen whiel I'm making cakepops :) But we give him treats afterwards for obeying the "kitchen's off limit zone" lol
@HarryPotterFan2224 My son bought the pancake pen bottle for me last Christmas from Williams Sonoma. There are other brands available too though. Look on Ebay, Amazon or google search Pancake Pen or Batter bottle & see what it comes up with. You'll LOVE it!
do they taste good though? real cake pops are cake crumbs and frosting, this is just baked cake so wouldnt it taste completely different? please respond.
@IcedLipGloss It's a matter of taste preference. I like a quick bite sized snack and to me these taste like cake which I like. The taste is very similar, the main difference is in texture. I prefer these bc they are cake, not mushy overly moistned cake. Rolled crumbled cakepops mixed with frostings are too mushy for my tastebuds, they remind me of raw cookie dough. It's all a matter of preference. I like the rolled ones but prefer the baked ones more, plus they have LESS calories lol
@xChildGlazex I'm sure you could make almost anything in this but it may require some trial and error as far as cooking times. Post a reply when you do try it so we can all find out how it worked out!
@norxcontacts I'm trying to find which comment your reply was to, but I can say as for whatever it was, this has a clamp, sort of. It will close & you can clamp it shut but it's not extremely tight, but it will stay closed enough. What I do is put a kitchen mitt on & literally squeeze it together the first minute or so, enough to allow the ball shape to form the outer shell and not ooze or leak out. This also helps to avoid those saturn rings, I think I showed some that turned out that way...
@sousa323 lol aww thank you it was funny because he is NOT allowed in the kitchen when I'm baking so he was sitting there all sad just beyond the kitchen entrance... looking all cute like he was going to get a scrap or something. He just wanted his 15 minutes of fame I guess lol
Someone asked me how this compares to the cake pop types of baking pans like tasty pops & bake pops but I can't find your comment so I'll just address it directly here & now. I actually tried to buy a tasty pop pan but they are on such a long waiting list I cancelled the order bc I had originally paid additional to get the expedited shipping. I want a bake pops pan but again the same thing. I've used various shaped silicone pans with great results in whatever shapes I've used if that helps!
@perdantasterx aww thank you! I recently created a blog where I'll post photos & more detailed explanations, tutorials & such so check it outon blogspot.com it's under The Displaced Northerner
I have finally got around to making the cake pops with the Babycakes machine. It came out good! I used a Betty Crocker box mix. All of the pops baked well. I injected all of them with buttercream and I haven't had oozing at all. The decorating was easier than I thought. Thank you again for this video because it has helped and taught me a lot; I experienced no technical difficulties whatsoever.
@humannaturedj lol that's GREAT! You're one up on me bc I still haven't injected anything into mine. what flavor betty crocker mix did you use? I usually use Duncan Heines & it's SO GOOD hearing someone had good luck with a box mix bc I've had a few flops with certain brands & flavors. I'm glad you liked the video! I started a blog on blogger.com look me up I'm the displaced northerner and I'd love to hear more about what works for you in the machines etc
@crazy4crafts I used Super Moist Yellow. The cake didn't come out dry at all. The only thing I would say about the injection is to not be afraid to stick it in the pop because I was afraid to stick it too far and I had barely any buttercream in the pop. Oozing doesn't happen at all as long as you freeze the pops first so the buttercream hardens. I will definitely check out your blog!
@humannaturedj oh thanks! I had just recently started adding posts & more detailed info there and am trying to build up my subscribers so by all means stop by the blog and subscribe! I'd love to see photos of your creations as well if you have anything tell me where to find it. I love comparing notes with others who enjoy baking these little pops as much as I do! it's the displaced northerner on blogspot.com for now. I may start another page on a more popular blogging site but we'll see
@crazy4crafts I have pictures of the cake pops I made on FB (you can go to my YT page to find my name) and I do have the pictures saved on my hard drive if there's another way to show you. I actually find making cake pops not only easier, but more fun than baking a cake. There are too many steps and since I'm a perfectionist, I get stressed when I mess up. See ya on the blog!
@humannaturedj I'll try to find you but another EASY way to connect is thru my facebook page which I have a little blurb about how to find me as you watch the video I think it says the email is cakepoplori at yahoo dot com. if you know what I mean lol anyhow search that complete correctly written email address on FB nd you will find me there. the profile is Custom Cake Pop Arrangements typed with spaces or find it using that email I mentioned bc I'd love to see the pops you've created!
@crazy4crafts Oh good! I went to your blog and tried to follow you. Idk if you see me on the Followers list now, but I hope I'm there! And I like your blog! I'm pretty young, so I could learn a lot from you (I sure need it right now).
@kimvankieu101 I cook for literally 4 minutes then I unplug it and start removing them with the prong tool. As for filling it's trial and error depending on the batter used. The chocolate recipe from the babycakes recipe booklet is still my favorite because it bakes the same every time and I only fill it just a hair from the top which is about a TBS but I dont' measure it I just eyeball it. The video shows the amount and if you overfill it leaves those rings so practice!
@AlXRaven I use the melts and one bag varies in weight depending on the brand. I also use a white chocolate candy coating called almond bark. I don' t think it actually has anything almond in it but I'm not sure. As for quantity of melts, one package of almond bark is enough to coat about 4 dozen. the winton'smelts don't coat that many & you have to thin it out with shortning. it just dependso n how thick you dip etc. I'll make another batch this week and I'll tru to measure how many melts i use
@xXJennaSueXx To get some from me search on FB for cakepoplori@yahoo.com They're "good" & they maintain their moisture & freshness for about a week, bc they're coated within an hour from baking so the moisture's sealed inside. I also ship same day I bake. A small dallop of frosting icing can also be injected inside for added moisture. The most cost effective shipping is USPS Priority Mail Prices vary depending on the qty you want shipped.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that I never use box mix. I use a special blend of Belgian chocolate and coverture chocolate also. The idea of using the William Sonoma pancake bottle is a good one. Gave the Babycake machine away.
@paconot I know what you mean about the saturn rings actually. if you overfill you get them. I still do make the crumble method for some flavirs & box batter for SOME flavors & I still have to resort to making a batter by hand / scratch for some flavors bc in this machine. It's trial & error, you use what works & ditch the fails & keep looking till you find what you want. I am STILL searching out a perfect recipe for vanilla cake,if you have a good recipe tell me! Your pops sound yummy!
I tried the cake pop machine and was not impressed, but I did not bother to experiment as you did. Mine resulted in dry over cooked Saturn shaped balls. And when I tried to dip them in chocolate that was not an improvement. They say I make the best cakeballs in my area because I know how to add things to my cooked cake batter that makes the texture not so doughy. But, I was hoping to find a quick short-cut. I will stick with my method. Thanks and good luck.
@paconot What do you add to the cake batter to make it NOT turn out so doughy? do you use the Belgian and coverture chocolates just to dip into or add directly to your cake ball mixture after it's baked?. Where do you purchase these types of chocolates.I still like the texture of the baked type made using this machine but if there is a way ot reduce that doughy texture of the crumble roll method I may just have to convert lol
@crazy4crafts I buy my chocolates from a restaurant grocers warehouse. You should have one in your area they are all over "The Restaurant Depot." I only use Calebault white and bittersweet chocolates and Valrhona chocolate.
UPDATE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED::: I started making some shaped cardboard cake pop displays if you want a creative inexpensive stand but don't have patience or time or know how I'll gladly make one for ya. I just made a skateboard stand that holds 24 or so pops, and am making an IPOD stand for Dec. If I think I can make it I'll try! Contact me at cakepoplor@yahoo.com or find me on facebook by searching custom cake pop arrangements
I must've watched the video over 20 times already ha. I just got my Babycakes Cake Pop maker and there's only one question I have: Would it be okay to use a box mix? Some people have said it's fine, others say the cake ball is too soft. And what do the chocolate pops (in the recipe book) taste like? I noticed it calls for some kind of coffee in it.....
@humannaturedj Some box mixes work some don't and it doesn't have anything to do w specific flavors either. I know Duncan heines butter flavor worked for me & the babycakes booklet chocolate has coffee in it but you dont' taste coffee, it just enhances the cocoa taste. Share w us what's worked for you so we can all have more successes than fails!
@crazy4crafts Ohhh! I'm wanting to use a Betty Crocker cake mix with the cake pop maker tomorrow and inject it with buttercream. If I don't, I'll just mix up a batch of the chocolate and see how that goes. I will come back to let you know how it goes. Thanks a million times for posting this video, it's helped a lot!
@MzMuChi3 I have not usesed the injector yet bc I hear it leaves a large hole where you injected the filling & as you coat them in melted chocolate the filler leaks out. I'm going to try a fine tipped injector like you'd use injecting sauce into turkey .The other reason is I haen't found any filler recipe I'd want to use. I'm still trying to find a devil dog cream filler that doesnt' taste like marshmallow. let me know if YOU inject fillers & what tastes good etc! thanks :)
Dear crazyforcrafts.. I just wanted to share my experince w/ babycakes mashine. I tried to use strawberry cake mix; the result was pure.Cakes did not rise properly and weer nor rownd enough. I also had to bake them for 7,if not 8 min to rise. Next time I will try to the chocolate cake recipe u r using and share my experince. The only plus of my batter was that it did not overflow.Shall I try the yellow cake mix?I do not think it is much different from strawberry, but may be it is?
Pilsbury Strawberry doesn't rise. I tried Duncan Hines butter flavor yellow & that did well. The babycakes booklet's yellow recipe did NOT do well even though they say their recipes are tested - mine didn't work. The chocolate they offer is the best as far as formation of round evenly baked balls. I continue to try new recipes but so far, chocolate rules! I resort to hand rolling for flavors that won't rise ~ I just add less frosting so they aren't overwhelmingly sticky. Let me know what works
how do the cake pops taste in comparison to ones that are made by hand (baking the cake, breaking it up, mixing in frosting, etc.)? is there a big difference in the texture?
@t0nt0n52890 This machine bakes a bite of cake that tastes like CAKE w cake texture. The hand mixed creates a sort of pasty doughy texture, I personally can't handle more than 1 of them but that may not be a bad thing lol I actually prefer the baked way instead of hand rolled but it's all personal preference. Some people eat raw cookie dough and that's what the hand rolled method reminds me of. Tasty sure but after 1 or 2 it's just too much so I opt for the bakes ones
@sweetness8t5 lol YEP! & luckily I've gotten better at making them so even though there will almost always be a reject or two.. I'm eating LESS of them these days.
The color I dippped was Wilton's Pink Choc Melts. It's thick though so you have to add either Veg. oil OR solid Crisco shortening to thin it out. I switched to regular "almond bark white" w a little wilton's GEL based pink or a little red GEL food coliring (NOT WATER BASED) to add coloring. W the bark you won't need to add the veg oil or crisco bc it's not as thick as that wiltons pink is. & for chocolate I ONLY use the grocery store Almond bark now bc it's cheaper AND thins out beautifully
@wildfire164 SURE but I'm not sure of baking time and if it's open on top you have to manually turn the baked cakeballs half way thru the cooking process so they can still rise yet maintain the ball shape.I googled takoyaki machines and they show a baked fritter type of ball that is round so again I think it would work. Also look up Ebelskiver pans bc they have the same ball shaped wells so Let me know what you use to bake them in and how it works!
@caliichicks101 OMG the camera is my Olympus Digital camera, the model is a SP-55ouz w an 18x optical zoom. I'm no expert that's for sure lol It was light & small enough to hold while trying to bake & dip etc.
@thesubmissivewoman The color I dippped in is Wilton's Pink Chocolate Melts. It's so you have to add either Veg. oil OR solid Crisco shortening to thin it out. I don't use that any more ~ using regular "almond bark white w a little wilton's GEL based pink or a little red GEL food coliring (NOT WATER BASED) adds great coloring & it isn't as thick, so you won't need to add the veg oil or crisco. for chocolate I ONLY use the grocery store Almond bark now bc it's cheaper AND thins out beautifully
@tsias1603 I bake them and cool completely never dip when they are still warm so I like to bake then stick in freezer for 20 mins then take out insert stick w melted chocolate THEN put back in freezer for about 15 mins after inserting the sticks THEN I start dipping but only taking out about 5 at a time never leaving them in the freezer more than half hour or so bc the chocolate will literally crack as it gets dipped it cools down too fast if you left them in the freezer too long
Your tutorial is FANTASTIC! Thank you for sharing this. I have always wondered how this machine really worked and your tips about unplugging it were beyond helpful!
@missashleymarieee williams sonoma store or their online site sells them I have used a ketchup mustard container when I first started just cut the tip to make the spout hole wider I also bought a 2nd one made by nordic ware and if you can't find any I would think even a cleaned out squeeze jelly container with the wide round opening would also work in pouring the mixture out fast
@milagros711 BOTH Success depends on the right cake recipe so ck out The companys facebook which is named Select Brands inc for recipes I always use duncan hines classic yellow to make white cakepops.bc the machine's white cake mix recipe was too dry. My favorite chocolate recipe is the one in the booklet that came with the babycakes machine. good luck

Let me know what works

how do the cake pops taste in comparison to ones that are made by hand (baking the cake, breaking it up, mixing in frosting, etc.)? is there a big difference in the texture?
t0nt0n52890 5 months ago

@crazy4crafts could we use a takoyaki machine?
wildfire164 4 months ago
@wildfire164 SURE but I'm not sure of baking time and if it's open on top you have to manually turn the baked cakeballs half way thru the cooking process so they can still rise yet maintain the ball shape.I googled takoyaki machines and they show a baked fritter type of ball that is round so again I think it would work. Also look up Ebelskiver pans bc they have the same ball shaped wells so Let me know what you use to bake them in and how it works!

what camera?
caliichicks101 5 months ago
@caliichicks101 OMG the camera is my Olympus Digital camera, the model is a SP-55ouz w an 18x optical zoom. I'm no expert that's for sure lol It was light & small enough to hold while trying to bake & dip etc.

Is that white chocolate u r using?. /with some red food coloring?

@thesubmissivewoman The color I dippped in is Wilton's Pink Chocolate Melts. It's so you have to add either Veg. oil OR solid Crisco shortening to thin it out. I don't use that any more ~ using regular "almond bark white w a little wilton's GEL based pink or a little red GEL food coliring (NOT WATER BASED) adds great coloring & it isn't as thick, so you won't need to add the veg oil or crisco. for chocolate I ONLY use the grocery store Almond bark now bc it's cheaper AND thins out beautifully

how long do you leave them in the freezer befor you insert the sticks? and also how long do you leave them in the freezer after you put the sticks
tsias1603 5 months ago
@tsias1603 I bake them and cool completely never dip when they are still warm so I like to bake then stick in freezer for 20 mins then take out insert stick w melted chocolate THEN put back in freezer for about 15 mins after inserting the sticks THEN I start dipping but only taking out about 5 at a time never leaving them in the freezer more than half hour or so bc the chocolate will literally crack as it gets dipped it cools down too fast if you left them in the freezer too long

where did you find that pancake pen at?
missashleymarieee 5 months ago
@missashleymarieee williams sonoma store or their online site sells them I have used a ketchup mustard container when I first started just cut the tip to make the spout hole wider I also bought a 2nd one made by nordic ware and if you can't find any I would think even a cleaned out squeeze jelly container with the wide round opening would also work in pouring the mixture out fast

What kind of cake mixture did you use can you use it right of the box or make your own mixture?
milagros711 5 months ago
@milagros711 BOTH Success depends on the right cake recipe so ck out The companys facebook which is named Select Brands inc for recipes I always use duncan hines classic yellow to make white cakepops.bc the machine's white cake mix recipe was too dry. My favorite chocolate recipe is the one in the booklet that came with the babycakes machine. good luck
