@fjknm Don't forget about Dominique Dawes, Gail Devers, and Dawn Staley. Hell of some athletes. May not have won as many titles, but some of the best athletes I've ever seen male or female.
Can someone pls try to reasonably explain to me, why today's athletes jump half a meter short to athletes from the 80's/early 90's in avg.? Skill and training methods lost or what?:p
It's a shame to always talk about performance enhancing methods, since some athletes do spread their huge charm but still: were today's longjump women born with less muscle cells in their legs? Did they stop training daily ? Dont they have the superclue in technique and speed ? Honestly, i doubt that.
yes possibly to run 200m and LJ as she did but you are forgetting (or maybe you don't pay attetion) that she was also a hurdler and throw the javelin and run 800m etc to a level so far beyond anyone else in theevent? All achieved in an era of drug taking and when US athletes - Lewis/Andre Philips etc failed drugs tests yet went to Seoul?! If you guys weren't US citizens you wouldn't buy it
@whitewingeddove70 You're modifying facts to fit your thesis. JJK was world class in the hurdles, long jump and the 200. She was never the best 800m runner in a championship. All you have as your "proof" is that she was really very good. With that same logic, anyone who's ever crossed the finished line first on more than one occasion, was on drugs. And I didn't know her personally. But I do know her coach and I know that, on the field, he was no joke.
@CHEETAH69 800m as in the Hep event not the individual - Jeez does it have to be explained that much - I am pointing out she is so far above ANYONE else in the Hep and set records in years when DRUGS were being taken by almost all athletes or so it now seems. I dont doubt she worked hard but knowing her coach doesn't mean you know what happens in private - people prob didn't doubt Ben Johnson worked hard and hard good coach
@whitewingeddove70 You need to spell nothing out. Just read what I said. She was never the best or far above the best in the HEP 800! So don't attempt to make it seem as though she was just blowing chicks out the water in each of the 7 events. And you know NOTHING about her coach, her nor how she trained, so I'm guessing we could say you have even less insight as to what she did or didn't do. Once more, all you can say is, "she was really good during a time where many used drugs." not enough.
I had the great honor of meeting this beautiful champion in 1986 after a indoor track meet in Chicago. One of my top five favorite athletes all time. And is a much better person than athlete if that is possible. Oh and btw, all of you amateur dope doctors casting mindless and classless TMZ aspersions about this wonderful all time great without any proof can eat shit.
gavedog - she was already an Olympic class athlete not a high school kid when she made massive improvements - get those rose tinted glasses off and wise up - you dont think theres a possibility when she is over 250 points better at the even than ANYONE else, that she took drugs-you are unbelievably naive sounding
@whitewingeddove70 You are incredibly arrogant to assume that one couldn't improve as much as she did naturally. The woman owned this event for nearly a decade. She had the best coach in the biz and she worked like a madwoman to reach her achievements. Her time in 88, btw, was 22.30.
@whitewingeddove70 to be honest..you do sound naive bc if you REALLY paid attention to & followed track & field, you would know that with hard work...a woman at HER age back then and with her woman strength, it is possible to run a 22.30 & jump at 7.40m LJ..today..there is a high school senior from Florida ranked #1 in the nation for running a 23.42 in the 200m so y is it "likely" that Kersee took drugs & didn't perform based off natural ability?? Jackie Joyner Kersee was just BAD period!
what bothers me re JJK is that her WR is so far out of reach as a record-it therefore seems likely in that era she was on drugs - many didnt get caught-reasons why iffy - 200m in 24 secs at LA in 84 but PB in 88 was 22-56 - a massive improvement - also incredible hurdles improvement before you get to the rest of the events!
@whitewingeddove70 ummm yes it was a big improvement...OVER FOUR YEARS!!! Do me a favor go to the IAAF web page and look at the top athletes and look at their progress over four years....it's tru that when you start running certain times and jumping certain distances you can not improve by much, but 24 sec is what girls in high school run. give me a break...
like so many athletes in the 80s she performed 'naturally' better than anyone can these days even with all the cheats in sports now!! even marion jones couldnt jump her distances and no heptathlete has ever got close to her scores... and she did this clean beating all the east germans and russians... yeah right!
Qonsbg. Produce proof or please STFU!!! In 1935 at the Big Ten Track and Field Championships The incredible Jessie Owens set 4 world records within an hour. If you were in the stands that day you would have swore(with zero proof like now) that the great man was on drugs. You have no credibility.
Ruth Fuchs from East Germany was twice Olympic Javelin champion. She never actually tested positive, but after becoming a politician admitted in the german parliament that she took anabolic steroids throughout her athletic career. It proves that you can cheat and never get caught. People who think that only the Eastern Europeans were taking drugs during the 1980s really need to get a grip on themselves.
that's all TALENT...no STEROIDS at all. She was constantly being tested and it showed nothing of that sort. I KNOW, I'M FROM EAST SAINT LOUIS SENIOR HIGH, SHE WAS MY COACH. MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ HER BOOK TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT SHE WENT THROUGH AND HOW SHE GOT TO WHERE SHE IS NOW. HER VOICE ISN'T DEEPER THAN A MAN, TRUST ME, WE'VE HAD PLENTY OF CONVERSATIONS.
@Brunnnila1989 Everyone was cheating back then and beating the tests, especially athletes from the USA who had the most advanced drugs programmes of all. Sorry but there were no clean champions in the 1980's, not one.
@MrNormalton Quick question, are you a track and field athlete? Do you have any idea what hard work looks like? She was clearly not on steriods. She put in the hard work daily both mentally and physically to become the best without the use of steriods. Athletes today are putting in the hard work. She was one of the many true athletes who wanted to be the best and put in the work. Jackie loved what she did which also helped her.
@RodneyRude7 I really don't want to be rude but have you ever watched her practice? Have you associated with the people who helped her become such a great athlete? She has asthma and still kicked butt on the track. Why? because she had and still has the burning desire to be the best at whatever she does. I can't change your opinion, but I will tell you the facts. She did not use steriods. It's called talent.
In my opinion, the greatest female athlete of ALL-TIME!!!
