reply to your fuel ratio-, im 58 yrs old and i have been running all my two cycle engines at 50:1 for many years and i have not had one problem with any of them. i also repair small engines and most problems people have is by running to much oil like you do so if you like your stuff running crappy and fouling plugs and slugging up your engines by all means run them with alot of oil thats what the manufactor wants you to do so they can sell you more equipment. thanks for your time.
For someone whose giving me advice, you sound a bit rude about it. I've worked with 2-stroke lawnboys and many trimmers plus new ones for more than 15 years, and all of it used on a daily basis for my lawncare service. Unlike most of the people you had to repair their engines for, I fully maintain my machines, I've cleaned plugs, to ensure they don't run like crap. I've not encountered one problem with engine sludge. Its better to run a bit more oil to ensure it's lubricated
I never understood the oil ratios with Homelite. My old '94 26cc Homelite trimmer was supposed to run on 32 to 1. Instead it received 50 to 1. Lasted 11 seasons doing a single home. Like a dummy I threw it in the trash when I got frustrated tying to get the recoil spring back together after the rope broke. It was running fine.
@Jon3800 Its not dangerous at all unlees you are trimming in VERY dry conditions. Its just a little mesh screen. I have had mine out for 2 years and nothing has happen and nothing bad is suppose to happen. And the exhuast tone sounds a lot better
well dude, instead of you trying to criticize me, watch the newer vids and you'll see I've bought a $400 STIHL commercial trimmer this summer and having plans on buying another stihl commercial. Besides commercial trimmers are overrated anyway. For the price you pay on the machine, sure you might get 0.3 hp more than residential models but your warranty sucks if they find out you use it commercially.
@Jon3800 most warranties are 2 years or less anyway. Even commercial use, you should have no problems in the warranty period. I have a Husqvarna 323L and very highly recommend Huskies.
Thing is a monster when it comes to cutting damn near anything.
Shindaiwa rocks. Over here in Europe Stihl stuff is V. Expensive. I have just bought a shindaiwa Hedge trimmer and it kicks ass. My grass trimmer is a very cheap Einhell (£80) with 3 year guarantee. Never let me down :-)
As a certified two stroke mechanic i must say for the most part if you are using your cheap trimmers commercially they will not last long at all most commercial landscape equipment shops like mine do not work on anything other than commercial grade echo and redmax trimmers. Thats is why you have so mant trimmers so when one breaks you got another piece of shit back up. Not a smart business expense. By one good commercial unit for around 350 bucks you will not be dissappointed.
I don't agree with you for the most part. Most of those trimmers stood the test of time and still run strong, videos to prove it!! Even my lawnmowers are 20+ years & still work. You have to realize that the trimmers here are used on a rotational basis, so they are not used every single day and every single time I need the grass.
I have bought a brand new STIHL FS -70 commercial grade ($350), and I am disappointed with it. Good power, but poor crankshaft design, unbalanced, heavy and had to be serviced twice. Not so for the POS's.
No mean for disrespect, but "commercial" seems overrated. You're just voiding the warranty faster and I am already in trouble with Stihl, I have to baby that 70 if I want to keep it. Its a smart business expense when customers donate trimmers and learn to fix them yourself
@Jon3800 Yeah the Stihl corp has really gone down hill with the reliable trimmer. I must say i swear by their chainsaws. I wouldnt buy a stihl trimmer. I service RedMax and Echo trimmers they are great and strong running machines. If you are skeptical about the commercial grade try out a RedMax BCZ2600S or an Echo SRM 2600 they run and are built to last like a well manufactured commercial trimmer should.
well I felt Buyer's remorse for that FS-70 and should have opted for the 4-mix FS90r instead, a lot better. I'm not skeptical about commercial trimmers when it comes to be a better built, I know who make the good ones, but rather the companies value towards the warranty. Even tho you spend a good $400 on one, the question becomes when does the company stop honoring your warranty when a mechanic finds out you use it commercially? I hope you see where I'm coming from
@Jon3800 Oh yeah i completly see where your comming from. Most commercial unit warranties last 2 years and everything we sell is a commercial piece so we know its going to be used for that purpose. The good commercial units scream 8 to 10 hours a day for 5 months straight here. With annual tune ups like new fuel lines carb cleaning and changing the grease in the gear case they last 5 or 6 years commercially or longer. I hope everything works out for you. Best of luck.
@Jon3800 Your standard commercial trimmer as far as the stihl line up goes is the FS90. If you i doing commercial i would stick with one of them. Trying to edge (With my string trimmer attachment) on my Km110 or 130 is hard because of the torque. They are good machines dont get me wrong. If you are trying to edge get a straight up two-stroke,straight shaft Stihl.
I am planning on getting the FS-90R next spring. This vid's a bit old, so this year I added Stihl's new commercial straight shaft, the FS-70 RC-E (I am the only person on youtube to have vids of this model). I payed close to $350 and I'ts a nice trimmer. I rarely edge, my lawn with a trimmer, have a lawn edger for that :)
@Jon3800 It would be the best decision you' ve made as far as a trimmer. Get rid of that fs70. From what ive heard is the strato engines in the new trimmers such as that one is basically, well not good. If you can try and find the Stihl equipment that is manufactered either in the U.S or Germany. All of mine are manufactured here in the good ol' U.S of A. They are better quality. Best of luck in your Purchases
To be fair, most of these I got were donations from happy clients, so not many of these trimmers were actually bought. The only ones I did ever buy were the 2 stihl, the shindaiwa and the mightylite (which I needed a lightweight trimmer).
Actually the fs70 is a US model (checked the serial tag) unlike the chinese fs38. I bought it in June, spent $420 after tax, so can't possibly return it.
I don't know what you heard, but the machine isn't bad. After using it, has great power, shy short of the fs90r, and good on gas. The only complaint I have is the flexible crankshaft that vibrates heavily on high RPMs, also plagues the fs100rx. No major problems yet with the 70, my 38 spent more time in the shop.
Just give me the Stihl. I allways work with Stihl. I've got a Stihl 029 chainsaw and I'd like to buy a Stihl brushcutter. If you maintain it normal it will work every time! It's a pleasure to work with the german quality. ;)

You must be referring to someone else. I personally never scorched a piston on a gas trimmer. The only engine damage that I experienced was a thrown rod on a worn 6.5hp duraforce lawnboy motor.
shindaiwa t231 pros, engine has a heart of an olympic runner 2 years under its belt 12 to 15 hours a week 36 weeks a year going on its 3rd year of comercial abuse and still kicks over on the 2nd pull, the cons pricey but well worth every penny and u can only use certian trimmer lines in the speed feed head or will jam up on u other than that keep the air filter clean,a new spark plug when needed, and rip out the spark arester screen and throw away.remember u get what u pay for.
them homelites are giant pieces of junk i watch one guy get one out of the box and it took 10 to 15 minuts and couldn't get the pos to start and it wasn't user error either cause i had a home lite too and it was junk
It's not for the fun of owning several machines, I own a small lawn business, tending to over 70 clients on my own, so I do need the extra machines should some break down
Just thought I'd let you know that Stihl is actually pronounced "steel". I used to pronounce it "still" too until I saw a Stihl commercial and they pronounced it "steel". Also, can you do a demonstration video of all these trimmers? Thanks.
your homelite mighty lite runs WAY! to lean running a 2 stroke lean at 50:1 will kill your engine, I would reccomend running all of your 50:1 at 40:1 for a longer engine life and less engine wear!! and I run all my 50:1 engines at 40:1
Nice video I like the shindiawa, glad you took the time to replace the diaphrams. I just got one for free just like it had the exhaust port caked up, runs and idles so sweet. I also have an old echo the runs like a champ but will not idle for very long. All I can say is to scrap the homelites. Ryobi makes a decent trimmer at best, I would rank them in order of Echo, Stihl, Shindiawa, then ryobi. Poulan and Homelite are pretty much scrap. It is better to repair a good trimmer run scrap shit....
well that not all right. Stihl has one model that is called the fs80r, its has more power then your stihl fs38 but it is lighter then all of your weedeater and for the price you cant bet it. IT is about 319-350. In the long run its the better deal. look it up on the stihl website
hey dude. when your starting your trimmers you should start it while its on the ground. I feel it gives a little power to the pull and is better for the pull start. Its reccommended in most manuals.
im just learning. Im more experienced in keeping tarantulas, but I got into my repairing most of my lawnmowers to avoid expensive repairs for repair shops
but still your shindaiwa sounded nice and in your recent vid, when you mentiond that echos where expencive, did you menchion that beacuse of me, the other day.
ya, because its got a new diaphragm on it and I didn't want to spend an extra $90. And yes, a lot of people don't realize how expensive things are in Canada compared to the US. I would buy an echo, but paying $400 for trimmer is a bit overpriced for my taste.
I might have to clean the plug on the Stihl, its been backfiring a lot.
For the Shindaiwa, I did all that I could to repair that one. I saved myself $90 by putting on that diaphragm kit on myself, so its pretty good for someone with no experience on repairing trimmers.
Ya, that Ryobi sat for 5 years unused. Its brand new
i had a ryobi like the last one, and it was a good trimmer. it usually took a couple pulls to start. Then i garbaged picked a almost Brand New Ryobi trimmer, but it had no bottom shaft for the trimmer attachment, but i had and extra on so i put it on. before i put gas in it i checked the plug, and it look almost clean, like a new plug. i guess the owner busted the tip or sumthing and just threw it away. so i just sold the old ryobi, and now i use this new one!

It is better to repair a good trimmer run scrap shit....

if u use ur trimmers commerically way dont u get commeriacl trimmers. So then u wont have to buy trimmers all the time

commercials are kind of heavy and fairly expensive (they start in the $450-600 range)
Jon3800 2 years ago
well that not all right. Stihl has one model that is called the fs80r, its has more power then your stihl fs38 but it is lighter then all of your weedeater and for the price you cant bet it. IT is about 319-350. In the long run its the better deal. look it up on the stihl website
grizzlybaseball191 2 years ago
okay, might be $350 where you live, In Canada we are unfortunate to have met 15% sales tax, so what would amount to $400.
Jon3800 2 years ago
hey dude. when your starting your trimmers you should start it while its on the ground. I feel it gives a little power to the pull and is better for the pull start. Its reccommended in most manuals.

you are turning out to be a pretty good mechanic for lawnmowers and weedeaters
Echosrm230 2 years ago
im just learning. Im more experienced in keeping tarantulas, but I got into my repairing most of my lawnmowers to avoid expensive repairs for repair shops
Jon3800 2 years ago
but still your shindaiwa sounded nice and in your recent vid, when you mentiond that echos where expencive, did you menchion that beacuse of me, the other day.
Echosrm230 2 years ago
ya, because its got a new diaphragm on it and I didn't want to spend an extra $90. And yes, a lot of people don't realize how expensive things are in Canada compared to the US. I would buy an echo, but paying $400 for trimmer is a bit overpriced for my taste.
Jon3800 2 years ago
yeah it is expencive but if you eve do get an echo there expencive but the'll last a lifetime if maintaned properly one repower kit every 6 monthes
Echosrm230 2 years ago
cool

great vid man! why dont you fix the stuff yourself though?
redneckmikey69 2 years ago
trimmers are quite complicated
Jon3800 2 years ago
compression on the homelite zipstart model looked a little low
Echosrm230 2 years ago
it pulls well, and starts well, I got it for free so I can't realy complain.
Jon3800 2 years ago
that stihl really needs a carburetor adjustment. It would run a lot better if it were richened a little.
OMG MADE IN CHINA?! now I'm DEFINITELY not buying a stihl! no offense i just hate chinese stuff that's why i didn't get a homelite
That second homelite is running pretty dang well :)
that shindawa could use a little adjustment too but not too bad.
the Ryobi is surprisingly running quite well- just as good as the one homelite!
nice video there Jon

thanks.
Its brand new
Jon3800 2 years ago
I don't like chinese made stuff myself
Jon3800 2 years ago
i am with ya there
Echosrm230 2 years ago
same here chinese stuff is shit your better just buying them all and throwing all the chionese stuff away
Echosrm230 2 years ago
im better off buying used equipment
Jon3800 2 years ago
i had a ryobi like the last one, and it was a good trimmer. it usually took a couple pulls to start.
