someone needs to talk about the huge influence of the New Age occult on the Christian 'business' world. All those business conferences that talk about INCREASE, INCREASE and talk little about the blood of Jesus Christ needs to be reckoned with and revealed.
If you plumb the depths of what Nouwen thinks and teachings, what his worldview consists of and who he supports and what their own worldview is, it is distrurbing why Ravi would label Mr Nouwen with such a label as one fo the greatest saints. People need to wake up and start to discern truth v error. This is really becoming a real big problem in today's world. We are not to worship our leaders, but hold them accountable.
I agree with your point about mysticism BUT you are taking Ravi's words completely out of context. (Why do Christians do this to each other? Listen to his whole lecture and think for yourself!) Ravi was giving a thoughtful response to a question about those who might struggle w/ homosexuality leanings and temptation, which is something Henri Nouwen was reported to have had, but chose never to act upon. Ravi's theology is rock solid.
@janryan1 They were expounding on this man's worldview and asking why Ravi would label a Catholic Mystic with a strange worldview as an appropriate leader and called him the greatest christian saints? I think that deserves an explanation. They didn't even get into the homosexual thing. They were discussing how we form our worldview and what means we do that?
@janryan1 They were expounding on this man's worldview and asking why Ravi would label a Catholic Mystic with a strange worldview as an appropriate leader and called him the greatest christian saints? This talkshow completely misses the point of what Zaccharias was saying. They don't even play the whole video. Nouwen was simply an example to illustrate his point (which this program did not even cover). His point had absolutely nothing to do with mysticism. Yet they use him to prove that he is "fascinated by mystics." That couldn't be further from the truth. I find Mother Theresa inspiring but does that mean I am fascinated by mysticism in the Catholic Church? No.
I like Ravi and listen to him often. Although I'd like to hear his response to the criticism, the fact remains that he did endorse Nouwen as one of the greatest saints in recent years. If they overstate his position, that is, indeed, wrong. However, as one who believes in sola gratia and sola scriptura, he does need to answer for his promotion of those who example otherwise. I think that's their main point, though perhaps muddled by an enthusiastic defense.
This program's premise makes a serious extrapolative jump. To reiterate my point, I would say as Ravi did that Mother Theresa is one of the greatest saints in recent memory if the context of the discussion is say, humanitarian relief for starving children in foreign nations. Does that mean I endorse the Catholic church and everything they believe in? No. But I guess these people would be complaining that I was "endorsing" her "apostate views." Ravi is not in the wrong here at all.
I can see by some of these comments that there is a lack of understanding of 'Emergent Christianity.' Ravi is wrong on this one. We are being fed a bunch of hogwash and extra biblical teaching. Mysticism does not trump the Bible.
I think it's going a bit far to put Ravi in there. Now of course I have my bias, I love Ravi, BUT more than that I love Jesus and i Love Truth. Ravi did indeed make a COSTLY mistake by calling that guy a great saint but that video is old and he is a GROWING believer. As stated in James 3, his judgment will be stricter, so the best thing we can do is PRAY for him. The fact of the matter is that ALL of Ravi's books and teachings say one thing: Jesus is the ONLY way to the Father.
i've watched a bunch of these crosstalk clips you're put up Lane, can you tell me please, is there ANYTHING they approve of? the entire show seems to be one giant finger pointing exercise!
This is how you end up when you go down the line of living according to Law. In truth, nothing is good enough, we've all fallen short of The Glory of God. There used to be a site called Corrupt Christianity that was similar.
The fact is, however Godly someone is, they will believe certain things that are completely wrong. Fortunately, we have The Bible and The Holy Spirit to guide us (when we balance the two correctly)!
This show is just clown shoes sometimes. the Mystic/monastic movment within the chruch has a biblical; yes I said biblical foundation. The exclusive linking of this movement with the East is either lazy or ignorant. My own gess is that its some combination of both
I guess it is Okay to teach Hereasy and Extrabiblical or PRIVATE interpretaion of scripture as facts or orthodoxy. I have not view this YET but chech out my page and links to other from the videos on my page and you will get educated about these char-actors.
my complaint against Silva has nothing to do with his indictment of soft evangelical theology, but the fact is that historical Christian mysticism, from the desert fathers to the Rhineline mystics took its lead from biblical models and teachings. Just because its not "reformed theology" from the sixteenth or nineteenth century does not make it hearsay. To gain a different perspective on the issue read The Word in the Desert by Douglaus Burton Christie
Celebration of Discipline references scripture throughout - the idea that Foster is attempting to create a new Bible is absurd. He is simply showing how Christians throughout the ages have carried out the disciplines that The Bible sets out.
The Church Fathers had a lot of good to say and I would point out that it would be equally unwise to follow all of the reformers' teachings. Example? Luther removed James from his Bible because of its emphasis on works! Eat the meat, leave the bones.
I think it's a question of balance. We can over-emphasise any element of good theology.
I understand concerns because some crazy things are done in the name the Holy Spirit, but we shouldn't reject it all anymore than we reject evangelism because of the Crusades.
These aren't extrabiblical teachings, they're clear, Biblical ways in which God has chosen to meet with us; fasting, meditation, worship, solitude, etc. These are all found in The Bible and are vital to our walk with Jesus.
There are many times I think he is way to fuzzy and tolerant. He won't speak boldly. But, he usually finds an eliquent way to respectfully call people on the carpet. I don't always like it or agree. But I would hardly call him a purveyor of eastern misticism. More importantly he should be first rebuked by a Brother or Sister privately, one on one. If he doesn't see the problem or rejects the criticism then rebuke him publicly. But don't lose your good name impuning others without showing mercy.
I hope that Crosstalk has already contacted Ravi and given him a chance to respond. Because I have listened to him for a long time. He always is going after the some of the toughest issues of the day. I saw him at the Ligonier Contending for the truth conference speak against the emergent church. He is always speaking against Christianity and Eastern misticism getting mixed together. He is however always very careful to not unncessarily slander people, or throw mud.
This is so disheartening. I love Ravi. But if he is sighting people who are obviously not to be trusted for spiritual advice. Especially if he is not going to fully disclose who these people are. I will no longer be able to trust his teaching, or recomend it. I read somewhere before that people were begining to suspect ravi was becoming questionable in his teachings. I sadi no way. I defended his going to the mormon tabernacle. But U have no defense of this. I will be writing him for a response.
robo, please don't take this video to heart. Ravi Zacharias did NOT "recommend" Nouwen's teachings. He mentioned him as an example of someone who has victory over homosexuality & his admiration of Nouwen has to do with the fact that he left cushy positions in the catholic church to live a simple life with the disabled and founded the inclusive methods of services for disabled that we use today and changed millions of disabled people's lives. This video is false witness against Ravi Zacharias.
Perhaps Ravi considers Nouwen a saint because he left prestigious professorships to serve the disabled I guess thats just not as noble as heresy-hunting.
Then again, we cant be sure why Ravi called Nouwen a saint -context is conspicuously absent.
Why cant you simply consider Zacharias to be a man who made a mistake in commending Nouwen? Why drag his name through the mud?
"Perhaps Ravi considers Nouwen a saint because he left prestigious professorships to serve the disabled I guess thats just not as noble as heresy-hunting."
Exactly. Ravi Zacharias does NOT "recommend" Nouwen's teachings, nor does he in any way approve of mixing new age or mysticism with Christianity. Zacharias came OUT of those teachings and is VERY MUCH a BIBLICAL TEACHER. I find these slurs and accusations dispicable and busy-body stirring up contention and distinctly UN Christian.
reincarnation is the basis of all eastern mysticism. Bible clearly tells us that we have only one life. Lucifer is the false-light of inward yogic mysticism, not the True Light of Christ.
mysticism, buddhism, yoga etc. is the left-hand path of the goats. Look up left-hand path on wikipedia to see the characteristics. Christianity is the right-hand path of the sheep.
i practiced mysticism and buddhism and yoga etc. for about 15 years, meeting famous 'masters' around the world. i saw many miracles, had samadhis, eventually attained the enlightenment. Yet when i died, Satan desired my soul, and Christ saved me and gave me a second chance, and raised me up. Jesus Christ is the ONLY way.
alot of stuff in our beliefs wasnt there until the cathos came .look up all the beliefs that they brought into Christianity including some we hold dear to.i dont believe there are things we cant understand about god but i do believe that there are certain things we just dont understand yet.and i believe the more closer you get to him the more he will reveal to you. paul says he pray that we come to the full knowledge of who he is and christ says we will worship the father in spirit and truth
The bible said there would be a great falling away from the faith. Christianity these days is watered down. If you stick to the bible they'll label you old fashion. I hate that!
Although I am currently attending a pentecostal church. I do honestly believe that the Seventh Day Adventist are closer to the Bible than other denominations. I have attended services of SDA many times, whenever I go I always feel like that is where I should be. The biggest convictions for me is why protestants worship on Sunday instead of the Sabbath. The Catholic Church instituted Sunday worship, they claim to have the authority to do so. God wrote the ten commandments with his own finger
did you know the sabbath is not on Saturday its starts like in the mid day of friday and ends the same time on saturday and have you ever read any of there beliefs.and the beliefs of their leader ellen g white?
You obviously dont have a clue what your talking about regarding the Sabbath. The Jews still keep the Sabbath (or Sabbat) and it starts on Friday night at sunset and ends on Saturday at Sunset. The SDA observe the same day same time. The Bible says that the Evening and the Day is really what a day is. right there in Genesis when God created days. You live in the US and have been raised with Midnight staring the day. Thats not how it is in Jewish tradition its always been sunset starts the day
That should have been Shabbat not sabbat. I didnt realize I left out the H. I am also sorry for the first comment of you not having a clue. I should have just said that you are confused, or maybe you got wrong info. I would suggest that you do some research on Jewish days and how they work. I'd rather show you how to get the right info rather than judge you for having the wrong info. So for that I apologize. I ask for your forgiveness. Anyway I'd like to help you find the correct info.
sorry i understand jewish days i was just confused on the time and also got the wrong info on when sda does sabbath and also dont worry about it and thanks for the correct info
regarding the beliefs of SDA I'm familiar with their beliefs. There are a couple that I have trouble with but there are several I have trouble with regarding other denominations as well. every time I go to church on Sunday I'm breaking the 4th commandment. Now most preachers will tell you we aren't under law, but the definition of sin is transgression of the law. The only law that was done away with is ritual / ceremonial law not moral law. If thats were the case no-one would be sinner today.
the problem is denominations that goes against the word of god also. and remember certain things were set up for certain reasons and certain people. i dont go to church or any thing .i seek god on my own and read on my own .i mean fellowship we need but the truth and a relationship with god we need more.and you wont find that in a building or under a title.and actually it was rituals and traditions to.like when paul was talking about circumcision it wont get you to heaven only christ etc...
I completely agree with you on that point. Actually I prefer going to small groups for worship and fellowship. I do believe a lot of modern churches are made to appeal to your emotions. I dont think Arena Churches can give you the personal attention you might need as a Christian. I do agree with you that your relationship with God is priority over where you go to church. The problem is that most people relationship is limited to what they are told by preachers, instead of just talking with God
all that im trying to say is sda was a false prophet who made false predictions.there is know where in the bible where the new covenant christians are told to keep the sabbath.even though theres nothing wrong with it it is not necessary for our salvation like that church teaches
No that would be the Jehova Witness. They teach that Jesus is the archangel Michael. Jehova witness that set dates regarding the end of time. The only date set by SDA was 1844 and that was set as the time for investigative Judgment to begin. That particular date is calculated by events that took place prior and based on what the Bible says as far as days(years) in Prophecy. I do have trouble with the Investigative judgment doctrine but that could be my bias due to the church I was raised in.
So the idea of any aspect of a mystical union with God is false doctrine?? No aspect of Christianity is mystical? I believe so passionately that correct doctrine and scriptural understanding, but is Crosstalk seriously suggesting that a union with God doesn't exist?
The modern church has jetisoned sound doctrine in their rejection of classic Calvinism. They have also tended to embrace Pentecostalism through the Charismatic movement since the 60's. It is no wonder that they also embrace this type of nonsense.
well, what that Priest said in the book, ISNT official church teaching . be careful not to claim a few isolated pockets as representative of the whole. that would be foolish, extremely foolish. Furthermore, there is infact truth in all religons. that doesnt mean that each religon is right. pre scripture writings teach things like do unto others, etc..
I've noticed ALOT of people claiming to be Christians that profess Jesus is not the only way! Unbelievable....Strange days we are in....we won't be here much longer (I hope).
I bought Fosters book off a Christian bookshelf believing it to be ok until I read it back in the 90s. We should steer clear of any seer or catholic visionary and stick to the Bile alone.
2 Timothy 4:3 - For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
I think "Christianity Today" is published by the Billy Graham assoc,.which promotes the Pope and the apostate doctrine of the Catholic Church.

The problem is that most people relationship is limited to what they are told by preachers, instead of just talking with God

all that im trying to say is sda was a false prophet who made false predictions.there is know where in the bible where the new covenant christians are told to keep the sabbath.even though theres nothing wrong with it it is not necessary for our salvation like that church teaches

and they also tech christ is is micheal the archangel.

Leave the catholic nonsense alone

2 Timothy 4:3 - For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
