If you plumb the depths of what Nouwen thinks and teachings, what his worldview consists of and who he supports and what their own worldview is, it is distrurbing why Ravi would label Mr Nouwen with such a label as one fo the greatest saints. People need to wake up and start to discern truth v error. This is really becoming a real big problem in today's world. We are not to worship our leaders, but hold them accountable.

I agree with your point about mysticism BUT you are taking Ravi's words completely out of context. (Why do Christians do this to each other? Listen to his whole lecture and think for yourself!) Ravi was giving a thoughtful response to a question about those who might struggle w/ homosexuality leanings and temptation, which is something Henri Nouwen was reported to have had, but chose never to act upon. Ravi's theology is rock solid.

This talkshow completely misses the point of what Zaccharias was saying. They don't even play the whole video. Nouwen was simply an example to illustrate his point (which this program did not even cover). His point had absolutely nothing to do with mysticism. Yet they use him to prove that he is "fascinated by mystics." That couldn't be further from the truth. I find Mother Theresa inspiring but does that mean I am fascinated by mysticism in the Catholic Church? No.

I like Ravi and listen to him often. Although I'd like to hear his response to the criticism, the fact remains that he did endorse Nouwen as one of the greatest saints in recent years. If they overstate his position, that is, indeed, wrong. However, as one who believes in sola gratia and sola scriptura, he does need to answer for his promotion of those who example otherwise. I think that's their main point, though perhaps muddled by an enthusiastic defense.

This program's premise makes a serious extrapolative jump. To reiterate my point, I would say as Ravi did that Mother Theresa is one of the greatest saints in recent memory if the context of the discussion is say, humanitarian relief for starving children in foreign nations. Does that mean I endorse the Catholic church and everything they believe in? No. But I guess these people would be complaining that I was "endorsing" her "apostate views." Ravi is not in the wrong here at all.

I think it's going a bit far to put Ravi in there. Now of course I have my bias, I love Ravi, BUT more than that I love Jesus and i Love Truth. Ravi did indeed make a COSTLY mistake by calling that guy a great saint but that video is old and he is a GROWING believer. As stated in James 3, his judgment will be stricter, so the best thing we can do is PRAY for him. The fact of the matter is that ALL of Ravi's books and teachings say one thing: Jesus is the ONLY way to the Father.

my complaint against Silva has nothing to do with his indictment of soft evangelical theology, but the fact is that historical Christian mysticism, from the desert fathers to the Rhineline mystics took its lead from biblical models and teachings. Just because its not "reformed theology" from the sixteenth or nineteenth century does not make it hearsay. I think it's a question of balance. We can over-emphasise any element of good theology.

I understand concerns because some crazy things are done in the name the Holy Spirit, but we shouldn't reject it all anymore than we reject evangelism because of the Crusades.

These aren't extrabiblical teachings, they're clear, Biblical ways in which God has chosen to meet with us; fasting, meditation, worship, solitude, etc. These are all found in The Bible and are vital to our walk with Jesus.

There are many times I think he is way to fuzzy and tolerant. He won't speak boldly. But, he usually finds an eliquent way to respectfully call people on the carpet. I don't always like it or agree. But I would hardly call him a purveyor of eastern misticism. More importantly he should be first rebuked by a Brother or Sister privately, one on one. If he doesn't see the problem or rejects the criticism then rebuke him publicly. But don't lose your good name impuning others without showing mercy.

He always is going after the some of the toughest issues of the day. I saw him at the Ligonier Contending for the truth conference speak against the emergent church. Exactly. Ravi Zacharias does NOT "recommend" Nouwen's teachings, nor does he in any way approve of mixing new age or mysticism with Christianity. Zacharias came OUT of those teachings and is VERY MUCH a BIBLICAL TEACHER. I find these slurs and accusations dispicable and busy-body stirring up contention and distinctly UN Christian.

Although I am currently attending a pentecostal church. I do honestly believe that the Seventh Day Adventist are closer to the Bible than other denominations. I have attended services of SDA many times, whenever I go I always feel like that is where I should be. The biggest convictions for me is why protestants worship on Sunday instead of the Sabbath. The Catholic Church instituted Sunday worship, they claim to have the authority to do so. God wrote the ten commandments with his own finger

regarding the beliefs of SDA I'm familiar with their beliefs. There are a couple that I have trouble with but there are several I have trouble with regarding other denominations as well. every time I go to church on Sunday I'm breaking the 4th commandment. Now most preachers will tell you we aren't under law, but the definition of sin is transgression of the law. The only law that was done away with is ritual / ceremonial law not moral law. If thats were the case no-one would be sinner today.

I dont think Arena Churches can give you the personal attention you might need as a Christian. I do agree with you that your relationship with God is priority over where you go to church. No that would be the Jehova Witness. They teach that Jesus is the archangel Michael. Jehova witness that set dates regarding the end of time. The only date set by SDA was 1844 and that was set as the time for investigative Judgment to begin. That particular date is calculated by events that took place prior and based on what the Bible says as far as days(years) in Prophecy. I do have trouble with the Investigative judgment doctrine but that could be my bias due to the church I was raised in.
