@DXBryan100 probably lost their jobs when the Hornets moved to New Orleans in 2002.
However, at the time, this was considered a risky trade for the Lakers as we were trading away our best center at the time (Vlade Divac). But luckily, Jerry West struck gold again and got us an all-time great!
kobe won his high school state championship in an arena just 15-20 minutes away from my work! this is the arena in most of the highlights in this video. i still have the local newspaper from that day 15 years ago. this is your world kobe.
congratulations charlotte. you traded away the dude who made the nba his personal playground for 15 years following this night and he's not slowing down anytime soon.
@himminy the worst trade in the nba history!!! i mean, they traded one of the arguably best 3 to play the game... im sure the staff of the hornets was mysteriously murdered or smth some years later.... congrats!!!
although #13 might seem ridiculous, you have to remember he went straight from high school. 17 years, never played on college level (less physical and all-around competition), not even fully grown body yet, tons of unknown quantities. whoever picked him took a huge risk. and most high-draft-pick club simply need a sudden and comparatively certain push of quality in their roster. it all makes sense.
@sayanroy36 its so funny and sad when ppl say these kind of things like make fun of age or appearance, i mean don't they know that one day they will be same age?? loll idiots.
oh cry me a river. its youtube, chances are 99% of what you read are troll comments. i was only clowning and comparing to some others, it was the most harmless comment ever
@ahmedwali4ever Allen Iverson. Kobe was a 17 year old high School kid. A high school guard had never been drafted before (only big men) and KG was the first one in 20 years (people count Kemp, but he actually went to college -Kentucky, then Trinity JC - but couldn't become eligible to play). Also, there were rumors that Bryant would refuse to play for most teams and was already pegged to go to the Lakers.
@ChrisSmooveismyson You gotta remember though that A.I. started his rookie season. Kobe came off the bench his first two seasons backing up Eddie Jones.
Comments read "He should've been #1 overall blah blah". You guys are only saying that because you are living in the present and have seen what Kobe is capable of. Back then, the only knowledge all NBA teams had of him was that he was a young kid who was good in high school. Some high schools put shitty players on their varsity! Or some players are great in high school but not college, just like some are good in college but not the NBA.
As a NBA GM would you risk your pick on a high schooler? NO
@Aerochalklate, you mean other than the fact that he shaved his head? It was and still is incredibly common for basketball players to shave their heads. Not sure why it seems weird to you.
@HighDefJams rumors have a way of spreading like wildfire...there is simply NO evidence that this is true. More importantly, its hilarious how that rumor spread when in reality kobe had NO leverage...so he doesn't sign a contract? That would put the onus on kobe...there is no truth to that whatsoever...
@HighDefJams Well, Hornets knew what they got themselves into. And they knew that could leverage Kobe to get someone from Lakers because Lakers too want Kobe. They can just simply skip Kobe and get Nash or Stojakovic but they didn't. Please don't put the blame on Kobe, it's all business. People perceived this as Lakers took advantage but forgot that Hornets too had their own agenda.
@DrifterZDK The trade was in place before the draft. The Hornets never had any intention of drafting Bryant. They worked a deal with the Lakers before the draft where the Lakers would tell them who to pick if their target (which turned out to be Bryant) was still on the board.
@DAMUSICMAN222 And Kobe is the greatest Laker of all time lol. Iverson was obviously better back then. But Kobe was the surprise of the future when he put work in work ethic and became the best player of his generation.
@TheCousinShow1 Kobe wouldn't have played for the Hornets, before the 1996 draft Kobe pretty much made it clear he wouldn't play for anyone but the Lakers. That's why Kobe was picked 13th and traded to the Lakers. If Kobe was open to playing for whoever drafted him he would have been a top 5 pick.
However, Bill Branch, the Hornets' head scout at the time, said that the Hornets agreed to trade their draft selection to the Lakers before picking Bryant. The teams agreed to the trade the day before the draft and the Lakers did not tell the Hornets who to select until five minutes before the pick was made. Branch said that prior to the trade agreement, the Hornets never even considered drafting Bryant. Let's not get it twisted that Kobe went Elway or Steve Francis now...
The Hornets agreed to trade Kobe to the Lakers before the pick. Kobe made it clear that he only wanted to play for the Lakers. He did not want to play for the hometown Sixers. That is why fans boo the hell out of him when he comes to Philly.
Kobe's smiling widely because he knew he was going to get traded to a big market team. Really sucks as a sports fan when you see some arrogant guy get drafted into the big leagues and just demand to play for specific teams, ala John Elway and Eli Manning.
But to Kobe's credit, at least he had the courtesy to smile, despite being drafted for a team he refused to play for. Seeing the disgruntled, uncomfortable smile when Eli Manning was holding up the Chargers jersey was pathetic.
