love this gun safety video.grew up in a home with guns and they were not taboo.we learned safety.i went out into the "world" and almost became scared of guns ,due to the miss handling i saw around me.every person that chooses to own needs to pass on the responsibility .thanks NUTNFANCY!
Nice little video. I live in a state that is officially terrified of all guns. My own father was afraid to let up even see the few guns he owned (war prizes BTW) and so we never were taught gun safety at home at all. The result: more people who grew up afraid of guns and convinced that guns are why there is violent crime. I know better now - better late than never!
Teach your kids about guns, even if you don't own one. They will be safer for it.
ive been a victem of being shot by gun accidents -.177 pellet gun into the foot- and now im re learning gun safty....so is the genious who leans loaded guns on peoples feet....
Awesome vid man. I'll most probably never ever handle any type of firearm less Malaysia changes its firearm laws but hey, who knows. Again, great vid man.
I wouldn't store a gun loaded... partially for safety, but mainly for the gun. The magazine works by spring tension, too much load on the springs can damage them and cause failures to feed.

hey nutnfancy im angry about ppl who dont care if they hit you or not i was in a mine with my dad we were mineing in our hole 5 seconds after getting set up i got hit on the head with a pellet from a birdshot shot gun unclear to what guage and didnt bleed but it hurt and heard the bang then we shot 5 shots from a 44. in the air they continued to fire i wanted to beat sense into them but we indured more than an hour of terrifing wjistling and gunshots assholes...

dude gun safety is so easy to learn..in black ops you can fire two pistols and not have there be any recoil and they dont even go off unless you pull the trigger!!!
storing loaded is ok? if a soldier can reload a gun in a war zone you can load a maggazine, use a speed loader, stripper clip, load by hand and so on when needed it only takes a second to load and cock.
There is one best practice that you didn't touch on. When handing a firearm to someone else I prefer to perform my own check to make sure I'm not handing a loaded weapon to someone and then hand it to them with the action open and magazine out. This is especially important when you are unaware if the other person is well versed in gun safety.
When I was a little kid my Uncle who was in the military gave me a toy pellet gun (one that shoots little plastic beads) and he taught me gun safety even with that, and then I was given an air rifle when I was older and was better prepared to handle it safely. But a year ago I went and played paintball with some friends of mine and I was really really shocked at how bad their weapon safety was. None of them kept their fingers off the trigger and I even had to push barrels out of my face at times
Anyways, the best way to remember the 4 safety rules are:
1) Yes, A weapon is always LOADED! Never point a weapon at anything you are not willing to kill or destroy. 2) If a safety is present do not take it off until you intent to fire 3) Keep a straight trigger finger until you intend to fire. 4) Finally, BE AWARE of your target's environment and its background. I just thought I'd chime in my experience with weapons. Thanks
to check the chamber is to lock the upper receiver and place your finger in the chamber. This is tactile and the nerve endings on your finger will tell you if there is a round in the chamber. This is good especially when there is low light or a faulty ejector. It's not an argument just another method. (break)
I know you've got a lot of experience and this show but I would like to add the safety rules that were taught to me by the military. I play COD but by no means think that that game is remotely close to real combat. I'd like to say that I think your show is very entertaining and I like to watch it. I do not subscribe to any kind of shooting style but safety is universal. Racking the upper receiver (slide) numerous times for ME is not necessary. One of the ways (break)
@crplll exactly. NRA rules say that if it's a firearm, you always follow the same rules. a firearm is something that uses high pressure gas to expel a projectile out of a barrel. so, basically, you are dead right, those toys are still firearms, still dangerous
My father taught my brother and I gun safety at a young age. About 6-7. It worked for us. I love and respect guns and those who use them properly for good. "law enforcement, out troops, or home defense. Thanks for all your videos. Your great!!!!!!!
I grew up with guns in the household and even when I was playing with toy guns my grandpa would tell me not to point it at someone... Sounds kind of weird, but bashed that one in my head so much, I personally never shot anyone by accident *lol* (and not INTENTIONALLY either - Omg *haha* ;oP )! So, for me your rules of gun safety sound perfect ;o) !
Thank you for helping to eliminate ignorance among gun users. A rule i would use, would be when dealing with handguns, it is only to be handled when the clip is ejected, the chamber is clear and empty, and that the slide is locked back.
Nice video. I too have seen many instances of unsafe handling in gun stores. Most of the time is it a new person asking to handle the guns while asking a million questions. It is obvious they have no firearms training experience.
Thank you for the video. I am very serious about gun safety, and have been through countless courses and seen many videos, yet still watch them almost daily so that these things are second nature to me. I appreciate you educating everyone, and I found your video to be outstanding.
see i think most people who don't know gun safety have not been in the scouts or the military. It don't mater if u have red rider or a m82a1 50cal all guns can kill. ok maybe not the red rider, but u need to know gun safety before u get a gun.
the answer to the question "in a place such as a gun store, where would be the safest direction to keep the gun pointed?" is where the bullet can do the least amount of damage. the direction doesn't always have to be towards the floor to be the safest direction.
@bonkersbananas2010 This is a pet peeve with me. I find that keeping a gun pointed down (as in downward, towards the floor) to be no problem at all, but I have never been in a gun store that followed that simple procedure. I'm always ducking and weaving in gun stores due to customers, and even sales persons, waving guns around. Unloaded or not, it just makes me uncomfortable. -- Veri
Maybe it would be a good idea to slowly show how to make sure the gun is unloaded instead of flying through it. Most people don't even know how to release the magazine.
I wish loading learning gun safety was part of buying a weapon. I know someone personally who constantly disregard these rules. Stupid fucker has fired his weapon accidentally SIX or more times in an apartment. Fucked up his tv, shot his dresser twice, a door frame through a wall, carpet, his walker, and one other which he has no idea where it went. In an apartment with children next door :(. Really wish he cared for the safety of others. He keeps his firearms loaded and no holster/case.
My parents never taught me about gun safety. However, they also don't like guns at all so we never had one in the house. I am glad that I am taking the initiative to learn about guns and how to handle them safely, and I am also grateful that people like you take the initiative to make videos instructing others on gun safety. I think it is very important to understand these rules thoroughly before you ever pick up a gun for the first time.
Gun safety was next on my fathers list right after I could walk. Its very important to familiarize children about guns and gun safety starting at a very young age. This way when they handle weapons as adults, everything is instinctual
i love guns, i know the safety and am safe with firearms. but to be honest i think EVERY gun owner and/or gun shooter should take the gun safety course for example in order to even go hunting(legally) you have to take the hunter safety course which i think is very smart, im not saying this will "idiot proof" all injuries or deaths.
I was raised on a farm and taught from an early age how to handle weapons. I totally agree with everything you say. Education is the key to gun safety.
when i was a kid i was so intrigued by the knives my mom used that i cut my hand and she did exactly what youre talking about, after i'd got a band aid she picked me up and showed me each knife individually until i was done looking and wasnt curious anymore. ignorance can cause harm
When I was little, my father taught me gun safety, and I'm really thankful of him. One of my classmate's dad treat it like taboo. That kid almost lost his left eye just because of airsoft guns.
The principles of Respect, Full awareness and No second chances is useful in ALL aspects of life!
i have been taught gun saftey by my uncle but i was able to catch some more by watching the video and i thank you for taking your time out of reviewing guns to teaching practical common sense
this is a great safety video. I thought I knew enough guns to be safe, but I actually learned something. My heart kind of sank at one point because I was thinking into the future about when I have a child of my own and the fear of me not doing a good enough job of explaining gun safety really scares me.
@IVosc0p3d: You would never keep a gun loaded. Why? If someone finds it, how hard do you think it will be to find your ammunition? Or just get their own? I don't care if you store the gun without a magazine in it, bullets are easy to come by, and if someone has found your gun then they can place a bullet they acquired elsewhere in the chamber. One round is all it takes. The gun itself is the dangerous part.
@nhpivotlk I am serious when I say I would stay well away from a friend like that...he sounds like a complete idiot who may possibly get someone killed. His attitude about it is extremely creepy too. --- Veri
This is a great video, the only rule I would add to the end of the list (something I feel strongly about), though you convey this rule without saying it, is that these above rules should be taught to those that you see mishandling guns or those who do not know. I feel part of our obligation to handle guns safely is to teach others to do so (as you do so very well in this video), and the inferred, final rule in this list is to encourage safe gun handling to all those around you.
My grandfather was once at a hardware store (That also sold firearms). He was just looking at tools next to a phone booth and down the isle a sales rep. was showing a young guy a rifle. The young person started to examine the rifle when it discharged. The bullet landed in a phone book under 2 feet away from my grandfathers head. By all accounts, I'm lucky to be here and I hope that more people will learn, understand and respect safe firearm handling. Thanks Nutn for another great video.
Good video. I'd be a bit wary of storing a gun loaded unless the whole purpose of having it were to have it instantly ready to fire, but I certainly agree that kids should be taught gun safety if there's a gun in the house. Just declaring something off limits is a sure way to get kids to reach for the forbidden fruit.
My father started my brothers and I in gun safety when we were five, None of us have ever had a accidental discharge, Though I was in someones presence when they accidentally fired a handgun in an apartment, creepy thing is that just before he pulled the trigger I started to warn him that he hadn't checked the chamber. Did about $2500 damage and thank God no one was injured.
i totally agree, the only reason there are gun accidents is because people dont get taught at a young age.
kids who are curious will play with your gun if they can get to it. but if you teach them about it, and get rid of the curiosity, you could leave your gun out on the living room table, and all they would do is say "hey dad, you left your gun out. thats not smart."
been watching your videos the past weeks and i find it amazing where you get the time to do all of this and want to share it for free. I find you a very intelligent guy. You are a good person! Thanks!
Nutnfancy I am really enjoying your videos and learning a lot. I plan on carrying soon when we get the cc law passed. My question is it ok to carry with one in the chamber. Do you recomend it or not? Thanks again for your videos.
Thanks for posting this. I'm sure it seems obvious to most of us who have been around guns a long time, but that's because my dad went over safe gun handling practices with me when I was a kid. When taught to respect a firearm and learn the proper way to handle it, I believe gun related accidents drop down hugely
What Nutnfancy says here may be o.k. in the U.S., not sure, but loaded storage of a handgun is not legal in Canada, check your local laws. To safety check a pistol: remove the magazine, then open the action and visually inspect the breach area and barrel to ensure there are no rounds. Repeated racking of the slide as shown in the vid serves no purpose and is not a substitute for visual inspection. You would fail a Canadian gun permit test if you used this method, just saying....
Everyone IN THE WORLD that has ever/will ever handle a projectile weapon needs to watch and understand this video or an equivalent. I was almost shot in basic training by some dipshit that didn't understand these basics. Swung a loaded M16 directly at me with his finger on the trigger and the safety off. Luckily an instructor was next to him and ripped the weapon out of his hands, or I might not be here today.
the whole video is great, and i love the part about the children.....as common as a fork on the table...couldnt of said it better my self... 5ive stars
@IMFDB allways blame it on the video game!..why?? there are films to where they dual wield pistols and that can have effect on people to. but no they allway blame it on the video games!
Tried teaching my girlfriend to shoot a shotgun this passed weekend, it was safety checked multiple times before handing it over. Prior instructions I had emphasized keeping your finger off the trigger and never pointing the gun towards anything you don't want to destroy. After handing it over to her to show he proper position of the firearm, she would not hold the gun without her finger resting on the trigger, and until she can master that she's never getting a loaded shotgun.
@benmodo i would recommend starting with a .22. starting off with a shotgun, even a .410, is a bit much, especially if she has never handled a gun in her life. the first gun i ever fired was a 12 gauge, and to this day i struggle not to flinch when i shoot ANY kind of gun.
Great video. I agree about the kids thing. If they learn what a gun is and how to use it from a parent and not hollywood, the world would be a lot safer.
Hey nutn, I'd just like to tell you about a course for children called "self rescue".
It's basically a method of pool training that teaches babies and toddlers how to save themselves from drowning by floating on their back and turning around only to swim to safety, flipping to their backs to breath again.
Your theory may just be correct, children simply MUST be taught about risk, it should be mandatory for every child to receive not only training but learn the dangers of irresponsible usage.
Well Done!!!! I was raised with one rule "treat as if its always loaded". When I was a teen, I got my stepmothers 380 colt out to show my cousin. Not thinking, I pulled the slide back discharged the round then removed the magazine...duh! My father caught me, I said it was unloaded, he pulled the slide back, and the round fell out. 8-( if it wasn't for the rule of "treat as if its always loaded" who knows what would've happened. My father then stressed that was the reason He taught me that rule,
I take it by "simplex" lock you mean you have a v-line safe/box or something similar?
You should REALLY do a video review on those boxes, and why they are far more preferable over anything electronic (batteries, complication), 'biometric' (bs) or keys (too slow).
Gun owners who keep guns loaded, even if they are alone, should at least have some type of safe/box to put the gun in. Obviously it must be quick access, reliable, and simple... in my opinion there are VERY few out there.
Some idiot at my local gun range let go of the hammer on his gun thinking it was unloaded while putting his gun at the front counter , the gun went off and shot some random women in the butt while she was shopping in the store, Big .45 in her ass all because he was a moron.
@DaddyDevilKingGhost When I shoot with anyone, even if I have already shot with them, if I have any doubts that this is not ingrained I will repeat this list. I nail people on muzzling, I nail people on finger in the trigger guard, I nail my hunter friends for should sling a gun and then bending over without thinking of backstop, I nail folks on not putting the safety on. Honestly when it comes to life and death you can never be a nag. You are saving life and limb by being responsible.
Me and my step bro found my dads pistol and because this is only the second ive held a gun i was exploring it and stuff and i almost pulled the trigger. I dont know what stopped me but i later found out it was loaded with the safety off. If i pulled the trigger i couldve killed somebody....
@mybandiswasted I was lucky, when I was 12 & went to live with my uncle the first thing he did was take me out back and show me the destructive power of his handguns and rifle. He was not as detailed as say the safety course I took later on, or say Nutn has been here, but he instilled 2 things, 1 always treat it as its loaded, and 2 its a killing machine that means it requires more respect and responsibility then anything else. Lets just say after seeing 44 mag and 308 emptied, I got it.
I declare that everyone on youtube that owns a gun (if he choses to-) will make the most AWESOME video of his gun will get the title "Honor gunslinger". for more details on the contest email me at stanleythedog@walla.com
Example of stupid: When I was a kid I access to our family 22s and as a youth (10/11) I would go shot cans during the summers. I was alone cleaning the revolver while watching a western matinee... when I started playing quick draw... the gun was unloaded... and then bam... I shot a hole 2 inches above the TV, it went threw the wall... to the kitchen. I am now in mid 30s and gun safety is a topic that I have started talking about with my 3 and 6 year old. RESPECT is key.
i got a story for "always treat your gun as loaded". i was at my friends house with my brother and a couple of friends watching a movie. The friend that lived there had a few airsoft guns and we were messing around with them. the guns were unloaded and had no clips in them so we were just dry firing them at things. my friend picked up one of the guns and shot it at my brothers head. the gun shot a pellet and hit my brother about half an inch from his eye. close call...
Great video by the way....yes i would say teach your kids of gun safety because this one time when i was in grade one and i went over to my friends house and he took me into his moms bedroom and he went into his moms night table and pulled out a gun and he pointed it at me and at the time i didn't totally know what to think...and now i am fifteen and now that i think about it i could have been shot and dead..he ment it to be playfull just saying
Nice video and speaking of safety this 1 guy in a video I was watch said when he was young him and his friend got shotgun shell and made roming candles out of them and he looked inside the shell and it blow up in his face. Then he's blaming the NRA for that because there were no laws or something like that.
@nutnfancy I have a friend who is a total IDIOT when it comes to firearms safety. I just purchased a new Ruger 10/22 and showed it to him. His first reaction was "woah dude cool!" He pointed it at me and laughed, then turned the rifle upside down and started to pretend to shoot things. I was amazed at how stupid he is. I went hunting with the same guy last year and he pointed the barrel at my face with a loaded chamber and his finger on the trigger. He could benefit from this video VERY greatly.
@eriequiet I'm sorry that happened to you. Don't feel too bad, accidents happen, and very often end in tragedy. If I was in your situation, I'd, believe it or not, consider myself lucky. Any other direction and I may not be speaking with you now. Mistakes with guns are the worst, but there's no changing the past, and as long as everyone is okay in the long run, all you can do is accept it,
Part 2: I was astounded by the stupidity they were trying to teach me and I flat out refused to point the firearm at my face, i ended up using a cleaning rod to check instead.
Part 1: I'm in the canadian army and due to stupid laws here I needed to take a civilian safety course to be able to shoot at civilian ranges. The way they teach our civilians to safety check a firearm is absolutely retarded. They say to remove the magazine, open the chamber and inspect the bore and magazine feeding path which is fine. But after that, they teach everyone to physically point the barrel at their face and look down the barrel to see if anything is in there.
Right before i shot a gun for the first time, a friend of mine told me '' Victor, the gun will always be loaded, even if the magazine is out,the chamber is checked , and if it's has the safety on. '' And I ask all of you, FOLLOW THIS RULE!!! Never trust yourself.
All good points with this video. Horseplay + any gun = accident, the only assumption you should be making is that every gun is loaded. Teaching kids about guns makes sense as well - it takes away the curiosity and the taboo appeal to disobey dad and mom when they want to rebel.
I'm 18 years old and my dad doesn't believe in owning a REAL gun. But I WAS taught gun safety by others. Ive begun to teach my 3 year old brother gun safety using my airsoft guns.
I went to a pawn shop around a week ago and initiated these teachings at the gun counter when i was checking out some marlins, and of course nothing bad happened. Thanks Nutnfancy!
Are you a Federal Agent or other Leo? Because you have a Sig p228 ( My favorite gun ) and you said that "We will resist the shot at any time possible.". Just wandering if so that's awesome!
you can never be safe enough.. lesson learned the hardest way possible.... I know gun safety inside and out and have actually taught it in the past... which makes the new .45 hole in my hand all that harder to explain.... for me the hardest part is forgiving myself... I feel like I have no place in Tnp at the moment..............be careful guys, that gun is just waiting for a chance to hurt you...
@eriequiet I agree totaly with you.Same thing happened to me but with a 9mm hole in my finger.Thank god nobody got hurt(2 people with me in same room).Luckily the "POINT IN SAFE DIRECTION" rule was like an instinct in my head.Hope your hand is doing well!!!
@eriequiet Oh erie, I'm so sorry! Don't feel like you don't have a place in TNP, ever. You do, and always will. Hope you heal quickly, and do NOT beat yourself up. -- Veri
@nutnfancy thanks veri.. i understand the sentiment... just feels impossible to not beat myself up... especially since this sheep dog cant enlist now... I dont even know what to do with this.... keeping it private acomplishes nothing... sharing does nothing but shame myself....input?
@eriequiet I disagree about sharing does nothing. Nutn has received letters, newspaper articles and even very graphic pictures of people who have had accidents with their handguns. I have never ONCE seen him reply harshly to people who share their stories because he considers them amazing and personal learning experiences. If other people can learn from it, there is some good that can be done there.
I love ALL your Vids!!!! This one is Your BEST!!!! I agree 10000% My boy is awesome with firearms, treats them safely, and has been handling all types since 6 yrs. of age. Education is the best medicine!!! Firearms are such a Joyous tool USED CORRECTLY, any misuse results in tragedy. Keep em coming!!!
i just got back from a gun show and it was crazy how many people werent safe with the guns. i only saw a handful of fingers out of the trigger guard and i cant even begin to tell you how many times i got muzzled today. it was shocking
love this gun safety video.grew up in a home with guns and they were not taboo.we learned safety.i went out into the "world" and almost became scared of guns ,due to the miss handling i saw around me.every person that chooses to own needs to pass on the responsibility .thanks NUTNFANCY!

@crplll exactly. NRA rules say that if it's a firearm, you always follow the same rules. a firearm is something that uses high pressure gas to expel a projectile out of a barrel. so, basically, you are dead right, those toys are still firearms, still dangerous

A rule i would use, would be when dealing with handguns, it is only to be handled when the clip is ejected, the chamber is clear and empty, and that the slide is locked back.

the answer to the question "in a place such as a gun store, where would be the safest direction to keep the gun pointed?" is where the bullet can do the least amount of damage. the direction doesn't always have to be towards the floor to be the safest direction.

Question - in a place such as a gun store, where would be the safest direction to keep the gun pointed?
bonkersbananas2010 10 months ago
@bonkersbananas2010 This is a pet peeve with me. I find that keeping a gun pointed down (as in downward, towards the floor) to be no problem at all, but I have never been in a gun store that followed that simple procedure. I'm always ducking and weaving in gun stores due to customers, and even sales persons, waving guns around. Unloaded or not, it just makes me uncomfortable. -- Veri

@nutnfancy well my local gun store is on a second floor so that to could spell disaster........ but it is the safest direction.......

Yes, Oh My God!
Just yesterday I saw a store clerk take a pistol, rack it, point it at a window, and dry fire it! WITHOUT CHECKING THE CHAMBER!

I think it is very important to understand these rules thoroughly before you ever pick up a gun for the first time.

i love guns, i know the safety and am safe with firearms. but to be honest i think EVERY gun owner and/or gun shooter should take the gun safety course for example in order to even go hunting(legally) you have to take the hunter safety course which i think is very smart, im not saying this will "idiot proof" all injuries or deaths.

IVosc0p3d 1 year ago
@IVosc0p3d: You would never keep a gun loaded. Why? If someone finds it, how hard do you think it will be to find your ammunition? Or just get their own? I don't care if you store the gun without a magazine in it, bullets are easy to come by, and if someone has found your gun then they can place a bullet they acquired elsewhere in the chamber. One round is all it takes. The gun itself is the dangerous part.
v3mp7 1 year ago
@v3mp7 keeping the gun unloaded means there is less stress on the magazine springs, reducing the risk of stoppage.

Just declaring something off limits is a sure way to get kids to reach for the forbidden fruit.

i totally agree, the only reason there are gun accidents is because people dont get taught at a young age.
kids who are curious will play with your gun if they can get to it. but if you teach them about it, and get rid of the curiosity, you could leave your gun out on the living room table, and all they would do is say "hey dad, you left your gun out. thats not smart."

Tried teaching my girlfriend to shoot a shotgun this passed weekend, it was safety checked multiple times before handing it over. Prior instructions I had emphasized keeping your finger off the trigger and never pointing the gun towards anything you don't want to destroy. After handing it over to her to show he proper position of the firearm, she would not hold the gun without her finger resting on the trigger, and until she can master that she's never getting a loaded shotgun.
benmodo 1 year ago
@benmodo i would recommend starting with a .22. starting off with a shotgun, even a .410, is a bit much, especially if she has never handled a gun in her life. the first gun i ever fired was a 12 gauge, and to this day i struggle not to flinch when i shoot ANY kind of gun.

My father then stressed that was the reason He taught me that rule,
itguy46176 1 year ago
It is also very easy to
1) load and chambered a pistol with the hammer back
2) turned on the safety
3) holstered it
4) draw the pistol with finger in trigger guard
5) the shirt/belt/holster knocked the safety off in panic
6) proceed with shooting your own feet/ leg while your finger brush through the clothes and hit on the trigger
(finger off the trigger until ready to shoot/ after you aquired/confirmed target)
sometaaw 1 year ago
Same with knifes.
1.) Always treat a knife as if it's sharp.
2.) Never let the sharp side face your body. I cut my hand cleaning my kitchen knife because I failed to respect how dangerous it can be.
3.) If somebody hands you a knife it should be handle your direction.
4.) Don't be stupid, see #2
5.) Backstop, should be cutting board or something.
6.) Teach Children, they will find knifes, they need to know safety.
7.) Storing a knife sharp is okay, just don't store them blade side up.
Khyrid 1 year ago
I take it by "simplex" lock you mean you have a v-line safe/box or something similar?
You should REALLY do a video review on those boxes, and why they are far more preferable over anything electronic (batteries, complication), 'biometric' (bs) or keys (too slow).
Gun owners who keep guns loaded, even if they are alone, should at least have some type of safe/box to put the gun in. Obviously it must be quick access, reliable, and simple... in my opinion there are VERY few out there.

BrandonEclipse 1 year ago
Part 1: I'm in the canadian army and due to stupid laws here I needed to take a civilian safety course to be able to shoot at civilian ranges. The way they teach our civilians to safety check a firearm is absolutely retarded. They say to remove the magazine, open the chamber and inspect the bore and magazine feeding path which is fine. But after that, they teach everyone to physically point the barrel at their face and look down the barrel to see if anything is in there.
