why didn't the Calvary just break the enemy's lines? they just went around em!

i'm guessing cuz they trying to get away from the arrows. If they stop and try to break through the front line, the force in the back have to stand behind and take incoming arrows. And when the calvary enter the trap the infantry that follow them have to also follow em, cuz if they stop and fight , they will get seperate from the calvary and commander.
