thanks for this video. im sure im going to watch it a lot. gun safety (or lack there of) scares me to death. i absolutly cannot take any chances with my firearms or my family and i hope that i can be mindful of these rules 110% of the time.
On another note, it's great being on the side of youtube where the average grammar level exceeds that of a typical five year-old with intelligence to match.
I heard a story from one instructor once. Here, they are trained to unload a gun in following steps: Remove a magazine, empty a chamber, dry fire at safe direction for safety test. But he did that dry fire on hes fellow officers head all the time. Well, it might have worked well for hundreds of times before, but THIS time i guess he did a mistake at unloading gun, mixed up sequence, forgot to empty chamber, who knows what. And result was: "*boom* headshot!", nothing funny or cool about it.
Simple and dead nuts on. I'm in my 40's and as a kid these were the rules. Why can't I point my cap gun at the cat or sis dad? That's a gun boy. Words to live by.
What do you mean by "point" a gun at you don't want to destroy. A gun stationary on a table, can someone walk in front of that? Or a gun in a case in the back of a car, should it be stacked vertically with the muzzle down?
The simplicity of the advise is what throws off many people. We all are guilty of HUA (head up ass) from time to time. Some think that control is on their side and take their life and others for granted.
It's: "Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not WILLING to destroy". Not don't point the muzzle at anything you don't WANT to destroy". I'm ok with shooting a hole in the ground but I don't want to. I don't mind if the muzzle crosses my fence say, but I am not out to shoot it. Big difference. There are plenty of things I could handle having shot, vs. want to shoot.
@backstyck I like that! I am so paranoid about being sure my gun is unloaded (when I want it to be unloaded) I usually rack it at least 2-3 times then visually inspect the chamber and then stink my finger in it and feel for sure there is not a round. Those bullet gremlins are some mean little shits and have a way of magically putting bullets in guns you thought were clear!
@happy543210 depends what kind of firearm you are using... I do this with my shotguns and bolt action rifles, but I DONT with my mini14 & other auto-loaders... it's a garand style action so you can see very clearly whether it is loaded or unloaded... The bolt on that sucker could break your finger if you let it slam on you!
@CornMakesWhiskey I wouldn't call it paranoia, but several full racks of the slide followed by a visual inspection ensures my that I've safely unloaded my weapon. Failure to go through this ritual of mine caused a less-than-cautious friend to put a hole in his furniture and the resulting shrapnel through a bystander's leg (not to mention scaring the bejeebuss out of the rest of the household). It takes less than a second to rack the slide. WELL worth the time invested, people! Stay safe. :)
@AuraStudios Good to know I'm not alone. Lol. As easy and intuitive as gun safety can be, it's astounding how often it's completely ignored. On another thought, if everyone followed gun safety rules properly, there would likely be less reason in the public eye to attack the rights of gun owners.
@backstyck no doubt it's all the terrorists, criminals, and idiots that give respectful gun owners a terrible reputation. you wouldn't be any less careful with vehicle safety.
Love how Clint says "pushes the trigger" when people traditionally say "pull the trigger." "Push the trigger" is a very underrated phrase that causes 80% of non accurate shots on a handgun.
The marines use the world "shoot" instead of "destroy". I find that word to make more sense. I intend to shoot a steel target. I don't intend to destroy it because I know my bullet CAN'T. I intend to shoot a paper target. I think it would be a little dramatic to stay I intend to DESTROY a paper target. And for that matter, you snap in and dry fire all the time sighting in on targets with no ammo--there is not even an intent to shoot!!! This rule gets violated all the time--legitimately!!!
if you are at the range and don't practice proper "weapon safety". guys like me are laughing at you and will probably come up to you and get you "right"
@MyOscarMeyerIsOnFire he'd have to be on drugs to pull some shit like that one me, anytime you are around firearms you have to be on alert. i live in Georgia and firearm laws are very lax here, but there is a reason for that. we all know what we are doing, i pity you for living in such an area that you described. most likely inner-city.........urban.
@jdymes101 I'm down south...and im not talking about Georgia son. I pity the fool that makes dumbass assumptions on youtube too and I'm no, I'm not Mr. T you clown.
A few years ago in the news there was a story about how a local gang lord shot himself in the head, similar to your story about the police officer. He was in a night club, showing off his gun. He removed the magazine, didn't clear the chamber, put it to his head and pulled the trigger.
Guns aren't really used here except the odd shotgun owned by a farmer, so one might expect gun knowledge to not be prevalent, but still...
I wish everyone followed those 4 rules. I recently met a customer / friend of mine to drop off a computer that I had fixed for him. He was excited to show me his new lcp with Wallet/stealth holster. He draws it out of his front pocket and points it straight at me. Jesus H, I kept my composure and politely told him that I hope , that he at least did not have one chambered. He did not but the fully magazine was in there and I was not a happy camper.
I was lucky enough to be trained in the 4 rules since I was in elementary school.
While I have never had an ND, I'm far from perfect. Once mussel flagged a bunch of people at the base range b/c I derped during a drill and reholstered while prone. Got thrown off the range for that, and was more mad at myself than anyone else. Fortunately, my trigger finger was indexed, but it was still a wake-up.
If i was on the range with this guy he would probably get on my nerves, but he's right. Out of the 4 rules i'd say the most important is the muzzle direction. At least if you follow this one you would only shoot yourself--- which should be enough motivation to use common sense in the first place. I like that he used real examples and references for this vid. Just helps confirm that there are no 'professionals' when it comes to guns, we're all amateurs.
It's too bad we have liberal turds who believe anyone with a gun is going to go out on a rampage. Funny thing is none of those psychopaths have permits...
These rules apply not just to guns and toys, but also to power tools. Nail guns, power painters, and compressed air nozzles have the same issues. So anti-gun people who might use a power tool need to know these rules, too.
This is a very usefull video for all the people who were'nt taught this from a young age. Alot of people need to spend more time on the range with proper structure, as in having a range conducting officer to keep an eye on things, and of course you look out for each other. Its how we do it here in England, and shooting here is one of the safest sporting activities you can take part in here.
These are the reasons I have an issue with giving kids airsoft toys and other toy guns. It develops bad muscle memory over years. When they pick up a real firearm. They not only have to build new habits but they also have to break the old ones. Perhaps more parents should enforce these rules with their children's imitation firearms.
These jokers who wave their guns around and kill people are idiots... PERIOD! Now I personally feel I don't have much right to preach about this since I'm no shooter, not of guns anyway, but it's common sense.
I wish there would be a person like him that would go to an anime convention and teach gun safety. The people that attend actually frighten me in a safety mindset if one of the people actually had a real gun. Running around with blueguns with their fingers on the triggers and pointing them at random people, etc.
I agree with a lot of what this guy says. Actually all of it.
There is too many experts and too many people debating how long a piece of string is. If I was God, I would ban the word tactical. This guy seems to live in the real world and not the cyber space fantasy worlds where experts debate how to split hairs in a tactical fashion.
Please research Clint prior to voicing adverse judgement. I have been training with Clint and guys like him for over twenty years. I'm also a trainer I find his points valid and beyond question. Percentage wise the most unsafe personnel I have ever had in classes are military and police personnel. Ego, over confidence and pervasive incompetence are the hall marks of these folks. Not all but a vast majority.
@Model192 Clint was a cop himself for over a decade, including a SWAT officer. he was simply using examples of people, both cops and civilians, who have failed to follow the 4 basic rules and have suffered the consequences.
I'm 18, and have been shooting since about 5. Dad hammered safety rules into my head well longer ago than I can remember. So much so, that I still flinch when someone points a gun at a camera, and constantly point barrells away from people walk into a room, even with it disassembled.
Loved the vid, and still find it immensely irritating and funny in a morbid sense of humor when I hear stories about people shooting themselves.
Would somone tell me about thunder ranch and what it is? I found it by doing reaseach after seeing the thunder ranch "Rock Rifle". I am particularly interested in hearing about what the courses are like.If possible please tell me the some of the history of thier guns and weather you are satified with them. Lastly please tell me about the long range shooting course.I could'nt possibly justify the a need for the course but when i get older i would like to take the medium and long range shooting.TY
Clint..you're awesome. I just gave the exact speech to my 19 year old son about firearms safety. I drilled it in his head that he will practice it at all times and it is not a f-ing option. I mirrored your words about the plastic gun. It's a discipline...and a way of life and there is no compromise or exceptions. Now I quiz him through texts to really get it in his head...even when he's not on a range. It keeps him thinking about it..all the time. and I'll be sending this vid to him too.
Clint is da man! Just like in surgery, we do a lot of things to minimize errors that may seem pedantic—time outs, fire triangles, etc.—but it's because such errors create catastrophic complications like wrong-site surgery, laser fires, etc. Ya just can't over-emphasize the basics when serious disaster lurks so immediately and unexpectedly.
@MilesOhToole dear sir i just bought a arsmcoe 1911 9mm 9+1 round pistol its all i can afford now thats for a thing but now i realy feel bad because all of the people i know say as always why i buy 9mm while 45 is the best man stopping gun now i realy felt so bad about my gun making me think that i just waste the money i realy felt bad about this is realy 9mm a weak bullet? did i make a big mistake about buying the gun? thank u so much i will be waiting for ur reply..
@cobramoon1 Don't listen to people who say 9mm is a "bad" caliber. There really is no such thing as "stopping power" unless you're talking about artillery shells and nuclear missiles. The human body has an incredible ability to survive and there is actually no handgun caliber that will guarantee "stopping power". A 9mm round is just as effective in stopping a threat. Shot-placement is far more important than caliber. People have been killed by BB guns.
I agree however we all wish that under stress we could have shot placement. I personally am confident a 9mm +P HP can stop anyone. Reason everyone believes 9mm has no stopping power is b/c some guys in the military say so. What people dont realize is Military uses FMJ. HP tips really change the game. "Stopping Power" is measured by one shot stop power. Are you that confident you can stop a assailant with one bullet? Suit yourself I would rather have a high cap 9mm.
Oh also there are tons of rounds out there with guarantee one shot stopping power! But they are so over the top it would be absurd to consider one for a home defense caliber. .357 Mag, .44 Mag, .460 S&W, .500 S&W, .454 Casull, .50 AE etc. Impractical yes, but for those looking to drop a guy Dirty Harry style with one well placed bullet there you go. Good luck!
@cobramoon1 Don't let them get to you with Myth's. Here in Belize the caliber responsible for more deaths "justifiable homicides and gang shootings" is the so called "WEAK" 9mm.
It is not unusual for .45 lovers to throw a .38 snubby into their pockets on days when they feel lazy about carrying. Out of such a small barrel .38 special moves slower than 9mm BUT there are many cases where people have had no problem defending themselves with that gun and ammo combination.
Thank you for this video. No matter how many years I shoot, I hope I'm always humble enough to listen and learn...even relearn information that is so basic that it should be automatic.
thanks for this video. im sure im going to watch it a lot. gun safety (or lack there of) scares me to death. i absolutly cannot take any chances with my firearms or my family and i hope that i can be mindful of these rules 110% of the time.

CLINT is the man... get his lessons... you won't become a master gun ninja... but you'll become the master of your gun.

@MilesOhToole

@WhoChrisLiu
Good luck!

@WhoChrisLiu I cannot disagree, sir. Thanks for your good post.
