i have a stage 3 s4 and run 11.8 1/4 mile and i only dumped 10K into a car i got for 6K- show me the 540i that can do that! I run as fast as a zo6 or 911 turbo and my car has 120K miles- no bmw has ever matched me... go find a 700hp HPS m3 that has 30K in upgrades and you might find a match for a stage 3 S4, but put him against a gt28r S4 and forget about it as they are running 600 to 800hp.. BMW sux show me their LeMans or rally car race record versus AUDI- nuff said BMW cock worshiper!

@Rylee777 s4 (b5 chassis) come stock with twin turbo systems. This engine is the pinnacle of audi tuning. (Most get this in a manual tranny) and just search on youtube. Stage 3 S4 and they beat most supercars so their you go

if someone superchares an m5 there wount be as big difference than stock because the stock m5 is tuned up a lot and the 540 isnt really that tuned so there's big room for improvement in the 540

uhhhhhhhhhhhh absolutely wrong. There are supercharged M5's getting up to 1000hp. 540 engine is the base engine that the BMW engineers started with (M62) then they modified it, (S62) and it still has so much MORE potential than from the factory. Changing headers alone gets 30whp. Not much difference from stock!? Jesus Christ you couldn't be anymore wrong

Yeah and the headers would be changed if you had to turbo either engine. Also the M5 compression ratio is higher, not good for turboing and would require new pistons/rods. However the S62 engine is a much better starting point for many other reasons.

there a two versions of the e39. the early one is a 4.0 liter. the 98 and up version is a 4.4 liter.

Funny you mention that, late 90's 4 door M3 has been a dream car of mine forever. Truth be told I went the audi route because of the all wheel drive and the fact that it can easily be modified to be very fast. Turbo engines are just so much fun to play with and modify. Some may be ugly, but I have a 2001 A4, which can be (and has been) made very visually appealing.

A very nice car. BMW is stepping up their game with turbo engines. I am by no means in the market for a new turbo/awd bmw or audi, but my stepfather is and my vote is strongly for the 335xi sedan. He is quite pleased with the performance numbers as well as the awd system which is becoming more important (as mother is sick of him stealing her XC70 when it snows). I had originally been pushing for the M3 (he has long lusted after one) but am confident the 335xi is enough power and its AWD.

Traction? It's AWD. Even a stage 3 S4 (which has anywhere from 350-450whp) only barely breakes the front tires loose at the top of first under full boost. Traction is not an issue. Trust me, I know how fast S4's are at specific power levels.
