what else could Lee have done with his Union prisoners. He can't take them with him wherever he goes, because he will have extra mouths to feed, and he is not the kind of person to execute his POWs. He can't release them because they will likely rejoin the enemy. Putting them in prison camps was the best solution for any confederate or union general. Lee can't be held responsible by proxy for what happened in those prison camps, it was up to the men in charge to take care of them.

His family did own slaves and did sell them, but they were always the property of his mother or his wife, not him personally. With regards to the beating, the accustations are a he-said/he-said scenario of Lee's word against an ex-slave, but even the ex-slave denies that Lee personally did any beating.

He had to pay off the debts of the estate and raise funds to provide for the manumitted slaves as required by state law. The slaves did indeed dislike him because they thought Custiss' will provided for their immediate emancipation when it did not and therefore blamed Lee when he put the estate in order before emancipating them.

Lee's own account books -- in his own handwriting -- show he kept a Hunting List of ESCAPED slave girls, with obsessive details of the infants these girls ran away with (their own children). Lee paid six times the normal bounty to catch one of them. Why?

@TheBoberton If you think Lee spent 35 years in the military you are crazy, He took repeated extended leaves from the Army to "manage" the plantation -- which is a way of saying he went home to whip and terrorize the slaves, sell or kill some off, sell the babies, get some cash by selling the children, etc.

Lee was noted during the Mexican-American war by Winfield Scott for putting himself in harms way, going well beyond the call of duty to the benefit of Scott's campaign and fought at Contreras, Churubusco and Chapultepec where he was wounded leading the assault.

@dmkavidelly No dumb fuck, in fact, Lee never met Lincoln. Lee went to a reception -- in Union uniform, after Lincoln was president. But Lee never said he met Lincoln.
Nor did Lee ever say he was offered command of the Union Army. EVER. No one said that shit for 50 years, far as I know. Lee wasnt even a full colonel when Lincoln was in office. He had never commanded men in battle either.
Lee and Scott met to discuss what Lee would do, no offere was made to Lee at all.
