  • Checked these things out. Very efficient and capable of moving a lot of weight. Nice quality piece of work, just dont produce the speed you need to get up on the plane in a small boat. If they offered a faster prop like they do on the bigger versions they would be great. Until then a good petrol outboard and minn kota are going to give you the best of both worlds for the same money.

The ability to hook up a solar charger is pretty sweet though.

  • nevermind LOL

  • is there a mini moter for like inflatable boats cuz im a kid?????

  • @StormChaserChris BUT IM A COUNTRY KID!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would not trust that battery to a pin. I would rather keep the battery in the boat and have the motor plugged into the battery with wire

  • look how fast hes going ... : p slow down there bud your going to hurt someone

  • dont fuck around with this shit

  • You need a clip on skeg fin to make it steer and track. Like RC model boats use turn fins for.

  • I think electric is the wave of the future. It doesn't create a greasy mess like gas powered, easy to maintain, and the motor has full torque at any speed. Batteries are getting close to same energy level per weight to gas, and recharge with solar, it's free energy.

  • a 24/36 volt 80+ thrust trolling motor would be better and cheaper in my book.

  • And that's the most obvious reason because the fuel-engined things will ever be better (until fuel ends, of course...)

  • Id like a diesel common-rail outboard xD

  • seems to be a waste of money. To expensive and not very impressive.

  • 350 verado for me 5 of em beasts i made a calculation to eqate to 350 hp outboard youd need 1 million .1.185 of them outboards no offence but petrols better

  • @mariner10rpr yep!!!!!!!

  • I would go with Minn Kota or MotorGuide. This flimsy thing is 0VER twice the price and half the quality as far as durability goes. Minn Kota has a shaft that is virtualy indestructable and their power specs are REAL !

  • @pirogue29 yea I got a 40# 12V Minn-Kota $230CDN and a 103ahr battery $130CDN that moves a 4 seater paddle boat as good as that.

That's a lot beer in price difference.

  • @pirogue29 i love minn kota but torqeeto is faster

  • Gasoline engines kick ass

  • All this needs now is a solar panel kit, and it would be perfect.

  • per manufacturer Torqeedo is much like a 5HP Outboard, thats a lie, i have a Nissan 5HP outboard and Torqeedo power is way wayyy less. Torqeedo is just a trolling motor on steroids, not to mention its $2000+ price tag (depending on the option) , from my test fully charged battery gave me 3 1/2 hours of power and it becomes noisy when you hit 75% throttle , but if you like innovation and its 30lbs weight then this is for you.

  • The manufacturer claims that the Torqeedo 401 Travel (which this is) is equivalent to a 1hp engine, not a 5hp. The 801 is equivalent to a 2hp engine.

Maybe you were reading the specs for the much larger Torqeedo Cruise. If so, then it's hardly suprising that your Torqeedo didn't live up to that.

The model in this video costs £900, not £2000. The same model with a solid shaft, as opposed to the folding shaft, costs £689.

  • the battery probably last 5 recharges and you have to buy a new one which probably costs $200

  • Great review, thanks very much... I am using the Mercury 3.5hp FourStroke but it has no reverse gear and the exhaust is not through the prop (makes it quite loud) so i was going to go with the 6hp Merc but this electric motor makes so much more sense... it is just for a little 8 foot tender going from moorage to shore and back and a little bit of exploring in the shallows. I think I will buy mine from westmarine Canada ($i699) unless someone has a better idea. Thanks again for your time.

  • how much horsepower is one of those?

  • thats cool how much does it wiegh?

  • Under 30 pounds, including the battery.

  • what's something like that cost?

  • about $1600.

  • nice little electric, but a 5hp gas engine is better suited to the purpose...

  • that depends on your stated purpose, of course. For many dinghy uses, gas outboards are much more appropriate. For my needs for a week-end shore tender at Catalina Island, my Torqueedo 801 is absolutely sufficient.

  • why not use a trolling motor? runs with any 12V battery, which are not $600. This is what my dad uses on his little flat-bottom fishing boat.

  • Your typical trolling motor that will drive your boat as far as a Torqeedo will weigh more then to 80 pounds including battery. It depends on whether you care about the weight...

  • Because they are heavier. You can run this off a 12v lead acid battery though anyway if you prefer.

The fact that it folds up is still a bonus. I use an inflatable kayak which I carry in a rucksack on public transport.

  • It might be a little disheartening to drop that $600 battery overboard :-)

  • not only that, no battery no go, anywhere. i could not do all my boating in a little zodiac like that. too small. but this would make a good outboard to ge me back from mooring my cruiser. cute, it's tiny

  • I haven't dropped mine overboard...yet. :)

  • Too many little parts to drop overboard!

  • I don't think so, I haven't lost anything so far. The motor comes with two battery locking pins and 2 keys, in case they go missing. The only other loose part is the battery, you'll notice if it goes missing. :)
